80.0. "GOLF" by RUBY::CORBETT (Water in the lab???? Nooooo!) Fri Mar 18 1988 18:30

Does anybody out there have golf?? It's one of my favorites and
was wondering how good other people have done at it. I've manged to score a
-16 under a couple of times. I've thought I was going to beat it a few times
but blew it on the 18th. I had to eagle the 18th a few times and just couldn't
pull it off. THe 18th is a tough hole to eagle when you need to.

My only problem with the game is that the course is always the same.
I wish they had put in either a random course or a couple of different courses.
Or put out a new cartridge.

Yes I have golf, My best score in also -16 I wasn't to sure
if it great score or not? The only problem I have with it is the
same course over and over! (but it's still fun!)

Just one of those spectacular kind of rounds.
    Best advice....Don't get schyed-out by hole #18.

Great!!! Those were other things I always wanted, a scorecard and
the ability to play with four people like in the arcades. -19 is the best I
have seen. My cousin hit it once, everything just seemed to be going for him.
You know, good winds, getting those close ones called on the green and a couple
of chip-ins off the green. My greatest accompishment as been eagling hole 2
three times in four consecutive rounds, the ball just kept heading for the
hole!

Can't wait...

Anyone else gotten a hole-in-one yet? Got mine in one of the
first few rounds I played.....don't recall exactly which hole...I
believe it was on the back.
I haven't managed to even break par yet but I haven't played
too many rounds. As far as #18 try, if you haven't already, putting
your drive in the clearing in the trees on the left. If the wind
isn't difficult it's an easy shot and you'll only have a 3-5 iron
left to the green. Makes it a shorter hole.

I've gotten a few Aces. I still can't remeber what holes are what
but one was on then par three with the little strip of land leading to it.
I hit a !w right into it. The other is the par three with the bunker in
front and the flag tucked in the left hand corner. I four Iron with a little
slice put it right in. I've come real close to double eagleing a couple of the
par fives. Once on the par five with the clearing in the woods I hit all of
my 1W (playing it to the left not into the clearing, that way you dont have to
shoot over a bunker) and was left with a short 4 or 5. I hit the Iron and
thought it was in. When the green popped up for putting part of my ball
was hanging over the whole.

I think I have only had 1 ace on the golf course. Like .-1, it was
the hole about 174 yards with the pin tucked on the left hand side.
The hole is on the back nine (13 or 14 I think). I aced it with
a 3 iron. I started the shot straight at the middle of the green
with a good draw on it and it came across from right to left, landed
on the green and finished up by rolling into the hole.

I was playing doubles and when I came up to 14th (I think) I aced
it with a 4 iron! so I says to my buddy "let see you do that!"
and he did! to aces in a row! ( I was first so I showed him the
way!)..8^) also got a double eagle! a few weeks back on the par
5 with the clearing in the woods..1w full with a little slice then
a 5 iron IN THE HOLE!
80.9PIGGY::LEWISTue Mar 22 1988 14:124
         Yeah.....that was the hole. I used a 3 or 4 iron, can't remember
which. Haven't come close on any of the others though.

Don't look for U.S. Golf anymore. I talked to a guy at Nintendo
and he said that is has been taken off the production list. No
date for any type of release or development. He did say that another
one was coming out as its replacement though. Unfortunately, he
didn't have much information about it. Sorry about the bad news.
I too have the Golf game and would like to see other courses. My
best score is an embarassment so I won't mention it. No aces but
plenty of eagles and birdies. Others I have talked with about the
game complain about not knowing the distance to the hole, how I
wish a real golf course would give me that information.

80.11RUBY::CORBETTWhy bother?Tue Mar 22 1988 18:5410

Dam, I was looking forward to it too.

Another little thing that bugs me about the game is that player one
(white) as a disadvantage. Whenever two people make the same shot (which
is pretty easy to do) the white player always hit first. Giving the
red player a good read every time.

80.13Alternative Way to PlayESPN::SWARTZThu Mar 24 1988 15:268
That's where you can really test your skill at the game. You can
choose a lower iron or wood and hit it with less power. That usually
screws up your opponent. However, it can really screw you up too.
I did that a couple of times to the guy I was playing against.
I had an 8 iron to the green but I took a 5 instead and reduced
my swing strength. I put it on the green. Since he was the same
distance, he took a 5 and hit it full strength....OB. As I say,
sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

No, I mean that GOLF automatically has winner of last hole lead

    it when I played.

> -< Alternate based on who won last hole? >-

I think we got a little confused. Golf does have the winner
of one hole hit first on the next hole but it is the second shot that
causes problems. If both people drive to the same spot (easily done) the
white player (player 1) always shoots first. Giving the Red players a
big advatage on alot of the holes.

The new golf game "Lee Trevino Mighty Golf" is now available, at
least it is in Colorado. It has 2 courses, 4 players and is more
difficult, especially the putting. It also has the distance to the
hole on every shot (including putts). The box also selects the club
for the next shot automatically and I have found that if you don't
like the club selection and change it, you generally can't select
the pre-selected club. I have only had the game for a couple of
days and because of other chores have not really had a lot of time
to play it and am looking forward to the weekend.

80.21Fighting Golf is GREAT!LDP::BENNETTJohn BennettThu Feb 16 1989 18:2317
I also have Lee Trevino's "Fighting Golf" -- it's orders of magnitude
better than "Golf". I have had no problem returning to the recommended
    club .. I don't understand the reference in .0.

There is a variant of the game (Nassau), where you can play against
the computer in match play, with bonus points for a long drive on
one hole and closest to the pin on another. The computer will choose
it's player randomly, then you choose which 9 holes to play.

An interesting oddity is that, occassionally (1 hole in every 4-5
games!), the computer will do something really, really idiotic.
Such as hitting a short 180 degrees away from the green, but it's
    much more enjoyable than Golf.

I'm starting to look for Pebble Beach Champsionship Golf, which
is supposed to be out soon.

re.22 One of the game mags mentioned that the only negative aspect
to this game were short putts. One has to be very fast with the
controller buttons to have a lite touch, otherwise a long return
putt is the result. Isn't there some sort of gauge that displays
how far you've taken the backswing?
The review I read called it the best golf simulation on
the market, even with this putting querk.
This included all the home computer titles such as Leader Board,
Mean 18 etc.. I've been looking for it without any success.

80.24Short Putts for Fighting GolfLDP::BENNETTJohn BennettWed Feb 22 1989 17:439
I have found the following hint for short putts (especially with
the two fast swinging players - Big Jumbo & Lee Trevino) useful.

Press the B button to start putting. Allow the guage to swing all
the way to the left, and then it will start to return to the right.
Before it gets back to the starting point (3 to 6 bars left of the
center line), press the B button again to hit the ball. You'll
get a short putt. Sometimes a very short putt!

80.25VINO::RASPUZZIMichael RaspuzziThu Mar 09 1989 12:4672
I picked up Golf: Pebble Beach Challenge from a fellow noter and
it was fairly enjoyable. I like it because you get to play Pebble
Beach. It's harder then Nintendo golf and it has its pluses and
    minuses.

    A few pluses:

o The shot indicator moves a little slower (especially when you
are near the green) so you can make better shots.

o The greens are "life like". Some greens have more than 1 or 2
    slopes to them.

o The graphics are pretty good, better then Nintendo golf.

o Has multiple screens. You can scan the entire hole from tee to
green. There is a score card screen.

o It shows you the cross section of a hole so if you hit the ball
to a fairway that slopes down, you get a little more run.

o You can control high shots or low shots to "cheat" the wind.

o If you start a swing at the ball and you don't like it, don't
hit the button to strike the ball and it turns out to be a practice
swing. You don't get that whiff shot like you do in Nintendo golf.

o You can play the course from the front tees or the back tees.

But of course, with every game, there has to be bad points about
them. I am an avid golfer so some of these are more nits than anything
    else.

o Club distances are terrible. You can barely get a full 8 about
130 yards with no wind. I'm sorry, but I want a golf game where
I can hit the ball like I can in real life or a golf game that lets
    me play like Jack Nicklaus.

o The ninth hole is a 508 yard par 4 from the back tees. Sorry folks,
but it ain't so in real life. It is impossible to reach this green
    in 2.

o You can't work the ball. I like being able to hook and slice (ala
    Nintendo golf).

o You can't aim accurately enough. On the 8th hole (dogleg right,
over the ocean) you can hit a straight drive and then be faced at
hitting over the ocean. I have not found a way to hit the ball directly
at the flag. If you swing with the given direction, you end up in
the bunker to the left of the green. If you move the aimer one notch
to the right, you miss the green to the right and land in the right
side green bunker. You need gale force winds to bring the ball back
    from the right.

o On the 7th hole, I'll hit a 3 iron (this hole is 149 yard long)
into a 10 mph wind and be 20 yards short of the hole.

All in all, it is not a bad game. It is real tough to score well
(unlike Nintendo golf). Chipping and putting are fairly enjoyable.
    I played a few rounds last night. Scores were 81, 82, 81, 79 and
    74. All scores were from the regular tees. I tried playing a couple
of holes from the back tees but got real miffed. I would hit a great
drive (all strength and perfectly straight) and it was not long
enough to hit the fairway!!! And depending on the kind of trouble
you are in, your club selection is limited (only a 7 iron and up
for sand, 3 iron and up for rough, 7 iron and up for deep rough).

OK, I have rambled on long enough. So I end with rating this game
about 7.5 out of 10. They could have done better. I'm waiting for
a cartridge with Augusta National (The Masters home course).

I got Fighting Golf this weekend and realy enjoy it. Boy,
putting is alot tougher then Nintendo GOLF. In Golf it's almost
an automatic once your on the green. With Fighting Golf I'm worried
about 3 putting some of them!

I have not been able to get the backspin to work. The dierections
say to hit the A button and then a direction on the controler. When are
you supposed to do this? After the swing? When it's in the air? When
it switches to the screen of the green? Does it matter what direction?

80.27Thumbs down on "Lee Trevino's..."MAGIC1::BEAUDETJUNK_YARD_DOG! DTN:297-6276Wed May 17 1989 13:3664

After reading 80.*, I decided to go out and try "Lee Trevino's....".

    WHAT A DISSAPPOINTMENT!!!

#80.23 made reference to some magazine calling this game the best
golf simulation on the market - including such games as MEAN 18...
    THROW THE MAGAZINE AWAY!

Let me tell you without ANY qualifications that MEAN 18 makes
this game look like miniature golf...there is NO CONTEST...MEAN
18 has so much more "game play" and superior graphics that the two
games cannot effecively be compared (and leader board is beyond
    MEAN 18!).

    Anyway, about the game...

After patiently waiting for my son to go to bed last night, I
started to play (ended up playing 3 rounds on the American course
using everyone except AMY) and tried 1 round on the Japanese course
(which looks like it belongs in the lost city of Atlantis) but quit
    after 8 holes...

The most annoying thing about the graphics was the fact the the
2 screens rarely matched each other in ball position - the "air
view - left screen" would often indicate the ball near a trap or
super ruff, while the "closeup" screen sometimes had the player
actually standing in water to chip!!! And why did the closeup
screen show the ball coming towards you instead of away...???

There also didn't seem to be a full selection of clubs (couldn't
seem to find a 2 Iron). There was only 1 "air view" of the green
no matter where you putted from - and chips would often run across
the green, past the fringe, yet remain on the putting surface...

As for direction, it seemed (not character dependent) each controller
acted differently - 1 would place the directional "X" anywhere while
the other seemed to maneuver only in a small circle...puzzeling!

In general, having experienced some truly outstanding graphics on
other Nintendo games, Golf's graphics were more like Colecovision.
I also found the swing process annoying - the fact that you must
start your swing, control the power, and control the accuracy is
just fine. But failing to stop near the arrow produced a "whiff"!
I opt for allowing contact with the ball EVERY TIME with the result
being a BIG SLICE! Unless I was wrong, it also seemed that stopping
the swing to the left of the arrow produced a right-ball movement
while stopping to the right produced a left-ball movement, which
seemed backwards to me and different from computer simulations...

I haven't played ANY other golf games on the Nintendo - and this
may in fact, be the best golf game for Nintendo so far...if it is
then they have a long way to go! And if the game I had (being rented)
was faulty, then only 50% of what I said I take back.

    Back to the computer...

I have to disagree. Nintendo golf is alot more challenging then
Mean 18. Mean 18 you just pick the club line it up and shoot. You
can move the ball (slice fade) but that is all. There is no wind (which
can drasticly change the way a hole plays), you can't fly a ball or keep it
low, and you can't put spin on the ball. It's doesn't have Nassau play with
longest drives and closest to the pin contests either. It also doesn't have
different players each with different capabilites. Mean 18 has better graphics
but I'd rather have a game with more features and better playability then one
with nice graphics.

Each players X goes out different distances, Chosuke can't hti as far but
he can be more acurate becuase his X goes out farther and his swing is slower,
Big Jumbo can kill a ball but his swing is fast and his X goes out only a
little.

I have to disagree with .27 on Lee Trevino. I like the game. It's much
better than Nintendo Golf. Anyway, I have a few questions about it...

    1. Has anyone had any luck applying backspin? If so, how are you doing
it? I can't seem to get it to work.

    2. Has anyone had trouble with the wind? It seems like it isn't really
blowing in the direction of the arrow or maybe I'm just mistaken.

Once in a while it works but I still can't do it when I want to. I
try to bounce the ball in the light rough and up onto the green, seeing
I can't realy on holding the green using backspin. If you figure it out
please let me know.

I had this problem at first too. The wind indicator does not show the
wind in realation to the main screen. It shows the direction of the wind
according to the view of the other screen (the one on the right.) Usualy
they match up but sometimes they don't. This is why after you make your shot
the wind arrow does a 180, becuase the view changes from looking behind the
golfer to looking at the golfer.

Any aces yet Jim? I have holed two, both on 'Sand Trap City'. Also seen an
Albatros (2 on a par 5) once.

Never played a full round of Nassau against the computer. The computer
just takes to long! Me and a couple of buddies play a couple fo rounds here
and there and keep a running total. I'm down about $2.50 now. Was up but then
one of them bought the game and has been practicing. I'm going to have to start
doing the same.

Mike, have you played the computer a full game yet? I can't seem to
beat "Pretty Amy". She hits 120 yard chips for birdies. It really
pisses me off. Also, you're not supposed to be able to hit a wood from
the deep rough but the computer does it all the time.

Lastly, when you play the computer, in some situations, it will keep
hitting the ball into the water, or once in awhile hit the ball the
opposite direction of the cup. This happens alot when the computer has
"Big Jumbo". Not so much with the others.

I still can't get backspin, but "Amy" can make the ball stop dead on
    the green.

I havn't played a whole game vs the computer yet, but I did notice
that they start chipping alot in in the later holes.
I havn't figured out backspin either. The other day four of us were
playing and I got stucck with Pretty Amy. on one home I wwas just off the
green maybe 30ish yards from the hole. I chipped on and started hitting all
the buttons and moving the controler in every way hoping to get the ball to
slow up somewhat. It hit the green and the backspin brought it right back off
green. Why can't I do that when i WANT to??!?!??!?!

When you finish a game, your best score will be displayed on the
"logo" screen...it will stay on that screen until you either
power off or hit reset...as soon as you hit reset, the game reverts
    to the +28 score...and I don't know anyone who ever got a +28...

If you just got into theNintendo golf game, watch out! The game
WILL lie to you on occassion. My nephew and I play it quite a bit
and the cartridge thinks nothing of lying! For example, it will
show you in a bunker, the screen will say BUNKER, but when you arrive
for your next shot, your ball will be on the grass. DO NOT BE FOOLED>
you are in a bunker, and must shoot your next shot with that in
mind. Also, don't be surprised if the game "forgets" to score a
birdie for you now and then...

Even with its faults, I enjoy it quite a bit. I've shot a -15 and

    re:45

I don't believe the backspin can REALLY be controlled at all.
I've seen backspin applied (heavily) when no buttons have been
pushed, and I've seen NO BACKSPIN AT ALL when the right buttons
are pushed. I think the talk of controllable backspin is a bunch
of marketing hype with no basis in reality.

We've found a number of other objectionable things about Fighting
Golf as well as the lack of backspin...for instance the game will
almost always select the wrong club for you, usually one or two clubs
off. Also, the Nassau game will let the machine's players do things
that can't be done by your player (try hitting 'half a club' and see
    what happens).

I'm thinking about writing a flaming letter to Nintendo about this
game. I'm very disappointed. While Fighting Golf is better than
regular Nintendo Golf, it has a lot more devious ways of cheating
    the players.

I've shot an even par on the American Course, and a 3 over on the
Japanese Course (using Chosuke). I should be shooting way under.

re. Fighting Golf

I think that the computer picks the club based on yardage to the cup
and with NO WIND (key point). So if there's no wind blowing and you hit a
full shot with the club the computer selects, you'll land on the
green and end up over it - because you can't use backspin. I haven't
had too much trouble with the selection, though. I usually just club
down and try to land it short. I went through every club with each player
using "Practice" to see what their distances were.

Yeah, the Nassau game is pretty frustrating. The computer hits a
driver from the rough regularly (or another wood), chips in 70%
of the time, and NEVER misses a putt from any distance. I may be
fantasizing, but I think that if you stay close stroke-wise, the
computer tends to play a little more "fairly". But I've never
    beaten it.

My playing time is limited by external sources (if you know what
I mean :-] ), so my best score is only about +5 on the US and
probably +12 on Japan (dinky little greens and aquatic doom
everywhere) with Chosuke. Overall, I think it's a darn good game.
    An 8.5, easy.

Yea, but mines not as bad. I can pick out the arrow but only part
of the number. Sometimes you tink it's a five but its a 3. Makes it more
challenging.

As far as the computer giving you the wrong club, your aksing for too
much. You have to know what club to pick (just like real golf). You have
to take into account the wind, amount of green to work with....

I've shot a -8 on US and a -5 on the Japanese course.

I have the same problem with the windage numbers...they're usually out
of view...at first I thought it was my TV but after talking to others
I've found that they have the problem also...no one has told me how to
'fix' it...it seems to be worse on some sets than others...don't know
    why...

another bothersome feature is that the players will sometimes 'stand'
right on the strength/direction indicator line, and this makes it much
harder to figure out where to stop the pointer...

I have found the Fighting Golf game to be extremely aggravating...
I played my nephew the other night and he was about 6 strokes ahead of
me, then the system made him 5 putt on one hole!!! the ball would not
drop no matter what he did!!! the program ensured that our game would
end up close, so it made him lose 5 strokes all on one hole!!!

I'm beginning to categorize this as a kiddie game, one which cannot
be mastered by skill or understanding but one which depends on basic
luck...at the beginning of the game, the system selects the winner
and plays out a pre-programmed pattern...very little of what the player
does will impact the final outcome

    Your thoughts?

be easily substantiated by anyone playing the game. Now I wait and see
whether or not my letter means a damn thing to the good folks at NES.

I'm hoping for a reply, telling me how wonderful the game really is,

    RE: .53

I've got the Pebble Beach game. My opinion: don't waste your money.

    1. It's set up so your longest drive is no longer than about 215-220
yards. Other clubs roughly correspond. Try playing Pebble from
the back tees with 3-woods for half your second shots.

    2. Shot direction is quantum; that is, you really can't fine-tune
it. There are a couple holes where it is impossible to hit the
green. You can aim left or right of the green, but not at the
    green.

    3. The rough has a ridiculous effect upon the shot. Longest club
you can use is a 3-iron. Ball goes 100-125 yards tops.

    4. Graphics not good.

    5. It isn't very challenging to hit good shots. The error margin
is large compared to some of the pc-based games.

I got it for Christmas from my beloved wife, so I occasionally
put Pebble into the NES for her benefit. I would like it much
better if the distances were more realistic.

Personally, I really like Lee Trevino's Fighting Golf....what's wrong
with shooting a -7 as a best score? Would shooting a -18 make you feel

My only complaint is that I've not consistently been able to apply

80.56The Reasons I Hate Fighting GolfMORO::WHICKER_BIThese ARE the Nineties!Sun Feb 25 1990 20:1550
    Jim,

My complaints about Fighting Golf stem from a variety of shortcomings
and apparent bugs. To begin with, the upper part of the screen where
the wind spped and direction are indictaed is not fully in view. I've
asked around and its not my monitor, its the way the game was
    programmed.

Additional dislikes are: the club distances are totally inconsistent
(you can hit a full 1W from the tee for 220yds., and hit another from
the fairway for 260+ yds), a fully hit 5 iron with no wind will travel
about 75-100 yds thru the air (ridiculous!), some holes are pre-set so
that the player cannot reach them under ANY circumstances on the first
shot (a penalty stroke is mandatory in these cases, mostly involving
water), a player cannot shoot the green (you must aim WAY in front and
hope that the ball stops when it arrives on the green), the animated
player ofter stands "on his line" making it extremely difficult to tell
where the correct aiming spot is to hit a good shot, the putting game is
absurd (the markes indicating break speed and direction are very
innaccurate, and if the player relies on them to line up a putt, he'll
miss more often than not, and finally the wind speed and direction
sometimes have absolutely no effect on the ball or have an opposite
effect (a ball will travel INTO a headwind instead of being pushed down
    by it...

As far as the scoring goes, I believe you'll find that the system will
keep you relatively close to your opponent's score, especially in
Nassau play. You might be way ahead but the system will MAKE you four
or five putt, and if this hasn't happened to you, I'd love to exchange
cartridges with you! Also, what about a long drive contest between
Super Mex and Chosuke, when Mex gets a 9 MPH wind going with him ,and
Chosuke gets a 6 MPH wind? Mex can out drive every player except
Jumbo...why give him a MORE favorable wind against a player who cannot
beat him in the drive distance???

I'm not looking for a -18 score (although that would be great!), but I
do want to believe that my button pushing skills and understanding of
the game will let me play a better round than someone with lesser
skills or no understanding of the game. None of this seems to matter.
The system determines the winner, not the skilful play of the
    competitors...

The real point is that I don't enjoy playing this game because of what
I perceive to be its many shortcomings and faults. If you enjoy
playing it, then by all means, have a ball!

    Hi Bill,

Truthfully, I've noticed some of the things that you speak of. One that
particularly irks me is the wind problem where the screen says it's
blowing right, but the ball breaks left...and vice versa.

As for the club distances, I'm not a golfer, so I wouldn't know if the
distances are inaccurate. I've gotten used to the game, and generally I
play the same golfer every game (Mex), and I pretty much know how long
he can hit, and what clubs to use when.

Overall, I still like the game. Every game I've played has some bugs or
shortcomings. The game I had prior to Fighting Golf was Nintendo Golf.
I feel Fighting Golf is a much better game. I'm not saying that there
is no room for improvement, but I definitely enjoy the game.

I too have noticed most of the things in .56, however I still very
    much enjoy this game.
I usually play Chosuke, and his club distances are not completely
realistic, but are usually consistant. The greens are not marked
completely correct, but play that same way every time. I can usually
read enough of the wind gauge to play it. Shots sometimes vary
in distance, but that happens in real golf all the time, from wind
    blockage by trees, ect.

I totally agree that there are several imperfections, but this is
still the closest to realistic golf game I have played.

After reading all of the replies in this topic i decided to add
my two-bits. I like "Fighting Golf". I also will never play the
computer in a match because of the bizzare things that happen
with the computers player. As far as wind speed and direction,
we have a 27 inch tv and have no problem gettinga full display
on the screen, it is no problem figuring direction or velocity.
It does affect ball flight more than actual wind of the same
magnitude though. As far as putting goes this game is far superior
to the other NES type golf games offered and I am amazed at the
number of long putts I roll in now that I know the "break" on the
greens. I guess that since I play a lot of golf it is not important
to me to shoot a tremendously low score. Anytime I get under par
it was a good round. If I had to face holes on a real course that
were of the length that they are on this game, I would be hard
pressed to ever par a hole let alone make a birdie. I guess like
any game, there are secrets that can let you score lower but if
played like a real course it can be a lot of fun. Just don,t play
    the computer, it cheats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My favorite is when Jumbo will turn 180 from the hole, hit a shot
150 yards away, and then turn around and hit in a 3 iron for
birdie !!! The computer did show me how to hit in a lot of chip
    shots though.

Like most of the golf games putting actualy gets too easy after
a while. I now sink 10-20 footer with regularity and often sink the longer
25-40 footers. 25 foot with three different brakes and after playing enough

    programmer who thought this up...

By the way, note .60 says that on a 27" TV you have no problem getting
the full/total display. Do you know how many lines of resolution your
TV has? Mine is a 25" TV and I can't get the total display...maybe
your TV has a different 'set up'?

I have a 19" Sony Trinitron and have no problem getting the full
display of wind speed and direction. I have been playing this game
for a couple months and aside from a few minor irritations have
had a lot of fun playing this game.
I got Jack Nicklaus 18 greatest holes championship golf as a gift
last week and was pretty disappointed with this one. Graphics weren't
that good and play was fairly easy. I think Fighting Golf is much
    more realistic than this one.

Overall I enjoy the game but wish they would really put some thought
into a new golf game that was more realistic and fun to play.

80.64If Only I could Program!MORO::WHICKER_BIThese ARE the Nineties!Mon Mar 12 1990 03:5129
If I had the slightest idea of where to begin, and the programming
talent necessary, I'd create my own 'golf game'. I'm really beginning
to believe that the guys (and gals) who programmed the available
golf games have never played real golf, and probably have never even
    seen it played!

If I had the know-how, I'd like to make a number of improvements
to the Fighting Golf game...there's a lot I'd like to keep, but
there is definitely some room for improvement...the graphics are fine
and the 'basics' are quite satisfactory, but if I could 'play' the
game with a Nintendo (or whoever) programmer, I could demonstrate a
number of 'simple fixes' which would make the game more realistic
and probably more attractive to a wider audience (more sales!)...

I don't think thegame should be any easier, just more consistent
and geared so that skill is a requirement of a good score, not just
the 'luck of the draw'...and I'd make it so that playing against
the system (Nassau) would be more fun...perhaps by giving the
Nassau players a quirk or two, or having them mis-hit the ball
    once in awhile...

Anyway, if anyone sees any NEW or DIFFERENT golf games on the market,
please let me know...I'm anxious to try another variation...

    Regards,
      BW

I saw a new Golf game for Nintendo this weekend. It was the one people
have already alluded to. I forgot the company who makes it but it is
titled something like "Jack Nicklaus' 18 holes".

Those who have tried the Nicklaus game have been somewhat disappointed
with it...(see earlier notes)...I appreciate the input, however,
because my quest for the Ultimate Nintendo Golf Game goes ever
onward! Perhaps within the next decade ot two someone will program
a really terrific golf game, but I guess I'm doomed 'til then!

80.67Nicklaus Game : Not Bad!!MORO::WHICKER_BIThese ARE the Nineties!Mon Mar 19 1990 22:4831
I tried the Nicklaus game over the weekend...its interesting and a lot
easier than Fighting Golf. Nicklaus has some features that would be
really nice if added to Fighting Golf, such as 'extra power' and the
ability to accurately gauge the power of any club. All players are
basically the same, no individual traits (long hitter, short hitter,
etc.), and the statistics are fantastic...green hit, fairways hit,
birdies, eagles, longest drive, etc. Nicklaus will also allow
    threesomes and foursomes...

The Nicklaus graphics leave a lot to be desired and are nowhere near as
good as Fighting Golf, and the Nicklaus game takes quite awhile to
repain the screen between shots, but it does allow the player to shoot
the greeen without bouncing into the unknown...

I'd rank the Nicklaus game just a shade below Fighting Golf. Nicklaus
has a number of shortcomings but has some very nice features. Its
easier than Fighting Golf because it doesn't require three button
pushes per shot, and because the wind doesn't have as much effect on
the ball's flight as in Fighting Golf. I won't go out and buy the
Nicklaus game but I will borrow it to play from time to time.

By the way, I finally got a response from Nintendo in regards to the
flaming letter I sent them...A FORM LETTER telling me to try their 800
number for game counselling! I expected a more personal response
especially given the time and effort I put into their letter...but with
their sales going thru the roof, I'm sure they really don't give a hoot
    about one dissatisfied player...

I lent Lee Trevino's Fighting Golf to a person I work with and he
couldn't see the top of the screen at all (windage, hole #,ect..).He
also mentioned having a problem with seeing the whole screen (bottom
clipped this time) of Silent Service. He called Nintendo on this and
was told he had to adjust his TV. They (or he) didn't give more details
on adjustments. The same golf game works and looks fine on my TV..For
    what it's worth..

80.69TV set adjustments.TIS::LEPIREThu Mar 29 1990 15:2718
As an old TV repair person let me throw in my 2 cents worth. It sounds
like the vertical adjustments are off on that particular set. The
adjustments are vertical height ( sometimes shown as VER HT) and
vertical linearity. These are normally screwdriver adjustment screws
located in the rear of the set or inside a door in the front of the
set. The vertical height should be adjusted first and then the
linearity ( they are inter-dependent ). After adjusting the height set
the vertical hold so the picture rolls from top to bottom and watch the
action of the black strip. If the strip changes size as it progresses
down the screen then adjust the linearity ( may have to go back and
fine tune height adjustment if affected by linearity adjustment), if
strip does not change size then you are finished. This should make
screens completely visible. You can check if the adjustments are needed
by putting a game picture on the screen in the pause mode and using the
vertical hold ( make the picture roll) check to see if some of the
picture was off screen. If this sounds too complicated just call me and
    I will explain further.

I did the vertical adjustment, and lo and behold, I saw
      what I have been missing.

      Gee, Nintendo helpline is good.

If you hold the left side of the direction (black) button and press
the A button when selecting the player, the player will be a lefty..
I saw this in the Nintendo magazine.

It took me a while to figure it out, but it is possible to apply
    backspin at will.

When you go through the swing process, press the left or right cross at
the same time you press the "a" button (for all three "a" presses).
Press the buttons hard, it seems to make a difference.

Save your money !! It is a very simple game with not a lot of
challenge after playing just a few times. I prefer Fighting
Golf of the 3 I have tried. (nes golf, pebble beach golf,
and fighting golf) THer are some other ones out now but I
    haven't tried them.
