377.0. "SHADOWGATE" by CSSE32::KIPNES (Ken 269-2269) Sun Dec 24 1989 15:18

Does anybody have SHADOWGATE by Kemco/Seika? I got it
yesterday (along with RESCUE), and am unable to get past the
	 first few steps!

Basically, it's an adventure-type game with commands (look,
hit, open, take, etc.) You go thru a door, and see two more
doors. I can't open them because they're locked. Everything
else I try says either 'you can't do that' or, 'you seem to
	 be wasting time'.

	 Any help?

	 thanks,
	 /ken

Haven't seen Nintendo Shadowgate, but have been frustrated by its'
Mackintosh incarnation. My neighbor has it. I seem to remember a
key outside the entrance, needed to open one of the doors. Anytime
you "can't do that", go back a step and look for something to use.
But beware, some items are fatal......!

377.3A call for Spoilers!YUPPIE::SCHULTZTue Jan 02 1990 14:4237
I have been playing this for 3 days now! The last 6 hrs invested has
yielded zilch as far as new progress in the game...

This note is a call for some all out spoilers!

Here are the points I have reached...I will place them behind a LF so that
those who have yet to progress to these points have the option to bypass
    them...

I have gotten to the bridge guarded by the troll...

I have taken everything from the room with the dragon except the treasure
    chest and gold...

I have gotten the key from the skeleton in the lake, and in the ajoining
room gotten the items that were hidden behind the waterfall...I have not
found a way to remove the landslide rubble...

I have found the secret passage in the hallway and gotten to the room with the
rope...I can not get to the areas that are too high for me to reach...

As I had mentioned earlier...I am stuck...nothing I have tried has yielded
any addition clues as to what is next to do...or where I should try next.

Any help anyone out there can provide would relieve a great deal of
    fustration!

A great game...but I would not get it for kids...three college graduates
spent the better part of their holiday getting themselves in the
    seemingly dead end...

Thanks for any clues or spoilers...

Do you have the Humana spell? Have you been to the room with the
mirrors? Do you know what to do with the mirrors? Do you have the
    stones? How about the sceptre?

I'll trade the answer to any one of the above for information on how to
    reach the troll bridge. :-)

Hey! So there are some others with this game out in DECland!

    RE: .4

I have all the items that you mentioned and can lend you some
assistance with finding the troll bridge. Hopefully with this
information you can help me with my problems...

    Spoiler(s) follow...

In order to find the troll bridge, you must pass through the middle
mirror after breaking it with a hammer. You will need to get the key
from the skeleton in the lake in order to gain entrance through the
    door.

You will need two items in order to pass the flames and the monster
guarding the door across from the bridge...

    Have you done this yet???

I do not want to give away too many spoilers in 1 note so let me know if
you need more info on how to get the key and the other 2 items...

    Hope this helps!

    Re .5:

I think I have at least one of the items:

the sphere. I don't know what the other item is, but I just found a
bug in the game. When you die, you are returned to the room you were
last in before the room in which you died. If you entered the hot room
and were forced to turn back by the heat, you can then die in the
mirror room if your torch goes out. When you return to the game by
continuing, you are in the hot room.

So I can get to the troll bridge by cheating, but I'd rather do it the
right way. I haven't figured out the troll yet, but do you notice the
Humana spell causes the wind to die down there? But there's still
something missing that's needed for the spell -- I wonder what that is
and whether it will solve the troll problem.

Some of the objects I'm interested in but haven't figured out how to
use are the rope (I can't take it!), the rug, the bottles, the cloak,
    and the slime.

From reading the previous replies, it seems that noone else has

Yes. The two eyes in the dark. Each time I use the take command

	The Sphere:

377.24Complete Shadowgate Spoiler availableDECWET::BARLOWRepatriated TreehuggerMon Jan 08 1990 15:4828
Hi,

I've been enjoying reading your exploits in the Nintendo version of
Shadowgate. I played the game on the Macintosh version, and from the
questions I've seen, it sounds identical.

For those of you who are desperate, there is a Shadowgate walkthrough
(based on the Macintosh version) in:

        DECWET::Work3$:[Barlow.public]Shadowgate.txt

This just walks you through the entire puzzle. I would only recommend it
for those who are desperate. It is of the form:

        - mild hint; major hint; answer.

for most of the paper. The lines are run together, so it is almost
impossible to read the mild hint without getting a glimpse of the answer.
If you can find someone you trust to read the parts your stuck on and
slowly dole out hints, that's the best way to use this. (If you just grab
it and read it, then why bother to buy the game?)

Assuming the games are identical, here's something to work on that doesn't
really have anything to do with winning the game:

You *CAN* get by the slime.

    1. How much should I expect to pay for it?

There's an article on Shadowgate in the January/February 90 Nintendo
Power magazine. It helps you with the early part of the game. I'm stuck
at the same place many of you are. How to get by the Troll. I also have
the problem of having used up all the torches and don't know where to
get any more, hence after dying and using the continue mode I only have
    the original torch.

I have found a way to use the rickety bridge on the right in the room
of bridges. There is another exit to the right of the wraiths chamber
that shows on the move part of the screen but doesn't show on the main
screen. When you select "move" and the right entrance it says its too
high. I haven't found a way to get to it and cannot even see it. Any
    help on this one appreciated.

Based on the contents I've seen so far and hearing that there is still
an extensive part to go, I'd say this is going to be some challenge,
which is exactly what we all like. At least it doesn't have the
problems that ULTIMA gave me with the time it took to build up gold and
    to fight enemies.

    Jeff:

    Congratulations!

I've gotten to the Warlock and am stuck on how to beat him and the
monster. Keep getting zapped. How about something along the lines of a
    hint or a mild spoiler.

This is really a fun game. It challenges you to find the right articles
    to meet the challenges.

BTW, regarding the torches, I started over, picked up all the torches I
could throughout most of the game and saved them til near the end where
I'm at now. There are some places that if you let yourself die and do a
continue, you lose the articles you need to continue forward, like the
    stones for the slingshot.

I'm still trying to defeat the Warlock and the monster but to no avail.
I have tried everything in my goods and spells categories but without
success. I must be missing something I need to defeat this guy.

Info on one of the rooms follows where I need help. If you have been to
the room with the cylinder on a rope and can help read on. If you don't
want to know about it then you can stop here.

I cannot figure out the sequence of the three handles to lift the
cylinder and see whats under there. Going into the hole just causes me
to get killed by the monster guarding the room before I can fight back.
I've tried every combination of pulling the three handles but after
each combination it just says "Nothing Happened, and the handles all
return to the upward position. You can't move, break, lift or do
anything to the round container on the rope.

I believe there's something under the container I need to defeat the
Warlock. Anyone who's figured this out, I'm open to anything including
    outright spoilers on this.

Somebody mentioned about a hidden room behind the landslide but they didn't
know how to get to it. I found a document describing how to do it so I'll
describe it. Note that I'm using the Mac version. This may or may not work
for other versions. If it does have a hidden room, it should open the same
way. The hidden room is not necessary to solve the game.

You need a torch, the jar of stuff that smells horrible (that's next to the
jar of goo-gone), and the sling. Go to the landslide room. Close the jar.
Load the sling with a rock.

Save the game. Positioning the jar is the tricky part because it must be in
an exact spot to work. Behind the landslide you'll see two steps (that's what
they are if you were wondering). Each is in white with a single pixel black
border. The jar is white with a single pixel black outline. Place the jar on
top of the bottom step. The left of the jar and the left of the step should
line up. The bottom of the jar outline should be lined up above the top of
the outline of the step. Using crude ASCII graphics it should look like this:

    X X
    X X <-- jar
r X X
o XXXXX
c XXXXXXXXXXXXX
k X
s X <-- bottom step
    XXXXXXXXXXXXX

Put the jar in the proper place. Operate the torch on the jar (it will say
the jar doesn't catch on fire but ignore it). Operate the sling on the jar.
The heated jar should explode and the landslide should be pushed away. If it
doesn't work, you had the jar in the wrong place so open your saved game and
try again. I have a MacWrite document with pictures. If you need it mail me
but I think I describe it just as good here (except for the picture).

To those of you that have already done this, the author of the MacWrite
document says that the hidden room will help you a lot in solving the game.
Well, the only thing I see that could help is the bottle of black liquid.
Does anyone know what this does?

    Re: -1.
If the jar of black liquid is all you get out of the room with the
landslide then you will find that later on in the game you can collect
a similar (or perhaps the same) black liquid jar. I'm not sure what it
does either but I believe if you use it on yourself it says that it
tastes sweet. If you try to take off the cork the replay says that it
won't open. But you can use it with the use command.

Still could use some help on my previous replies.

Just bought and started this game a few days ago. So far it's been
great! Much different than anything else I've played on the NES in
   presentation and style.

Most of the discussion in this topic has generally been about the
area before the Troll Bridge. A question to those that have finished
or almost finished the game. Is there a lot more to this game other
than that area? Is it as extensive as the mags have claimed? I'm
worried that either there isn't much more to the game or it gets too
easy based on the lack of "hints needed" replies in here.

    Thanks Jeff for the input!

I have a few questions after the formfeed.

In the first section there is a room that contained the arrow on the
wall. Above the arrow is a door. Is there a way to get up to that
door? I've tried everything including the "light" bottle and nothing
   works.

In the corridor where the Wraith is, there is a passageway to the
right and up that is also seemingly unreachable. Is there a way to
   get up to that room?

Is there anything worth getting in the room with the statue of the
green snake? Again, I've tried everything (or thought I did). I
have a feeling there is, because the hint for the room is "don't
   quit now".

     No outright spoilers needed.........yet.

No hand to hand combat in this one. You try to pick the correct
item/weapon to use on the enemy and wait for the results. Not very
many battles either. I don't think it is anything like Dragon Warrior

to TAKE the shield first. I seem to recall that the only item
in their you need (except for the shield, which you need only
in the dragon room) is the hammer. But it won't hurt to pick

Earlier in this note (you could do a note dir) someone has
posted directions to a public file which walks you completely
through Shadowgate. It answers every question you could possibly

Can anyone reach the brass key from the skeleton in the lake?? Also,
in the room with the landslide and the waterfall, how do you get the
items behind the waterfall?? And, how can I move out of that screen?
There is a door to the left of the waterfall, but if I go through

there is a loose rock which contains a leather pouch, are there any

I can't help you with the landslide. I don't think there's anything to
do in the room with the loose rock except to get the pouch and leave.
Then, to leave the room with the landslide, go back the way you came
(use the square below the screen image; select the door represented by
the tiny square at the bottom of the larger square). I think the
landslide is dealt with later in the game.

To get the key, you need to get to the skeleton. You can't use a boat.
Walking on water might help. How can you walk on water?

377.94JARETH::EDPAlways mount a scratch monkey.Mon Aug 20 1990 20:4045
    Re .93:

Playing the game is primarily choosing a verb and then a noun or two.
You can move the arrow/cursor to the various verbs and nouns on the
screen or into the window where you see the room you are in.

For example, to move to another room, you put the cursor on "Move" and
press a button (I forget which, A or B). That makes the "Move" box
darken, as if it were filled in. Then you point to a doorway and press
the button again. That will cause you to move to another room -- if
    the door is open.

You can open a door by selecting "Open" and then pointing to a door,
unless the door is locked, in which case you need to "Use" a key.

Also on the screen is a list of objects you are carrying. When you are
carrying many objects, this list is a stack of cards; there are two
boxes that let you move up or down the stack of cards. When you need
to select an object, you move up or down the stack until you see the
object listed, then you select the object. The cards also list your
    spells, when you get some.

If you select "Use", you will need to indicate two objects. Select
"Use", then select the first object, such as a key on your list of
objects. Then point to something to use the key on, such as a door.

Below the main window that shows a picture of the room you are in is
another window which represents the room as seen from above. All this
smaller window has in it are doors, indicated by white squares. When
you have selected "Move", you can move by pointed either to doorways in
the main window or doorways in the small window. Since in the main
window you cannot see the doorway behind you, using the small window is
the only way to back up.

You will need to keep torches lit by using a lit torch on an unlit
torch. You can ask for hints by pressing a certain combination of
keys. (Anybody else remember? I don't. If nobody else answers, enter
another note to remind me, and I will look up the instructions at
    home.)

That should get you started; enter another note if you have any
    questions I didn't answer.

Thanks, I did finally get in during the interim... BUT and this is a BIG
BUT, HOW do I get my cloak, gauntlet, glasses to be dropped so that I can
go over the rickety stairs... I know that there is something that I need
beyond the stairs, but I can't "take" the cloak, gauntlet or glasses off
since I put them on to get beyond certain points or read certain items...

I can go into the well and get accross but I can't open the door or
whatever is there and I guess this leads to the Warlock, but I'm missing
the Staff of Ages (I think), I keep moving around and seem to have picked
up everything that I can get my hands on. I have 5 or 6 magic spells, not
sure of the count - Humana, Illumina, Terriaka(?), EPOR, the spell that
lowered the statue.... I even started the game over and got to exactly
where I was before thinking that if I didn't do any save's after the cloak
was put on that I wouldn't be wearing it, but alas, I still am...

Anyway, thanks for the tip, the crazy thing about this game is the USE
instead of LEAVE or OPEN, kind of drove me crazy for awhile...

Thanks again,

Linda

Well, now I'm really in a quandry... I've gotten to the Warlock but I can't

trying to USE everything on the "dragon" and the Warlock, also, when I was
able to open the room to get to the cavern where he is I used something on
one of the three areas on the wall (1st one) and then I used the horn and
the skull door opened, but I don't know if I made a mistake or not, the
following are all the items that I have:

Keys - 1-6 Torches - 12

sling	broom cup	testube map
sword	shield crest	billows poker
hammer	flute goldcoins bag 2
helmet	cloak(on)
flute	horn 5 magic spells: EPOR
orb	staff illumina(sp)
blade terrakka(sp)

regarding .24 - I finally read it and it says to use the staff on the
warlock, well, it doesn't seem to be working, can someone give me some
direction, maybe I've missed something, I'll check somemore in the

This is a very frustrating game, so tell your dad to get used
to the frustration and tell him to be imaginative by continuing

Clue on getting in the castle:

Have him try "touching" things outside the castle.
