44.0. "TWO PLAYER GAMES??" by NHL::EDWARDS () Fri Jan 01 1988 23:44

Does anybody know of any games where two people can play against each
other at the same time ?. I know a number of 2 player games in which
the players take turns but I was looking for something ( like Tennis
or soccer ) where you play against a person rather than the computer.

    Thanks

Games like Ikari Warriors and Rush 'n Attack, let you play with
another person at the same time. But, in those games you try to
    help each other, (somtimes).

    Re .0:

I know of several games that will let two people play at the same time.
They are Mario Brothers (not Super Mario Brothers), Ice Climber, and
    Stack Up (requires robot).

Mario Brothers is probably the best of these as far as two-player
action goes. I used to play with/against friends on the arcade
version. It is flexible. Two people can play with or against each
other. When playing with each other, players can get into different
positions on the board and knock the dead monsters toward the other
player or the living monsters away. One person can occasionally help
the other by pushing them out of danger. But the game gets better when
the play against each other. A person can knock living monsters into
the other player, or can knock (by jumping from below) the other player
into monsters, or just push them. Pushing works pretty well; the
player who had a running start can push the other player across the
screen, and they have to try to get away by running or jumping.
Positioning on the screen is also important; it is good to be a little
higher, to have first shot at the monsters, but that exposes you to
attack from below. The other player can hit the floor you are standing
on, knocking you left or right. If they are good, they can run while
you are still in the air and hit the floor again when you come down.
When done properly by a good player, it is impossible to escape until
the player makes a mistake. The floor isn't even needed; when you
reach one of the gaps, the upper player will fall onto the lower
player, who gets scrunched but rebounds and can throw the upper player
    again.

Ice Climber is not as good, but two players can still compete in trying
    to climb to the top.

Stack Up is more of a children's game; players compete in jumping
around on a board of squares to light up a row or column and send a
command to the robot. The goal is to get the robot to pick up blocks
and move them to columns on your own side.

Don't forget Baseball. You directly compete against an opposing
player or against the computer. They can steal while you try to
throw them out, they bat while you pitch, etc...

Volleyball also lets you play against the computer or another player.
You can pass, block, spike and control your serves. My bother-in-law
and I have some great games. Only problem is it took me a while
to get use to controling the passes and where to position a player to
    hit the ball. Fun game.

I suggest the GOLF game. You can play head to head with another
person..... One of my favorite games. Its fun because you can see
what clubs your opponent uses and it it was the wrong club (ie..
too much hit in the water!) you can adjust your next stroke so as
not to make the same mistake.....

This game is just as frustrating as the real thing!

I just got the tennis game. I never play it in the arcade so i can't
compare it. But, this game is very good. You can play yourself against
the computer or you can play doubles against the computer with a
friend. I played doubles with my bother-in-law and we had a very
tense game. I also like playing against the computer and not my
bother-in-law, he beats me in every game we play.

I'd like to continue this note.........

I do not own a Nintendo and barely know what it's all about, but
I'm convinced that I'll buy one for the kids (and myself) for
Christmas. I'm asking for advice on what games to buy, mainly for
    the kids to enjoy.

First of all, I figure that the system including the gun with the
2 games is the best value (for $99). What I'd like to do is to
get 2-3 more games at the same time. I'd like these games to be
geared towards 5 to 8 year olds, and to be at least 2 player games.
    Any suggestions?

Also, I've read about the Advantage controller and I've briefly
looked at them. Would it be worth getting right away? Should you
get 2 of them (for the 2 player games, obviously)?

Finally, is there any educational games out there, say for ages
    5-10?

Thanks for all replies, and patience. I realize that this has probably
all been covered, but trying to take-in all this info and remembering
    it all is tough......

John, if you and your kids like sports then ICE HOCKEY is a
great two player game. Check out topic 83 for more details
on it. Unfortunately, good two player Nintendo games are
hard to find. The best games developed thus far have been
the Adventure games (ZELDA, METROID etc.), but they are for
       one player only.

As for the advantage controllers. My opinion is save your
money and try out the controllers that come with the game. You
may find out they are fine. We've had our NES unit for a year
now, and I've never been tempted to go out and buy the Advantage.
       Good luck and have fun!

Bases Loaded by Jaleco is an excellent 2 player game and plays a
mean game of baseball when it is you vs. the computer. Double Dribble
from Konami is also worth a try.

There are a few other 2 player games out that are good but I do
not know if you could consider them O.K. for the kids. They are
Contra and Life Force from Konami. This is not an all enclusive
list but they are games that I own and can vouche for their quality.

    Have fun...

44.20ANTICIPATION IS A GREAT 2 PLAYER GAMECISM::MORANWhen Money Speaks The Truth is?Tue Jan 17 1989 15:2422
A very good two player game (could actually go up to four teams
of players) which requires both spelling skills and a quick response
    is ANTICIPATION.

We got this game for X-MAS and have had great fun since. The game
has various skill levels so all ages from 7+ can play. The object
of the game is to be the first one to guess and spell an object
being drawn on he screen. However, this is also a board game and
is set up much like a three dimensional trivial pursuit board.
Each board level (3 altogether) has four colors that you must get
before moving up to the next level. You are allowed a short amount
of time to spell the word (can only mispell the word once- the second
time eliminates you from guessing a particular drawing) and the
drawing have various subjects that require you to interpret the
meaning of the drawings in relation to the subject.

A nice side benefit to the game is that it helps in spelling. There
is strategy involved as the earlier you respond to the drawing the
higher your score and once the drawing is complete then everyone
is prevented from guessing and another drawing starts. Its a great
    party game.

I'm looking for more 2 player games and this note has not been updated
for a while. Hopefully, some of you will add some 2 person (at the
same time) games that have not been mentioned.

I have Ice Hockey by Nintendo and enjoy it. My favorite 2 person
game is Joust. Perhaps some of you have played it in arcades. The
version for home use is not distributed by Nintendo but by a company
    whose name I can't recall.

The idea of the game is that you fly on birds that look like a cross
between Ostrich and Pterodactyl (sp). You change your altitude by
flapping your wings (done by pressing the A button: each press is a
flap). The idea is to knock the computer provided opponents off of
their birds. This is accomplished by bumping into them and the highest
rider will win. When playing with two people, the two people work
together for most of the game until it comes into "gladiator wave".

    I, personally give this game a "10".

Let's hear about some others. Can Techno Bowl be played with opposing
    players?

44.23Another two-player simultaneous perspectiveDELANO::WILLETTMon Apr 23 1990 20:3221
Since I have two (8 and 10 year old) sons, and an interest myself, I have been
keeping an eye out for two player games. Probably the most interesting
two-player games allow for not only one against the other, but both players to
play on the same team.

I'm sure there are more, but I have some favorites that allow for
1 vs. computer, 1 vs. 1, or 2 vs. computer

Goal! form Jaleco, Superspike V'ball from Nintendo, and
  Top Player's Tennis from Asmic.

Actually, the Nintendo Power Pak Source considers these 4-player simultaneous
games because they allow the NES Satellite option. If you can get access to this
publication (it was a supplement to a Nintendo Power distribution two or three
issues back) you will be able to see a wealth of 2-player simultaneous games,
many more than just the sports related games I mentioned above.

Good luck,

Terry

My stepson just got Double Dragon II for his B-day. He has a lot of fun
with that and Contra. Other than being two player games, I don't see
much value in either of them. DD II the players punch, kick, and beat
the enemies with lead pipes & other assorted weapons they pick up.
Contra is similar but all weapons (machine guns, fire guns, rapid fire
guns etc.) The single player quest games are much more challanging,
they make you (your kids) think, solve problems, not just fight, beat &
kill people (most enemies in these games look like people.) RENT a game
before you buy it. Most video stores rent them now.

We're borrowing Dr Mario from a neighbor and it's a great game.

Don't forget that Duck Hunt can be a 2 person game. Plug the controller
into the first outlet, the zapper into the second and choose the 1 duck
game. The arrow buttons can now control the flight of the duck while the
zapper person tries to shoot it.

Not the most complex game around, but can be entertaining, especially if the
shooter doesn't realize that you're controlling the duck.
