I can only comment on Topps seeing they are the only cards I collect,
although I bought 2 packs of Donruss for the heck of it and kinda
like the looks of them (I got a Giamotti, can be had). As for Topps,
I have to admit I was dissapointed. I don't know what they were
thinking making them so colorful. I like the old days when the
cards were plain and simple. The stock they use seems extremely
thin, allowing them to bend easily, or peal appart when you browse
through them. And lastly, WHEN will they put that stupid insert
card on the bottom, I bought a box and every card on the bottom
of the pack was stained, including the only Griffey Jr. I got.
I have bought far less than I usually do as a result. I may just buy
the set from the factory and to hell with the wax packs.

One thing I like about Topps over the others, Topps has the players
entire career stats on the back, not just "Recent Performance". I like
looking over what a player has done who has been around a while.
    Ya know?

Anyone see the new Topps Magazine yet, with the 6 player cards inside
the magazine?? Think there is any investment potential in these
    cards??

I talked to one of the Managers at B.J.'s,and he told me that he
has a big back order for Fleer,Donruss, and Topps boxes (36 count)
that should be in this month (MARCH).The price will be $12.98 per.
I will be checking this out everyday and will up date this note
for those of you who are concerned. By the way, they have a limit
of 10 per customer. this is a great deal for the little kids to
go up there with their allowance,I happened to hear acouple of boys
age 11 to 13 say that this was a great deal, and instead of paying any
ways from $.50 to $.60 per pack, there paying $.35 and there not being
    ripped off.

Eat your heart out DEALERS !

The JC Penney Outlet store in Billerica, MA currently has the 1988
Topps Traded sets for $9.99 (limit of 6 per customer). Since I'm
just getting into this with my son, is this a good deal?

Baseball Card News had a similar article. They blamed Score for
"rationing" the earlier shipments, and then "dumping" the remaining
stock at the end of the year.

Had I spent the $55.00, I'd be upset. By rationing the stuff, they gave
the dealers an excuse to raise prices, touting the "scarcity" of the
product. By dumping it, they gave us a hard lesson in economics, i.e.
don't buy into hysteria and hype. All the companies print these cards
in the billions, and the term scarce doen't come close to applying.
1961 high numbers, maybe, but current sets, never. Like the 1989 U.D.
set, I wanted this one. But buying it wasn't in the equation, until I
saw it for $16.00. The same thing happened to the first U.D. set,
starting out high and then dropping a bit.

John St. Onge's observation is valid, why buy in the pre-season when
speculation runs high, when you're likely to get a better deal in the
off-season when the truth is a little more readily available?

One thing about good hindsight is that everyone has it. I am trying
to work on better foresight, But I still seem to be blind. I need the
latest stuff to keep up, but I tend to agree with John.. Rare is what
will live through a tight economy sell off. I will continue to buy
new, but other than buying stars, I will wait til years end to buy
sets. I will only buy wax when I need the thrill. Why should I buy
Score wax next year? They will only come out with a set at years end
that will have cards I can't get elsewhere in them. Might as well
wait. While I am at it I might as well wait for the prices to drop
on them as well........How's that for a New Years resolution?

WHAT!! broke your resolution already! It's only Dec 31st.

    re:- .7

I think that that was the same issue that I picked up yesterday. And
that opinion was just the opinion of that one writer not SCD.

If you go into to card collecting to make money...hey its like buying
stocks from a broker, you takes your chances. If the prices go up when
you bought low, then everything is fine. If you buy high and the prices
    go low everyone bitches.

I think a lot of the blame should go with the investors. I've given up
blaming the dealers. If I think a price is too high I don't buy, I'll
go somewhere else, and I may not buy there either. I've made up my
mind-"I COLLECT BECAUSE I ENJOY IT". When I give my cards to my kid, he
    can worry about prices.

    re: .12, et al

Every issue of Beckett's has a price survey. In the latest issue it's
near the back of the book. Beckett claims that all prices are
collated, the high and low thrown out and then averaged. They try to
appeal to the subscriber as well as the dealer. They offer free 6
    month subscriptions.

I guess the dealers who respond, tell them what price they sell their
stuff for. Probably Beckett's high. The collector should use this
survey to tell Beckett what price they would buy a card for. Probably
Beckett's low. When averaged out we should have different prices.
It's our fault (meaning collectors) if we let dealers control the
    prices.

John, We all invest, you included, I have to if I ever hope to get
some of the older cards I want. I would need a bunch of my cards to
go up, so that I could swing a deal on that Ryan rookie card that
would complete my collection. I don't stand a ghost of a chance of
it otherwise. My allowance is to small. Buy cheap now and lots
of it, hope it goes up then trade large amount to get one card you
would love to own or do the alternative, save forever and don't get
to enjoy the hobby while waiting.
94.18WRKSYS::SCHWARTZThu Nov 15 1990 13:1311

Good points. One of the reasons I come here for advice.
I guess my thinking was, If you bought 10 cards at, lets say as
much as $1.00 and the guy was hot and became a Henderson, The card
would have demand and go to $100 within a couple of years. That is
quite a percentage. The cards could then be used to buy older stuff.
If the Ryan went up at the same rate, then only the very rich could
ever afford to buy one. In other words if both appreciated $100, I
could almost afford the Ryan if I sold off the 10 cards. Total
investment= $10 verses going out today and buying a Ryan, say at
$1000. See my thinking? Am I way off base?
94.20Looking for bargain on Ryan rookie:>)WRKSYS::SCHWARTZMon Nov 19 1990 11:2330

Two sides to the coin I guess. I love speculation though aand can't
resist the thrill gambling does to me. Take the lottery for example,
I wouldn't buy a ticket if I really thought about the odds of winning.
It's the thrill that there is still that chance. Two examples of
Speculation. I bought wax in 89 and accumulated about 10 Ken Griffey
Jr. rookies and this year after a conversation with another guy
speculating...I went shoping for Frank Thomas, Dave Justice And Cecil
Fielder rookies. I bought most of the Fleer and Donruss Fielder rookies
That I have for less than a buck and I think he's good for a couple of
more years. I won't tell you how many Thomas's and Justice cards I
have, but let's just say, I wish them very well. If they turn belly
up on me then I don't lose more than $20 or $30 on each.
I agree with you that I wouldn't go out and spend $$$ for a bunch
of Cansuco's cards and try to speculate on them. :>)

The things I enjoy most in this hobby are.

         1. speculating and finding yourself correct

         2. Building a nice collection.

         3. Finding that bargain (forgetting how much you spent foolishly
before) This weekend Skybox .$50 a pack. Hoops 89 Robinson
            $13 Mt. (at podium)

         4. opening wax and finding that super star for the price of wax.

94.22Both!! I'm not lookin' for commonsWRKSYS::SCHWARTZMon Nov 19 1990 16:4114

I guess that I would have to be honest in this case and say both.
Don't you ever gamble once in a while and buy an older wax pack,
not for the favorite player, but for the fact that their might be
a valuable card in it? It's another form of gambleing. The odds are
high against you and you expect to lose, but when you do get the
$$$ card, the thrill is unbelievable.
I can't live in the past and cards are marked by $$$$ today. It won't
change. I am not dealing and am not looking to make a killing. I just
want to own all the cards in the world. :>):>):>) I guess that I would
raise my eyebrow to that guy who tells me that he is only looking for
that favorite 'cause I know he's lying in most cases. If he's only
looking for his favorites, he should give me the stars. Do you do
this? If so when are we going to our next show together???:>):>)
94.24Rumor control reporting!WRKSYS::SCHWARTZTue Nov 20 1990 15:0717

John, that paragraph was only meant to tease you. I know what you
collect. REmember I have seen you at a couple of shows. Did you get my
mail? Want that hologram? Get out that old metal detector and head over
to B.J.'s in Westboro Mass. Last time I was there they had tons of
    boxes to go through.:>)
BTW I don't have any facts to back this up with, but I heard that
Topps is going to put a special Hologram on their redemption
Certificates so that they can't be forged. Is this true?? If so then
people will be lining up with their metal detectors again.
     Other things overheard this week.
