69.0. "Sports & Stamps" by SA1794::CUZZONES (Mine came with a tatoo!) Tue May 30 1989 17:37

Kind of a crossover collectable ....

The Post Office is issuing a Lou Gehrig stamp June 12. A companion
item is the "Legends of Baseball" scrapbook and stamp album featuring
the Gehrig stamp as well as previously issued Jackie Robinson, Babe
Ruth and Roberto Clemente stamps. The album is priced at $7.95.

The stamp is priced at $.25

Of course, Mike Kelly has already ordered thousands and will have
them available June 11 for $.20/ea in quantities over 10. ;-)

    Tony,

The postmark was hand done at a Post Office booth by a U.S.P.S.
employee. It is an "official" government cancellation commemorating
the event. I liked it, so I bought it. Maybe some dealers get thier
own rubber stamps, but I witnessed the cancellation, and like I
    said, was satisfied.

    Hope that helps,

    John D.

The postmark to have would be of the original game 3!

    RE: .5

    I got two of them.

    RE: .6 (I think)

They had two with autographs, Kevin Mitchell and Will Clark. I,
like most of you, like to get my autographs in person, so I didn't
buy any. Besides, they were pretty pricey!

69.6This is how it works...BOGUSS::DAMIANOHigh and deep....It's gone!!Tue Oct 31 1989 19:1731
Tony, here's how it worked at the game:

The vendor has the cachet (I hate the name, too) envelopes in stock.
It is an envelope with the world series logo on the left side and
the postage stamp in the upper right hand corner. You buy the envelope
from the vendor's booth, and then walk to the U.S.P.S. booth. The
POST OFFICE provides the cancellation for you, done by a "genuine"
postal clerk, uniform and everything. As long as there is a stamp
on it, the Post Office will cancell it, in this case with a special
cancellation made for the World Series. If you brought your own
stamped envelopes, you could get a commemorative cancellation on
them, too (we did). People put stamps on ticket stubs, W.S. programs,
etc., and the Post Office cancelled them all with the special
cancellation. I bought the envelopes with the W.S. design because
it was more attractive than a plain envelope.

To sum up, you buy the UNCANCELLED cachet envelope, and then go
to the Post Office booth a few yards away to obtain the commemorative
cancellation. This is a U.S.P.S. cancellation that shows what Postal
Station did the cancellation, the date, the event, and the game
number. Also, if you brought your own stuff, the Post Office didn't
charge for the cancellation, they can't by law.

If you're still confused, shoot me mail and we'll talk. Perhaps
I'm not painting a clear enough picture here.

If you still think it's crap, no problem. We can't agree on
    everything.8^)

    Roy,

The other guests could take bets on how long you'd be in the bathroom.
Doesn't the Rose plate come with a bookies business card?

69.9Who knows?BOGUSS::DAMIANOHigh and deep....It's gone!!Wed Nov 01 1989 15:4527
    RE:.12 Tony

As far as other events go, who knows. I haven't seen any other items
like the one's you describe, only First Day Covers and the World
Series issue I saw. I suppose you'd have to have the envelopes made
up and ready, and then run down to the Post Office that day and
get 'em all stamped before they close....being able to tell the
future would definitely be a plus! I would think it's plausable
to assume that for something like Hank Aarons record breaking homerun
some enterprizing fellow would have the envelopes pre-made, as it would be
a question of when, not if.

When I entered the base note, I had no idea I'd start such a big
    deal!8*)

Perhaps next time I come out that way for training, I'll bring 'em
along and show them to you. But I refuse to eat spaghetti off of
    Pete Rose's face!!

They had all this stuff available in Coopertown at the induction
ceremonies this summer.

The PO would cancel anything with a stamp, programs, leaflets,
you name it. The HOF were giving away programs at the gate and selling
scorecards for .50 a piece.

A couple of hours later, when they were out of everything, the
"cancelled" scorecards were going for $5 and the programs for $7.

And people were buying them. Unreal.

I got a few for myself. Hell, for the price of a stamp, it's a
cheap souvenior.

    re .14

Rose obviously belongs on a cachet or sachet or whatever the hell
it is, while Strawberry, Rice, and Trout belong on plates. Some
kid at a card show once was all excited about the Larry Bird plate
he'd just bought for big bucks. Imaging eating your bacon and eggs
off that mug! Or a plate of rigatoni off Steve Balboni! Or fondue
off Hendu! Roast quail off Kevin McHale (talk about death warmed
over)? Vermicelli off Petrocelli? Sorry Tony, but there seem to
be more food names that rhyme with the names of Italian players.
Don't think I'd want to eat squab off a likeness of Cobb either.
Never mind. Just forget this reply. Let's get on to discussing those
ceramic cards, which are so much fun to flip!
69.12Hey, cancel this!SAGE::JACUNSKIWed Nov 15 1989 18:026
Speaking of breakable collectibles, did any of you see the Babe
Ruth bust advertised recently in SCD? The Babe's head blends into
a likeness of a baseball, and bears an "authentic" signature. This
"limited edition" beauty can be yours for only $250. And remember,
you can get this bust, or any brittle collectible cancelled by an
authentic civil servant for the price of a stamp!

    Hey Tony,

Guess what? I just got another cachet. It's really bitchin', man. It

were here so you could check it out, dude. Want one? 8^)

Uh oh. You're going to hear about that last reply, Tony. You managed to
offend people of a certain collecting preference, a certain sexual
preference, a certain geographical preference, and a certain
gastronomical preference. All in one note! Let's try to be a little
more understanding. After all, one man's "Cachet" is another man's
    delicate lace hankie.

    Tony,

Gee, let me know which ones you're missing, maybe I can make you a
deal on some stuff I recently acquired.....
