307.0. "FAXANADU" by DNEAST::DUMAIS_BOB () Mon Aug 07 1989 20:02

	I'd like to start this Topic for discussion on the game cartridge;

				FAXANADU

Hudson Soft and Falcom companies are mentioned in the opening
credits of this game. It's a Link type R.P.G. in a different type of
setting. Password feature is used.

The Hero of the story is you. There is no name for the character
you are using in the game. The story starts off as you return from a
journey, to find that your town ELOIS, an Elf town, is deserted and in
ruin. You start your quest by visiting people you come to in the town and
find out that meteorites have hit what is known as the World Tree and
awoken the dwarf kingdom. The dwarf's have come to destroy the World Tree
and it's inhabitants. Your task is to first start three fountain springs
running, which have been stopped from flowing, and then destroy the dwarf
king. There are eight towns which must be explored. Many people talk to
you giving clues and so forth. The same person may tell you something
different, once you complete a section or have accomplished gaining an
item. There is usually a useful item in each place you visit and complete.

There are different levels of weapons, armor, shields, and magic.
You can carry up to eight items with you as well as selecting one to use.
Items are things like potions which restore your life, or keys which open
certain doors. All items are bought at shops you find along the way. You
buy the items with gold you get from defeating certain monsters. Some
monsters will give bread which restores your characters power. Some don't
give gold or bread, but will increase your experience points.

Experience points determine your title and power. You start as a
Novice and get to an Aspirant once you reach the point value needed and so
on up to sixteen levels. You can only gain a new title by visiting a Guru
in one of the towns or in one of the lands. Once you get a new title you
will receive a new password and, if you are destroyed or if you would like
to start the game at another time, you start at the point where you last
talk to a Guru and received the password. One bad (or good) point about
restarting is that you only get the minimum amount of experience points and
golds for the title level you stop with.

I have found this game to be challenging and fun. Nintendo power
review, rated the game very high. I rate it a strong 9. The only other
game rating from Nintendo which I have seen higher is MEGA MAN II. That's
next on my list!

Good game - I just got it, too. Now I need a hint:
    (possible spoiler):
How do I get out of the World Tree? There is ultimately
a door with the message asking if I need a ring to open
it - but I have the ring (onyx?) already - it's the third
one, anyway. Is this the exit? What else do I need to pass?

307.2I agree..great gameHPSTEK::SCHWARTZTue Aug 08 1989 12:0034
I just finished this game last night.. the ending was nice.
To those still playing the game, just wait until you get to the maze at
the end..it will get you thinking. Had me running in circles for a
while. I love the style of this game. It was nice to play after all the
shoot'em ups that have been around. While not as good or challenging
as Link, I found the graphics to be real good. 9 in my book. I also
had a few dislikes.....such as having to spend a lot of needless
time to get enough gold to buy items. I also think that the item select
screen should have been first on the window menu. Still a good buy and
a year from now after I have forgoten most of the game, it will be fun
    to play again.

    SPOILER:

You need 4 rings to enter the last castle and have to be suited up for
battle. this will happen automatically if you have all the required
items. REmember to talk to all people in town again as what they say
changes when you get all required items. Don't panic in the maze and
look for one thing that is different there. To new players... spend
time to get the money up for the death magic at the begining of the
game. Things will be alot less frustrating at times.

307.5"Mist Town" QueriesWORDS::MSMITHThu Sep 28 1989 14:5716
I need some help/spoilers in the "Mist Town" of MASCON. I
presently have 22,000 exp. points (can't remember title) with Death
Magic, Magic Shield, Long Sword, (2) life potion jars, magic boots,
mattock & (2) Q keys. I've gotten the Mantra but loose most of my
items in the process. Once I get to what I believe is the "Tower
of Suffer" I keep getting killed & returned to the Mantra Guru's
house with virtually no items left over. What is the item/items
that I have to get here & how the heck do I go to the next stage?
Also, there is another (red) dungeon where invisible ???s attack
& eventually kill me--what's the scoop with these???s--Any spoilers
would be appreciated on any aspect or any level of this game. I
DO think this is an excellant game & rate it right ip there as a
combo of METROID & THE ADVENTURES OF LINK & well worth purchasing.

In going from screen to screen look for a
change in your characters movement....his jumping or walking movement

Great game. Not too hard, but you have to be careful and thorough.
Very creative scenarios and graphics. The battles are just challenging
enough to elevate your excitement level, but not leave you too
frustrated (except when you're holding 5 bottles of red potion and die
because you got caught up in the battle and forgot to check your life
level ... like in Link). This action is what separates a great game
from just a good game. You never get that pumped-up excitement from
defeating the Dragonlord in Dragon Warrior, for example. In Faxanadu,
    the adrenaline flows.

We never even noticed a "maze".... spoiler follows:

After entering the final place of evil, we just looked for the
out-of-the-ordinary ladder that seems to indicate something interesting
lurks above - a ladder that is usually difficult to reach, or requires
winged boots, etc. Maybe it was just luck, but we saw it right away
(after disposing of the snake). Everything was real straightforward
after that. Just follow all the hints that are given to you.

307.22Stuck in Forepaw! Help!FDCV07::LEBLANCRuth E. LeBlancTue Dec 12 1989 15:3129

Gee -- and I thought METROID drove me nuts; I'm about to throw this
game out the window!!! I'm extremely stuck in Forepaw -- can anyone
    help??

I've found everything I think I need to find, but can't get beyond one
room which I imagine has something good in it since it's so hard to get
into! I don't really know how to describe it, so please bear with this
    cursory description:

It's in the 'middle' of the top Forepaw areas (not the left where the
big blue dragon is -- I already killed him once or twice, and not to
the right where the blue sky/fountain is). This one, up near the very
top, has a room with a snake in it -- I killed the snake then went to
the next room. In this room is an odd-looking character who sits up on
the top right of the screen. As soon as I enter this room, big balls
start falling on my head; it takes about one good bonk on the head and
I'm dead. I never even have enough time to drink my potion. I've
tried the winged boots to get into the room and kill the guy who seems
to be causing these things go boink on my head, but can't get past the
    doorway.

See what I said about a terrible description? Any help would certainly
be welcome. I've gone into that room SO MANY TIMES over the last few
nights, and I just can't get anywhere.

Killing the Mother Brain wasn't this hard, was it???

Talk to the guru who will turn on the fountain. After you have turned

Perhaps I'm getting a bit thick-brained here, but something isn't working
right! I've gotten everywhere in Forepaw, but **STILL** haven't been
able to get to the elixir. Can't go any further without it, either.

Isn't the Elixir to the right of the stone dropper??? From the looks
of it, I thought I'd have to go through the stone dropper and then
behind him would be the elixir. I've tried to get to the elixir via
the 'tunnel' to the right of it (i.e., fly up with the winged boots),
and I just find myself sitting on the ledge and getting no where.

I haven't been able to get any further to the right of the Stone
Dropper area; I keep running into dead ends.

Am I missing something??? I should now have the ability to move rocks
(I have the Ruby Ring); is there some rock I can move to get through
    one of those dead ends?

This is so frustrating. I'm now up to Superhero, but I feel like a

was very enjoyable. The graphics and sound were some of the best
I've seen or heard on the NES system. It played like a Rygar
with a password feature. There was nothing too complicated where
you had to map and the boss creatures were fairly easy to conquer.
Overall, a 7 out of 10 rating. Worth a rent first before buying.
Although, I will say that this is one game I probably will hold on
to and play again. Now, on to Ultima ......

would agree with the comments on graphics and sound and overall
found the game to be fun and worth the money. My 6 yr old son found
it easy enough to manuver but needed my help reading and interpreting

I got this game for Christmas and I love it. I haven't been this into
a game since Zelda. I have a couple of questions concerning the mist
    world:

    1) I found the pendant in the Tower of Sorrows, but it seems to hurt
my fighting ability rather than help it. The Dwarves with swords now
take 5 blows to kill instead of 4. Did anyone else notice this? Is
there something I need to do to envoke the pendant?

    2) I have been to both towns in the misty land and I don't seem to be
able to go any further. I have found two seperate towers (Forepaw and
Mist, I believe) that just don't seem to lead anywhere. One is just
before the first mist town and the other is just after the second.
Anyone have any hints? (no spoilers yet please)

    3) In the second town the is a tavern that has an old man who lost his
magic and another man who gave me armor but now says he is thirsty. I
assume that elixer is needed but I can never get it to this town
without having to use it. The only thing I want to know in this case
is if I'm on the right track. I got pretty frustrated abut the elixer
and will be even more so if I finnally do it and I didn't need to.

    Thanks,

No spoilers here. You need to look around more in misty town. I
found this to be somewhat challanging and time consuming. I found
many of the townspeople to say things that were of no help or
meaningless. On the topic of elixer: Elixer was a very valuable
commodity to me. I strove to always keep it in my menu. If I go
killed after using it, I always went back to the montra that listed
elixer, even if I did something great while losing it. I just went
back and did the great thing again and again until I did it without
    using elixer.

Just my method, do what you feel is right.

Have fun, Don't try too hard. The rest of the game is better than
the first, and a bit more challanging.

We have been running around Forepaw for sometime now and have managed to get 2
of the three fountains running again. Having looked around for some time now
without success, our questions are:

o Where is the third fountain and how do you get it to flow?
o Aren't we supposed to get a Ruby ring? Or does that have to wait
until the 3rd fountain is up and going?

Any/all spoilers welcome. We (that's me 'n kids) like to find things out and
explore ourselves but we've been stuck here so long that we need to go on.

The three fountains in Forepaw (spoiler follows)

    	1. First fountain - leave town to the right, up the ladder set then
across to the left into the door with the 'J' key. Go about a third
of the way into the chamber, then up, through the room with the
frog who drops rocks, get the elixir (make sure your power level is
ok or the elixir will get used on you - if so, you can leave the
room and reenter, and more elixir will be there). Go back down and
further into the chamber, up again until you come to the guru. Give
him the elixir.Go down back to front third of chamber, go up,
through droagon room, into next room, get JO key from guru. Leave
    	the chamber.
    	2. Second fountain. Go back, down the mountain past the entrance to
the town, all the way down. Start to the right at 'ground level',
use JO key to enter door. (Careful here - monster attacks quickly -
if he blows you out the door you will need another JO key to get
in.) Go to the back of the chamber, see the guru who will turn on
the fountain. He will give you a ruby ring to enable you to move
    	rock (critical to leaving forepaw).
    	3. Third fountain. After leaving 2, go right. You will be at a
screen where the sky is all blue and there are no buildings. Select
the wing boots, fly up, find break in the sky, go through columns
and up again to fountain in the sky. See guru, turn on third
who will turn on third fountain. Jump down, go through columns,
down again and you are back at 'surface level'.

    To leave Forepaw:

Go back like you were going to the first fountain, but do not enter
'J' door. Go just left, you will be at the right side of a
fountain. If it is not flowing you missed something. If it is, jump
up on fountain and push top stone to the left (push for a few
seconds - nothing happens at first). A ladder will drop down and
you are on your way. (Hope you bought a 'Q' key to unlock the
    door.)

I'm having problems getting my mantra to work in some cases and I can't figure
out if it's me or the game. Normally it works quite fine but in this
particular case I'm starting out in Victim and going back several towns to get
some stuff. After getting what I want, I let my self die, to be ressurected
back in Victim (since that was the last guru I visited). At this point I visit
the guru and get a new mantra WHICH DOESN'T WORK!

I've tried this several times and very carefully check the mantra to make sure
I've copied it down correctly.

Question - is this a glitch or it it supposed to work this way? If it IS
supposed to work this way what is the algorithm it's using?

re: bad mantras

I'm glad to hear others had problems in Victim as well, but it doesn't make me
feel a whole lot better either!

Basically, I started out in Victim and went back several towns to get the magic
shield (stopping at several Guru's on the way). To make a long story short,
an hour later (and several experience levels higher as well as the shield and
5 or 6 mantras in hand) I died and virtually NONE of the mantras worked! Some
were collected in Victim, but several were also collected in Forepaw and Apolune
(the town with the Magic Shield in it).

The point is, can I expect this type of behavior in other types of the game?
My current attitude is to stop playing if I can't be certain of being able to
recover. Might the problem be related to going "backwards" to previous towns
(I can't really believe that one).

Anyhow, I'm going to put my playing activities on hold for a little while and
try to contact someone at a hot-line to see what is the problem.

Had anyone had any experience with the hot-line people? Does anyone have a
hot-line number off the top of their head? Is there any "best" time to call?

The font used in the mantras can be very hard to make out,
at least for me. I can't tell a lower case "c" from a lower
case "e", for example. Upper case "O" and zero are practically
indistinguishable, also. To make it worse, my handwriting is
bad enough that I can't always read the mantra later.

With all that, I have never found a mantra that didn't work,
once I tried the appropriate variations on what teh letters
could be. I might get "mantra is in the wrong" several times,
but eventually they all got me back.

Monte, there is a menu interface when you are in the various shops

There is some dexterity required, but it isn't that bad. If you

The bummer is there is no guru in Mascon! You have to do some SERIOUS searching
to find him. We sort of cheated via a map in Nintendo Power and that made it
a LOT simpler. If you don't want any further help, all I can say is look ALL

Also, you may have seen earlier notes that I entered about my mantra not

Hi!

Talk about frustrating, I'm stuck between apolune (spP and forepaw.
After leaving Forepaw I get to a tower entrance that you need a
key to get in, no problem.... I climb the ladders and make it to
this blue thing flying around destroy him, collect the gold pieces
and what I guess is the mattock. Right now I've killed the blue
fyling thing whatever it is about 4 times now, each time getting
a mattock. I can't select it to use, Where oh where do I go now.
I spent about an hour jumping and hopping around trying to find
anything that may be hidden. I have the following items.

     1. experience points 1350
     2.Status Swordman
     3. Armor is leather
     4. magic deluge, death
     5. shield small, magic
     6. small dagger

Is there something missing that I 'm supposed to have? A definite
    spoiler is needed!!

I can find boots. I keep going back to the town before to get some

O.K., I have had it. I need to save my sanity and get out
of the MIST TOWN of MASCON.

An all out spoiler is needed. The one place in Mascon I
have not been is the building that has the mark of "ACE". I imagine
that this is my ticket out. Am I right or wrong ? Either way I need to
know how to get out and or where to get the "ACE" key. If the "ACE" key
is in Mascon then I guess I have not been everywhere, but it sure feels
it. I have spent more time in this area then in any other of any game.

307.82EXPLORING into TROUBLE!NETWMN::BLANEYNot just a job, an OBSESSIONMon May 14 1990 11:4631
OK, I really need help. I have extracted and categorized this entire
note looking for clues/help, but to no avail. I have been playing
with no hints (*YET*), but my frustration level has risen to it's max.

    THE JOURNEY:

I was in MASCON, I went through the Q door and got the pendant. I came
out and started checking around. I found the store with the ELIXER,
the DEATH magic, the RED POTION and something else. Anyway, I bought
everything I didn't already have. Then I went exploring somemore. I
had a pair of winged boots from the previous jaunt, so I flew up to an
unreachable stair case. Then I found my way to the MIST TOWN, then I
    got a mantra.

    THE PROBLEM:

I KNOW I'm missing a LOT of stuff. I don't think I was done with
MASCON, but now I can't find anything. I went through MIST town to a
castle K, but there wasn't ANYTHING in there except some wenches who
shot ninja stars at me and some grunts up above.

    THE SOLUTION:

Either a major spoiler, or enough hints to find what I've missed. The
mist town also remarks about a SHIELD, but I think I've missed that
    TOO!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Laurel

I hope people are still reading this note. I'm stuck. I can't seem to
kill the fireball throwing guy in the mistworld castle (the one with
the mark of QUEEN by the door). I am at whatever level requires 12500
points, have DEATH magic, large shield and long sword. The monster
kills me with 3 hits and I am unable to inflict any damage during that
time. Even using red potions doesn't help (I'm not fast enough to use
it more than once or twice).

How do you kill this guy? I can't find anyplace to stand that is safe.

307.90Better description of where I am stuck.LANDO::PREISIGFri Jun 28 1991 14:1918
It seems that I have not described where I am very well, or maybe it is
not fire that is being thrown at me (its round and takes only 3 hits to
pulverize me). Here is another attempt to describe where I am (after
the form feed since there may be spoilers here):

I'm to the right of MASCON in the mist world. I've visted the Gurus house
and then went to the left and up. It may be called the tower of sorrows
or something like that. I need the Q key to get in. There are two halves
at the top. The only thing worthwhile is in the right half. The guy
shoots fireballs (or some other round thing) in groups of four. He has
wings that fold forward when he shoots. I've seen the same monster in
other places, but was able to kill him by standing out of harms way and
hitting him when he came up. There seems to be nowhere to stand in this
    case.

I hope this description better decsribes where I am. Thanks for any
    help.

307.91Try this !!RAYBOK::COOPEROne-ton Tomato !Fri Jun 28 1991 19:0812
I don't know why, but I think the call that monster a dwarf.
There are two ways I dealt with them and it worked wherever
I found them. Is this where you climb a ladder and then have
to fight him right at the top ? If so, time his shots and hop off the
end of the ladder, blast him with some death magic and get bvack on the
ladder. YOu take some hits but get in some good licks also. Just keep
recharging on the ladder before your next attack. Or, you can just
time his shots and then run for it when he flies to the top of the
chamber. ONce again, you take some hits but you can get to the next
chamber and then recharge, pick up whats there and run through him
again to get out. THese tactics worked for me when there was no place
    to stand without getting hit.
307.92That's the place! Do I need more protection?LANDO::PREISIGMon Jul 01 1991 12:479
YES!! This is the monster I'm trying to kill. I had tried something
similar to what you suggest, except I tried Jumping over his shots.
But I can only take three hits before I die (before recharging). I'll
try your suggestion next. Do I need more protection than I now have?
Or more experience? Is three hits and you're out good enough?

    Thanks.

I don't know if your level has anything to do with the
problem, 3 hits may be about right for a dwarf attack though.
Also, I would pause and recharge in mid battle sometimes. I
think it takes at leas 5 hits from Death magic to eliminate
this monster. Good luck, wait till you see the creature at
    the end !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just conpleted this game. Here the easiest way to beat this monster

Just before climbing the ladder in the screen before the ladders, is
two little guys going back and forth quickly. Kill these guys. Try
killing them three or four times or maybe more by leaving the screen
and coming back. Sooner or later you'll get a potion that says 'You are
protected from attacks' or something like that. Grab the potion and go
directly to the ladder, climb it and go get that DWARF.

Make sure you have an extra red potion or two!

Well I finally finished FAX this past weekend. I really enjoyed it.
Like some of the other folks who played it, I thought the end was

This was the first game that I played and won, of course I did have
