163.0. "BB Cards from 30's/40's - Advice Needed" by FDCV06::MARSH () Tue Aug 07 1990 14:53

I need some advice on how to determine the value of the
following baseball cards:

1940 "PLAY BALL" by Gum Inc., Philadelphia, PA (Black & White)

Dizzy Trout, Lon Warneke, Pep Young, Luke Sewell, Tom Sunkel
and Hank Greenburg.

1934, 1935 & 1936 "DIAMOND STARS" by National Chicle Co., Cambridge, MA
(Color Caricature)

Fritz Ostermueller, Al Lopez, Red Lucas, Buddy Myer, Wally Berger,
Jimmy Wilson, Van Mungo, Ray Hayworth, Dixie Walker, Frank Crosetti,
Mickey Cochrane and Dick Bartel.

Not dated - est. late 1930's
"PLAY BALL - America" by Gum Inc. (Black and White)

Doc Cramer, Jimmy Brown, Slick Coffman, Hank Greenburg, Lonnie Frey,
Paul Waner, Peaches Davis, Cecil Travis, Joe Bowman, Elden Auker,
Don Padgett, Eric McNair, Pete Appleton, Chuck Klein, Bob Johnson,
Paul Derringer, Dick Coffman, Buddy Hassett, Ralph Kress, Gil Brack,
Tommy Bridges, Luke Hamlin, Bob Seeds and Myril Hoag.

Not knowing how to "rate" or "grade" condition of cards, I'm
not sure of condition as far as collectors opinions go, however,
cards range from square corners, straight edges and no creases,
although slightly faded, to rounded corners, rough edges and some
type of glue on back corners.

Could someone recommend a Baseball Card book which would contain
the cards listed above as well as reputable dealers/collectors in
the North Central Mass area? Also, do periodic publications exist
in which dealers advertise for specific cards and where are such
publications available? Any advice/recommendations would be
greatly appreciated.

                    Steve

I Don't know about dealers but the Baseball Americana priceguide
by Denny Eckes that comes out every year should help.

One Question - Where are you located? If you like I'll grade and price
for you using Becketts annual catalogue. Be careful there are
variations of each card that varry wildly in price.
