706.2We want SC connectors and Auto Level ctrl on SMFSTKHLM::WEBJORNTue May 13 1997 14:0424

We just installed a GigaSwitch/FDDI in the Swedish GIX. It is
configured with 20 SMF ports and 4 MMF ports. STOKAB, the fibre co:
has standardised on SC connectors for their entire cable plant.
SC seems to be the most prevalent connector with modern equipment.

They would be most happy with SC connectors on everything.

They also question the fixed dynamic range of the SMF adapter. Other
gear they use can adjust XMIT level automaticly. They do not want to
add specific attenuators for almost all ports. A typical suscriber
fibre loop is 3-6.5 km, and has 2-4 dB loss. Only longdistance runs
can operate 'attenuatorless'. They would also like to be able to
weld fiber for temp connections in case of big cable breaks.

The use of attenuators increases the workload abnormally during
hectic repair situations. Lacking automatic XMIT level adjustment,
manual on front adjustment *could* be acceptable.

p.s. this is the second giga at the gix.

706.3SINGLE mode fiber that is !!STKHLM::WEBJORNWed May 14 1997 11:2323

Just to clarify, due to the mail responses I got, that I cannot answer
due to the non-exchangeabilty between mail systems:

I was refering to Single Mode fiber, with SC connectors. With multimode
SC is nice, but not that critical I think.

According to the 'fiber carrier' ST is not a good choice for SMF.

The interconnections in a SMF plant / MAN today are built around
'cheapo' plastic panel inserts with a presicion bronze sleeve
that aligns the ferrules of the connectors. These are made to mate
with SC connectors. The alignement presicion is so good, that it's
hard to see the patches with a OTDR, provided the ferrule ends are
polished at 89.9 degrees, to eliminate reflections.

It looks like toys, but works solidly, and it's low cost.

All patch cables are simplex SC-SC.
