And then, walking about the library at random, enjoying the vision of all the books, I pulled one from a nearby shelf, and let it fall open. There were poems in this book, although it was not a book of poetry, but a novel. The poem opened to me was: " THIRD SONG: VAIN LONGING One is an immortal flower of fairyland, The other fair flawless jade, And were it not predestined Why should they meet again in this existence? Yet, if predestined, Why does their love come to nothing? One sighs to no purpose, The other yearns in vain; One is the moon reflected in the water, The other but a flower in the mirror. How many tears can well from her eyes? Can they flow on from autumn till winter, From spring till summer? "

I noticed a chair with a small table beside it. On the table was a pencil and paper. Feeling mischievous, I composed the following poem in reply to the one I'd just read. I folded the paper and placed it in the book, closed it, and replaced it on the shelf. One is the fleeting fragrance of rose, The other bears the strength of granite, Patterns swirl, giving life to chaos Should not earth again connect root to root? And if love would reign, Why couldn't life bloom in minute ecstasies? One breathes life into soul, The other bears the pain; One breaks sunlight into rainbow, The other transforms shadow into cocoon. How many laughs may bubble from her lips? Will they sing from stream to desert, From valley floor to mountain high? |
