177.0. "Baseball card autograph?" by USMFG::BCORSINI () Tue Sep 04 1990 13:43

  Should I have these cards autographed?

  Unique mint condition 1964 Yankee's - 5x7's

  These have a white border next to each players name for room to autograph
  each card. Will it deface or hurt value?

177.1If it's possible and then give it to me..WFOVX8::GUGLIELMO_TThu Sep 06 1990 14:155
    I personally would get it autographed if you can.I have seen such
    things go for a lot of money. Check note 15 on autographs it's a
    good reference.

177.2I'd keep them MINT!AKOV13::GASPARONIThu Sep 06 1990 15:1212
    Maris will be hard to get, unless you have connections above. I'd
    leave them blank. Spend you money on having a larger picture
    autographed, I don't think the auto will increase the card that much
    more. Only my opinion, but a card collector likes the cards
    uncluttered, without the autograph on it. It may even decrease the
    value of the actual card and not give you a real return on the
    autograph investment. Remember, a Mantle auto will cost you $35, plus
    admission to the show, usually $5, so thats $40 for that one card.
    Will the card go up $40 over the mint price, because the card is no
    longer Mint, you wrote on it. Cards are like stamps, cancell them and
    there not worth as much, unless there old. I'd put them in plastic and
    leave them MINT.

    These cards have a thick white border where the names appear. Ideal
    for autographing and not defacing the card. Just make sure he signs
    white border only.

    They are 5 x 7 black and white.

    None are for sale.
177.5I Agree.AKOV13::GASPARONIFri Sep 07 1990 16:598
    I agree. Why did I go out and by a P-S MM autog'd card. Because MM
    wasn't signing them for a while and the price was going up fast. No
    question about it, I'm proud of my MM autographed material, so it
    depends on the collector. But I still say, a 1952T Mint is worth more
    w/o the Autograph than with it, and I wouldn't waste the auto on a
    regular BB card. But if he has a nice place to sign the auto on the
    card, it may be a nice thing to get done. It should make for a nice
    collection and since its not for sale, why not, go for it!

    Don't know. It's becoming impossible even to define card.
    What have we wrought?

177.9A Moral to the mystery card story..USMFG::BCORSINIMon Sep 17 1990 13:1410
    Hi Folks:

    I'm the base noter and guess what? Went to a show this weekend.
    Saw some similar smaller cards, but they were very small. I spoke
    with a dealer and he did tell me they are extremely scarce especially
    in mint condition. He stated 5X7 picture packs are very tough to
    come by and it was interesting to hear that one full 64 Yankee Team
    survived all these years. He commented don't have them autographed.

    Did not get in full discussion on worth nor on who published. Did
    say that 5 x 7's in mint are extremely tough to ever come by.
    He said Mickey Mantle, Marris, Ford, make a great collection
    for a full picture pack and stated most like yours are never
    sold and just end up in a private collection.
