Yes, it's like Faxanadu - starts you back at the last "healing place"
that you've visited with all the items that you've found thus far.
However, if you die inside a cave or a castle, any item found in that
cave on that trip goes back to its original place - you have to go and
    get it again.

This game is great. You have a huge variety of swords, shields, items
and magic. The graphics are tremendous. You have spells that can send
lighting through the sky or turn yourself into a monster. There are so
many things to explore. I have nine swords 10 shields and you have to
find which one works best against the monsters. I have almost solved
it. I already killed kiel (sp) and tried to fight Bavorada (sp) but she
    is difficult.

My son is a new Willow fan and he has a question: How can Willow get
into cottages that don't have paths leading into them? Is it even
possible to get into these cottages?

408.5Hints on WILLOWWEFXEM::NICHOLSThu Feb 15 1990 22:0411
My son loves WILLOW but would like to get some hints on some things.

    1) He lost the CREST to General Kiel and can't get it back ... How can
       he get it back ?

    2) How do you get the key to Kiel's Castle ?

    3) How do you kill General Kiel ?

    Thanks in advance ...

408.6Hints from my expert staffDUGGAN::WILLINGERMon Feb 19 1990 11:4616
    re: .4

Huts that have no path access are not used (just visual).

    re: .5

    1) Losing the CREST must mean that Willow is dead. CONTINUE (or the
password you receive) should put you outside Bavmorda's castle with the
crest back in your possession. You have to defeat Kiel to get to
    Bavmorda.

    2) I thought you just met Kiel? The location of any keys (and most
anything else) required in this game can be discovered by talking with
    the characters that you meet.

    3) Practice and Persistence.

I'm surprised there's been so little activity in this note!
I think this is a fantastic game! Very similar to Zelda but
not as difficult (which I appreciate).

If there's anyone out there that's finished this game, I could
use some general tips. I've reached the cursed bridge before
the evil queen's castle and can't cross it. Obviously I don't
have the item I need. What I'd like to know is if anyone has a
list of the shields, swords, items and magic that one should have
upon reaching this point. Also, any ideas of how many things I
should be looking for in the mountains in this area would be
appreciated. I've found about 3 so far (I believe). Is it
necessary to have all the "slots" full for each (magic, items etc.)?

    Any information would be appreciated.

    Thx

I have the LONG SWORD,BATTLE SWORD, FLAME SWORD AND THE DEVILS EYE
    SWORD, DRAGON SCALE SWORD.

I have the Fire Majic the Majical Stick an the Healing Mace.

    These are my Questions.

Where do the Brownies go after you get the Bracelet?

Wher does madmartigan go when you free him.

And what do you do at lake Cheef. I search through the crossroads at
seem to go in circles. I get to a place where you go under water but
the first 10 steps and I die. Do you need an item to pass this. I have
180 hit points and 160 magic.

I haven't seen the brownies again. I believe they were there as a
sort of trick...to make you think you needed the sphere, which the
    dragon won't give you.

Madgarten (or whatever) gives you some important information once you
free him and run into him again at the tavern. He'll answer your
question about getting thru the water.

408.11finishing willowDUGGAN::WILLINGERWed Feb 21 1990 21:3924
How long it takes to finish depends alot on your style of play,
but we finished it by playing "family style" (everybody pitching in)
over a week or two. You can finish faster if you're adept at mapping -
that way you don't waste alot of time going back over the same places,
or missing a corridor that contains something you need later on. Just
explore every room, cave, corridor, house, etc. and you'll finish it.
It's a good idea to periodically stop and pick up a new password so
that you can easily return to a point in the game where you may have
    missed something.

In general, the characters you meet have some value - either an item or
a clue or magic. Once past them, a few show up later, but many don't.
I found that to be part of the game's charm - you never know who you're
going to run into again. Each and every item seems to be necessary to get
past at least one obstacle, but you can skip a sword, shield or magic
spell and still finish the game. If you reach an impasse, you probably
need to go back and find a clue or an object that will help you.
(surviving the lake crossing, or crossing the bridge are good examples)

By the way, the ending is one of the best I've seen. It's done like
movie credits, where all the previous scenes from the game are recapped
behind the credits which flash in front. Some of the names they use
are hilarious. We keep going back to defeat Bavmorda just so we can
    watch the ending again.
408.12Boss SwineMORO::MAPPS_RIRich Mapps - Irvine A.C.T.Mon Feb 26 1990 15:1211
I am stuck in trying to defeat a 'boss' - it is in the cave system
after fin raziel, and looks like a pig with spines. I am currently at
level 14, and can damage him about 75% with the battle sword (the more
powerful swords I have don't seem to do as well). For those of you who
have beaten this guy, what level were you - I don't relish building up
23000+ points to get to level 15, unless it's really necessary. On the
other hand, I'm going noplace this way and my frustration is rising
faster than my points go down trying to kill this thing! (Five minutes
to get to it, and 20 seconds to die ........). Any spoilers or comments
    will by most appreciated

    Rich....

    I'm currently at level 13 (I think, around 39K) and I believe I
have already taken care of the "boss" you're talking about. I'm
in the evil castle with one obstacle before I take out the queen!!

    Anyway......

I don't exactly recall the "pig with spines", but does it shoot
things at you? What I found on thoses "bosses" that shoot is
that you hold your attack while they shoot, letting your shield
deflect the "bullets". Then you have to hit 'em between shots.

Also, do you have the regular controllers or something like the
Advantage? It will take quite a bit longer with the regular
controller....I have the advantage and use "auto" for my sword
    which is a LOT easier.

Thanks for the quick reply - I tried it last nite and it worked! I
think that one was not as tough as I made it on myself. Also I noticed
that by playing with the turbo rate on my advantage, I was able to get
a faster 'fire rate' than I had been getting - I always just cranked it
to full on, but there is a point (on mine) at just below .5 actually
gives you a faster action - I suppose that the higher rate generates
too much interrupt service, and slows the game down.) Now if I could
just get through that next maze ..........

I have found my way to a long bridge which I can't get on. First
question is a bit before this. There is a place by a stream where there
are lots of little 'man hole covers'. Whenever I cross them, they start
to vibrate and just beat the H*LL out of me. I perservered, and got
across, but it cost a lot of magic points to renew my life. Is there a
magic item that (I am missing) would help here? Secondly, just before
the bridge in question is a cave. A man in the casve says that the
bridge is cursed and no one can get to ____ ____ (forget the name of
the kingdom - two short words). He is right, as far as I can see - I
can't get on the bridge. If I take the parellel path which runs just
south of it, I get to a dead end with another cave that just seems to
take me back where I was. I must need some magic or item that I don't
have - or a fresh idea - any help in sight would be appreciated!!

Is the cave with the old man the red-colored one? Anyway....in the red
cave system in that area you'll find something that will enable you to
cross the bridge. I had to go back and look for it myself as I figured

Drawing from memory, the location of the key is behind this form feed:

When you stand in front of Tir Asleen, to your RIGHT (and then down)

Remember the sword fights in all those great old movies with Fairbanks

Take him on head on. March straight up the screen and attack once.
Retreat(don't go to either side, go back straight), wait and dodge his

think it matters what kind of sword you use, just as long it one of the
more powerful ones, you picked up late in the game.

I finally killed the General and went on to find Bavmorda (or the
witch), whatever. I was unsuccessful the first time in killing the
    witch with the cane.

When I came back to life, I was outside of Nockmaar (sp?). In trying
to get back to the last castle, I ran into the General AGAIN!! What
gives? Do I have to KILL him each time I go through? All the other

I believe you have to kill that sucker and go back to revitalize,
which should also register the fact that you killed him. Then go
after Bavmorda. I made the same mistake and had to kill him twice
    as well.

Actually, the same rule applies throughout the game. If you die inside
a castle, or a cave, most everything is returned to its original place
as it was when you entered. If you want to keep a treasure, or keep a
dead bad guy from reappearing, simply step outside into the fresh air
and sunshine, then go back in and battle the next foe.

Thanx to the last 2 responses. The General is finally dead forever.

Next problem: I found the witch and used my cane magic. I hit her
with EVERY shot (didn't miss once as I had her pinned in a corner).
Needless to say, she was ALMOST dead and I ran out of magic. The sword
didn't do a thing. I am the highest level (16) that you can be. What
    am I doing wrong????

Could some of you more advanced players give me a hand? I've
made it as far as Fin Raziel's cave and I changed her back to
her original form. My problem is this; I go north on that path
and I come to a cave that contains the "Fleet" spell. I find that
after I've found the "Fleet" spell, I have to use it in order to
get out of the cave. If I go north after leaving the cave, I run

Just to make it official that my family and I smashed Bavmorda and with
lots of pride watched the final scenes. We felt good that despite our
cry for help (which nobody responded to) we did it ourselves. I have
put behind a form feed, several hints that might be useful to those
that follow that were not located elsewhere in this topic.

    - the spiney creature in the back of the cave just past the first river
and Fin Razel can be had by standing perfectly still and stiking as the
creature comes to yuo. Your shield will do the blocking work for you if
    you don't move.

    - The witches boots can be had from the cave dweller as mentioned in
this topic previously. What it didn't tell you was that you had to
bother this person by gointg in there repeatedly before you got the
    boots.

    - A similar thing happened with the key to Nockmoor. After getting the
instructions, I visited the old lady's house and the door would not
open. I went back to Nockmoor and tried it again and it worked. Why?? I
    don't know.

    - Gneral Keil is a real tough one to beat. It took me about 20 tries to
kill him off. YOU MUST EXIT (OR USE FLEET) AFTER KILLING HIM AND BEFORE
GOING ON TO FIND BAVMORDA, AND VISIT A HEALING STATION. THIS WILL LOCK
IN YOUR KILL. Otherwise, you might have to kill him again.

    - Bavmorda is easier by comparision. You must not use up ANY MAGIC ON
THE WAY UP TO HER!!! YOU WILL NEED IT ALL. Once inside her place,
position yourself in the top right corner and face down. When she
starts up your way, slowly loose a shot from the magic cane at her. Do
not fire too quickly. By doing it slowly, she will stay in her place
and just kick back a little after each hit. You must score a hit wit
every shot until your entire magic is gone. The second phase with the
sword is VERY easy and she will die just like the dragons you have had
to kill on your way around.

go back and visit Nockmar again and talk to the people there. After
that revisit, go to Tir Asleen, and "knock" on the house door that is
just below and to the left of the castle. The door should open for you
this time and the old woman should give you the key.

I also had to do this more than once to get the door to open. If it
still fails to open try it again. The one to visit in Nockmoor is the
person that tells you about the key. What I did was as soon as I got

    Fay,

I'm not sure what you mean by "does the password change with
each game". I know that the passwords are determined (i.e.
    calculated/encoded) by:

    		1) your posessions at last rest point

    		2) your level (not exp though) at last rest

    		3) place of last rest

So, if you get a password, it will return you to the same
place/level every time you use it.

Re .80:

Po is not IN Death Forest, but you knew that. It is near by however
and you have definitely passed the place where it is found. A little
