53.0. "Ladies Welcome" by UJEST::JACUNSKI () Fri Oct 28 1988 15:04

    From time to time in SCD and other mags, I've seen letters from or
    about women who collect cards ("women collectors" doesn't seem to
    be the appropriate phrase, somehow), and I know that Renata Galasso
    is one of the biggest dealers/promoters. But it still seems to be
    a male-dominated hobby. I'm curious as to how many women, if any,
    have tuned in to this conference. Anyone?

    By the way, as far as I know, I'm still president of the Ruben Amaro
    Fan Club.

	For a short period of time I corresponded with a girl from Encino, CA.
I was helping her locate some 1951 Topps Ringside boxing cards. She was working
on the set. I could only imagine her and her "valley girl" friends comments as
they viewed her boxing card collection ....

"... like these radical boxing cards are like totally awesome ... like this ones
got a bitchin bod ... oh look at this one ... like barf me out totally !!!"

	In eight years, thats the only female collector I ever dealt with.

    -I guess our mothers collecting cards for their own seemingly innocent
    reasons wouldn't count, would it? A friend of mine's mother took,
    I mean collected, all of his cards, and for punishment, slid every
    one of them before his eyes into the crack between their wall and
    their fireplace. I still want to break down and blat whenever I
    think of it.

          Whoa! Where does that lady live? The cards are probably still
    in the crack and in better condition than lots of mine. Let's bop
    on over there this weekend with masonry drills and sledge hammers.

    This guy's parents live in Conn., and I've already told him that
    if his parents ever sell their house, that I want first crack at
    it. Imagine pulling a '69 Jackson out of a wall in the year 2001.
    It would surely brighten my day! PM.

    I'm not a collector myself, but my boy friend is an avid collector.
    So, I look at this notesfile once in awhile and tell him of anything
    that he might be interested in. He is interested in all Tiger Baseball
    collectables. I'm finding that this is a really interesting hobby.
    I've come a long way since the first time I went to a baseball card
    convention and thought that it was crazy to pay over $1,000+ for a
    Wagner card(that wasn't even in a mint condition). Of course my
    comment at the time was "how can anyone pay that much for a piece
    of paper". Who knows, maybe someday, I'll be the one sho starts looking
    for baseball card shops at every town that I visit....
53.6Come Forward LadiesIMPULS::MCDONOUGHSat Mar 10 1990 23:2612

    Come on ladies there have got to be more of us out there. I shudder
    to think that only the guys can collect cards. I understand that
    no one has actually said it but that is the impression that I have
    gotten from the shops around my town. It is fun when I know more
    about a particular card and a guy does not believe me, but when
    they check it out they are impressed.
    I know that not every place is like this but the men have got to
    realize that this is not a boys hobby anymore!

53.7About Time!NUTMEG::JACUNSKIMon Mar 12 1990 19:127
    Hey Bonnie, Welcome. You can see how long ago I started this topic and
    how little response there's been. Maybe more women will collect when
    more women are featured in sports cards. I do see more and more woman
    dealers at these shows, though, and a lot of them seem to be
    independent rather than just helping out hubby.

    I love to collect! Trying to complete a George Brett card collection
    with a good friend, that was started over a year ago. Only have about
    7 cards to go. I hope to get George to sign a few and a baseball I have
    (with his picture) this year when the Royals play the A's. Also collect KC
    pins! One day I would love to see a game played at Royals Stadium in
    KC.
