I'm wondering too about the wide variation in listed prices.
Right now, I'm trying to sell/trade some '84 33-card
TOPPS Cereal Sets. 1 and 1/2 years ago, you could buy one
for $10.00. This year, I've seen them for $14 to $17. If
I sold to a dealer, he'd give me 1/2 the book value so he
could re-sell at a profit. So, what I'm suggesting is
this: Since most of us live around 495, maybe we could
trade with each other (anybody else need to complete the
TOPPS Bigs-series 3?) by:

1. Find the high and low price for a given card(s) in the
   various price "guides".

2. Determine the average price, based on this info.

3. Agree to sell/trade with each other at 75% of this
   average price.

By doing this, we'll never have to settle for 50% of
book value from a dealer, and we'll hopefully start
taking a lot of business away from them - in which
case they'll have to start lowering their prices.
Furthermore, we'll get what we want at 75% of the price,
not 100% of the price from a dealer. If we are a big
enough group, maybe we could force the *local* market
(the card dealers) to compete against each other more
aggressively, to OUR benefit. This competition might
force some small-time dealers out of the business;
they'd have to liquidate their stock. The *local*
market would then become flooded with all those Canseco
rookies they bought at #3.00 each (in lots of 100), etc.
and for which they wanted to charge umpteen bucks.

By trading with each other (if we're a big enough cartel)
we'd put a lot of downward pressure on prices, to the
benefit of average collectors like ourselves.

-< Price Guides. Fact or Fiction? >-

Does anybody out there know how the hell these price guides, magazines, etc.,
get their information for "monthly" card prices ? I assume that they recieve
surveys from a few of the "top dealers" in the big cities of this country. But
I still don't understand how they do it ? Do the dealers submit a list of cards
they have sold in the last month, for example: "Dear Mr. Rag, I sold a Mickey
Mantle rookie last month for $700,000. Sincerely, Mr Gem-Mint". Is any of this
information verified by the people compiling the price guide ? Do they demand a
name, address, etc. of the sucker who paid the outrageous price ? I bet they
don't. Even if they do, the dealers could easily get some dope to lie for them.
I personally don't think the guides take the time to verify. Oh my God !!! Its
enough to make an honest dealer dishonest fast. Think about it, a dealer could
stock pile enough of a certain card (say, a 1984 Donruss Mattingly rookie), then
start submitting a bogus sale price in their survey. Then, when the price in
the guide gets nice and high, they flood the market and make a killin !!! Hey
guys, I hope I'm wrong (for once 8^).

28.5But there's only one that counts... LEDS::OBRIENRMon Apr 09 1990 17:1912

Becketts. I don't care what price guide a dealer uses; I use
Becketts, and if his prices aren't in line with the current issue,
I move on. Becketts is the only price guide which does a
reasonable job of tracking current prices, and it is the only
publication dedicated solely to providing pricing information
(the 'rag' (CCP) doesn't count), IMO.

They are just trying to get in on the error craze. I'm waiting
for them to list MM 52 Topps at a buck so I can hit the shows.
Just think! You now have an Error Becketts.

Last year's SCD Price Guide rookie list had no entry for Brian Harper.
Anyone know which year his rookie came out? Somewhere around 82, I'd
    guess.

     Hello,

Have you seen that the Beckett's have been collector items themselves
the Bo Jackson cover with him in shoulder pads was selling for $30.00
at the swap meet this last weekend. I was amazed at the price, any
earlier issues are worth some bucks also. Keep them in Mint condition
if anything. Has anyone else seen the Becketts for sell like this???

    John,

Beckett publishes a price guide to Baseball Collectables. I think you
would find that 'stuff' in there. It's about the size of the big card
    guide they publish annually.

Well, make room for one more price guide, "TUFF STUFF Jr" for
kids. I brought my kid a copy it looks pretty nice, it has a set of
cards inside from different sports, has a poster of Ken Griffy Jr,
has a price guide that includes starting lineup dolls, etc.

I've seen the title Malloy's Hockey Collectors Price Guide a few times
over the past several weeks but I've yet to see the guide itself.
Anyone else see or hear of it?
Is it for cards and/or other memoribilia?
How does it rank next to Beckett's (prices, features, ect.)

what's the best source of prices for the "out-of-the-mainstream" cards
    such as:
.Ted Williams series printed in the early 60s
    	.HOF series, same timeframe
    	.Post cereal cutout cards
    	.etc...

    Becketts avoids these.

The annual big Beckett's will list some of them and SCD puts out a pretty
comprehensive catalog of cards. Some of the book stores will sell these.
