605.1If you liked Ultima I, it's a good game!EVETPU::WALSHTPU knows... RISC/Ultrix!Fri Mar 01 1991 14:1922
    It's a nice departure from the usual hack'n'slash game. You have to
    become an avatar of goodness, which means that you can't lie, cheat or
    steal without causing yourself grief. (It's really a pain if you do!
    I know - I had to re-earn my avatar status once or twice because I got
    stuck.)

    It's the same combat and dungeon system as the original Ultima. If you
    like reflex battles like in Link, give this one a pass. If you aren't
    worried so much about that, the layout of the dungeons is a bit more
    interesting, since they are all connected together.

    I'm currently trying to turn my three keys into the single key needed
    to open the gates for the final dungeon. It's taken a LOOOOOOOOOOOONG
    time to get this far!

    - Chris

    Oh, still reading? Yep - here's a hint:

    Don't wander around with a party. Why share the experience points, and
    spend the money to get equipment for all those characters? Leave 'em
    at the hostel, and advance as quickly as possible.
605.2How do the enemys appear???POETS::SCHNARECHARLIE SCHNAREFri Mar 01 1991 20:326
    In the first Ultima when you raise you experience level a couple of
    times the enemys outside get a lot harder. Does the same apply here. Or
    do the enemies get harder as you go into different lands.

    Are there even enemies wandering around outside. If not is is like
    dragon warrior or final fantasy??
605.3Missile weaponsDDIF::WALSHTPU knows... RISC/Ultrix!Sun Mar 03 1991 16:4018
    Monster encounters are more like DW than the first Ultima. You don't
    see the enemy wandering around. You just happen to be walking around,
    and something jumps you. If you see them coming, they're at the top of
    the screen, and you're at the bottom, and it looks just like Ultima I.
    If you didn't see them coming, the monsters start out right next to
    you, and things get a bit more interesting.

    I didn't find any of the wandering or dungeon dwelling monsters to be
    that difficult to defeat, until at relatively high levels you start
    running into large numbers of Balrogs or Reapers. Even they aren't all
    *that* tough - it's just that they put you to sleep, so you get beat on
    a bit more before you can wake up and kill them. If you aren't keeping
    good care of your party, I suppose you could have trouble.

    Get lots of missile weapons, as early as possible, and take out the
    spell-throwing monsters first. That will keep you pretty safe.

605.4WHAT DID YOU PAY FOR IT???SUBSYS::SCHNARECHARLIE SCHNARESun Mar 03 1991 19:569

    I was looking around the other day to buy the game at KB toy store and
    they told me that it runs for $59 when they have it in. How much dough
    did you sacrifice to get this game?

    Also do you have spells that eradicate a lot of enemies at once or are
    they just meant for one monster. Like in ultima I you could use an
    undead spell and kill a lot of guys. Are there certain spells that kill
    alot of guys at once.
605.5SQUISH, said the mage!DDIF::WALSHTPU knows... RISC/Ultrix!Mon Mar 04 1991 15:3825
    I found it just before Christmas at 54.95 in the Electronics Boutique
    at the Upper Valley Mall in Springfield, Ohio. (That's the town where
    my folks live.) It was obviously available as a fluke, and I bought
    the last copy with no questions asked. I haven't regretted the price
    yet - but I make no claims to being a representative Nintendo player,
    so you may or may not find it worth the money.

    There are spells that kill lots of creatures at once - no matter how
    powerful they are. Trouble is, you may not have the ingredients that
    you need to cast the spell, and you also need to determine some of the
    recipes for some of the spells.

    There are a wider variety of spells available, and you start off
    knowing some pretty good ones. (Your character supposedly starts off
    where he/she ended in Ultima I, so you are reasonably powerful at the
    beginning.)

    I repeat, if you liked Ultima I, you'll like The Avatar. If it didn't
    appeal, I doubt you'll like this one any better. The same general
    strategy applies - the better provisioned you are, the better chance
    you have. Provisioning can take a long time - but at least in The
    Avatar there are so many places that you have to go, that you can do
    the requisite "monster bashing" on the way from place to place.

    I assume those are accurate, since I don't have my stuff to check it
    out. I really wish such spoilers were hidden behind a form feed or
    some empty lines.

    You might consider deleting 605.6, and re-entering it with a formfeed
    in the correct spot. Please feel free to contact me if you have any
    troubles.

605.8Ratzenfratzin gates!SPARTY::WALSHTPU knows... RISC/Ultrix!Mon Mar 11 1991 12:2813
    Anyone very far in this game? I've been an avatar for a long time, but
    I can't get the gates of the abyss to open.

    As far as I can tell, I have all the important equipment. I'm wearing
    the ankh sword and ankh armor, I have the bell, book and candle, and I
    have all three keys. Using none of these has any effect when I go up
    to the gatekeeper. All he says is "None shall pass." (I even went so
    far as to say "Right, then!" and have at him. Killing the gatekeeper
    only loses you your avatarhood.)

    Anyone have any ideas? I've probably missed a clue somewhere, but just
    don't have the heart to retrace my steps and talk to everyone in the
    game again.

    How to open the gates of the abyss....

    Nintendo Power, February 1991

    "To enter the abyss, go to the entrance and use the bell, the book, and
    the candle. The way to Avatarhood will be open to you!"

    Don't know if this will help. But that was all it said. It also says
    that you must have all the items and know about the Virtues and
    Principles: both your knowledge and your strength will be tested.

    Good Luck!

605.10Still stuckDDIF::WALSHTPU knows... RISC/Ultrix!Wed Mar 13 1991 12:5314
    Hmmm. I think I've tried that.

    There were three separate clues, each one saying that you need to use
    one of the bell, book or candle to open the gates. I've got
    everything, I think. Unless there's some kind of gee-whiz bow that I
    don't know about - all my mage can use is a sling.

    I go to the gates of the abyss, and use the bell, book and candle. (A
    traditional magical combination.) But nothing happens. Is there a
    particular order, or a particular spot where one does this?

    I've been around and around on this one, and it's driving me nuts. Has
    anyone actually made it into the abyss?
605.11Ever play Zork?BALBOA::ADAMSThu Mar 14 1991 12:5613
    We use to play a game on the Rainbow called ZORK. There was a
    combination of a bell, book and candle that had to be used to open the
    gates of Hell. There was a definate combination that the tools had to
    be used.

    In Zork: ring the bell, light the candle, then read the
    book. In this game you stood right in front of the gate and did this.

    Perhaps this is the combination.

    I finally did finish this game and .8 was looking in the wrong

605.13Cute ending, too!DDIF::WALSHTPU knows... RISC/Ultrix!Tue Mar 26 1991 11:518
    Thanks so much for the pointer! Knowing where the abyss is, it only
    took about an hour to defeat the maze and find the final tome.

    I might have to play this again - just to see how fast it can be done
    with a shephardess, and to figure out where I got the wrong idea about
    where the abyss was.
