238.0. "ULTIMA is the ultimate" by DEMON::FORTEN () Wed Mar 22 1989 12:45

I did a DIR/TITLE=, but it was not listed, so I guess I'll start a new
    note.

The other day my nephew got a new game called ULTIMA, for his birthday.
In one word I'd describe it as AWESOME. The graphics are good and it
has an excellent storyline to the game. It's a lot like the "LINK"
series of games and AD&D. You can register three different games (like
LINK) and save what you have.

There are five different races and professions. You can pick any four
races and have them in any type of profession you want.
    For example:

An Elf would make a great Fighter
A Dwarf would make an excellent Wizard or Cleric

There is also humans, bobbits and fuzzies. The other professions are:

    Thief
    Paladin
    Barbarian
    Lark
    Illusionist
    Druid
    Alchemist
    Ranger

Each race and profession have their own strengths and weaknesses and
paticulia armor and weapons as well as magic.

I have'nt gotten very far in the game but the object of the game is to
save the kingdom of Brittania from Exodus, an evil that is somewhere in
Sosaria. It's a pretty difficult game at the beginning but gets easier
as your characters gain experiance and wisdom.

If anyone else has played the game let's see what you've learned. On a
    scale of 1 - 10 this is a definate 9.5.

For those who don't know about Ultima-like games:

o	Ultima is not like any previous Nintendo game. It is sort
of like Adventure of Link in goals, but the means by which
those goals are achieved is different.

o	Ultima is based on one of the series of Ultima games for
computers, Ultima III I think. Early computer games did
not have much in the way of graphics, which has a lot to
do with the style of the game.

o	You don't control the fighting directly. That is, you don't
use the control pad to do the hacking and throwing yourself.
Your players and the enemies take turns. On each turn, your
player can move a square, use a weapon in a given direction,
cast a spell, or use a tool.

o	There are cities and dungeons. In cities, you trade and
gather information. In dungeons, you gain experience while
killing monsters and looking for treasure.

o	The important difference between Ultima and other cartridges
is that Ultima is a game in the sense of sets of actions
with rules, while other cartridges are not games so much
    	as activities of sport.

You may notice odd changes on the screen while you move around cities.
This is because the areas that you cannot see are blacked out. E.g.,
everything on the opposite side of a wall from you is black. When you
go around to that side of the wall, you'll be able to see what is
there, but the original side will be black.

I purchased this game last Thursday night (23-MAR)...at Kay Bee
Toys in the Auburn mall (Auburn, MA). They had ten or so left at
$54.95 each, a little steep but well worth the money. This is an
excellent game...even if I haven't gotten very far yet!!!

There are five Ultima games for computers, numbered I through V and
also with names. I think the Nintendo Ultima is III. Nintendo Exodus
might be IV (or perhaps even III; magazines are not always accurate).
In any case, Exodus has never been mentioned in Nintendo Power. If it
is a sequel to Ultima, it is probably a good way off.

Can I get the CPM version of these games -Ultima I-V - for my computer?
And where would I get them? An address and/or phone number if you
    have it would be great.

The magazine that I saw the review for Ultima Exodus in is called
Electronic Gaming Monthly which covers games for Nintendo, Sega and
    Atari.

I have both the Nintendo "Ultima" and "Ultima V" (for my IBM clone).
Both are good games although I prefer the Nintendo version for the
most part. I believe the current NES "Ultima" is the game you are
looking for (a few replies ago). When you turn the game on it goes
through the credits...then the screen you start from reads, "ULTIMA
EXODUS". The name on the box and the cartridge is just "Ultima".
I have made quite a bit of headway in this game and would enjoy
talking to someone else who's playing it...I still have a very long
    way to go!!!

You can find Ultima games in most software stores, although they may be
out of stock on older versions. The publisher is Origin Systems in
Manchester, New Hampshire. Actually, they moved a few thousand feet
and are now in Londonderry. I think they are on Harvey Road; the phone
company can give you an address.

Having just talked with Nintendo Customer Service I was told that
Ultima for the NES is the same as the Ultima games that are for the
Commadore all rolled into one game. So, I was just looking for the
incorrect game title. But it's still hard to find this. Nintendo
also told me that as soon as Ultima took off popularity wise Nintendo
Power would do a feature with maps and hints in it. The reason that it
hasn't taken off, I was told was probably that everyone was still
    playing Link!!

Thanks for all the help and to all who answered my questions,
and for not making me feel any dumber than I already feel...

just purchased the game (for $49, pretty steep), and would welcome
some spoilers. The instruction book is rather intimidating.

I'm playing Ultima and think its great so far. I can bring my
characters all to skill level 5 and survive above ground for a long
time, however I'm not sure which of the caves to search out first as
all my attempts below ground have ended badly. I am using 2 rangers
a cleric and a wizzard. What are you using for characters?? I have
managed an interesting boat ride and a warp (kind of)so far but
both of these ended in death , I must not have been ready for where
I went. This is not a spoiler as talking to a common non player
character will yield this info...so... you must talk to the king
more than once during the game to get your characters started in
    the right direction.

I	hope this helps someone .

Though this game seems steeply priced (I paid $54 for mine) I found
it was worth the bucks. Not many games hold my interest for a long
time. I gave up on LINK II after a few days. I think is has someting
to do with "structure". I found ULTIMA a pretty structured, logical
game which fit my style of play. It has bee mention in the LEGACY
OF THE WIZZARD note how unstructured that game is and I agree.
I started the game several times then gave up to let my son do it.
He loves LEGACY but gave up on ULTIMA. I guess it's not "like father
    like son".

Now if you want me to explain how magic and wizzardry can be structured
I haven't the fondest clue. It's just how I see it.

A weekend rental of this game might give you a fair idea if you'd
like it but I don't believe an overnight rental would give you enough
play time to fairly evaluate it.

So what's the deal on Ultima? I've got my characters raised to levels
    12, 7, 6, and 6. This isn't a great help -- all the monsters in the
overworld get harder, thus cancelling out my increased power if not
    actually making things more difficult.

I haven't found anything yet that increases my magic or willpower.
Fighting monsters is tedious and there's not much money to gain.
Perhaps I spent too much time building up my levels before I started
exploring. I'm looking around now to see if there's anything more
interesting to find in the caves.

ULTIMA is a very frustrating and extrememly time-consuming game.
You must chose your characters wisely in the beginning. Wisdom and
intelligence are highly valued. You should know that the maximum
power levels for the characters is 25, so you have a bit to go.
Do go searching in the "overworld" as much as you can and do write
down the clues the townspeople give you (at least the ones that
are even remotely helpful). I found that some of the clues were
forgotten until I actually got to the point where it was useful.

    	Good luck.

Strategy for accumulating points and dollars:

Don't visit the King. That way, your characters remain at level one
and you continue to encounter monsters which can be defeated with Repel
or Undead. You can explore a lot this way as long as you do not go
down in the caves. (You can take a peek at their first levels.)

Eventually, you'll need a ship. You might want to hold off until you
have 20,000 pieces of gold. FCI tells me you need 5,000 per character
to raise their skills (at the right places). Unfortunately, I don't
know if that is per level or total.

238.28The price of POWERDIXIE1::WITMANMickey Mouse FOREVERFri Aug 11 1989 12:099
I don't know what FCI is referring to when they say 5000 GP's are
needed to increase your powers because you'll find that it takes
100 GP's to increase 1 point in strength, dexterity, wisdom or
intelligence. Keep in mind that it is not a 1-to-1 ratio of
increasing your MMP (Maximum Magic Power) with some characters.

I'll provide hints to interested parties either here or via mail.

I have been to EXODUS and SURVIVED.

    Re .28:

Well then 5000 gold pieces would increase a skill by 50 points, so I
think the counselor must have been indicating the total needed to bring
your character to the maximums in some categories.

Last night, I built up 10,000 gold for my party. I'll do another
10,000 tonight and then go to Ambrosia.

By the way, do you know how the character attributes work? The
instruction book lists numbers for the various races, but it doesn't
say what those numbers are. Are they the maximums the skills can be
    raised to?

    				-- edp
238.30Confirming skill levelsDIXIE1::WITMANMickey Mouse FOREVERSun Aug 13 1989 03:099
Yes, on the maximum skill levels.

I would make the same assumption about the game counslers info.
I.E when your setting up a character the most of anyone skill you
can give is 25 and 50 more would be the max. for several characters.
Except for WIZZARDS and CLERICS. ( I like DEATH and DESTROY magic
    power).

    Good journey.

	Greetings, all -
I just started playing ULTIMA and have a few questions...

	1. When you find the gold pick, who can use it and where? Is
it only useful in getting the armor? Is the place to 'dig'
where the little girl says "Dig here""Dig here"?

	 2. I am curious as to what other people have used for their
'party members' and who/what was successful/good idea to
	     have along in the party.

	3. Just about anything that has to do with starting the game. I
should say how/where you begin in this game. Do what first, go
where first, etc. and so on...

My strategy so far has been not to talk to the King and not to touch
the Mark of the Kings. Doing those causes worse monsters to appear. By
avoiding them and keeping my characters at level one or two, I've
accumulated more than 2500 experience points for each of them, over
5000 for one character. Yet I've built up my magic power and acquired
the Mark of Force and Mark of Fire. I'm also saving up cash to buy
more strength and dexterity. (The game is a definite pain in the
amount of work it makes you do to acquire enough cash.)

I'm planning to go on this way as long as possible. When I'm ready,
all I have to do is touch the Mark of the Kings and talk to the King,
and all my characters will be raised to level 25.

However, there are some things I'm wondering about. I don't know what
the Time Lord is referring to -- caves, places, destinations of moon
gates, what? How do you give money to the guards on the island? Where
is the Mark of the Snake? Do I need anything besides that and the
silver horn to win the game? If so, where do I get them?

By the way, my strategy for caves is to buy a lot of gems and powder,
use magic to descend to level 8 without moving horizontally at all, use
the gems on level 8 to see where I am, and then either move to
interesting places carefully or use Ascend and Descend to change my
location. (Ascend and Descend accomplishes the same effect as Trans.)

I haven't found any characters that couldn't use the gold pick.
It's only use I've found is to get the mystic armour. It can be
passed from character to character so all can get the armour (hope
that doesn't constitute a spoiler). I didn't tell you where to
get it. I'll try to think of a good clue for the location.

I solve this with a Cleric, Wizard, Lark and Ranger. I had only
made those characters because I like their looks and skills but
really didn't know what I was doing. I believe you can solve this
adventure with any set of characters but will have to employ different
    strategies depending on their abilities.

    DREAM TEAM

Based on my style of play, I've put together a *dream team* of a
Fuzzy Wizard, Bobbit Cleric, Dwarf Cleric, and Elf Wizard.

As a said in a prior not *death* and *destroy* are awesome weapons.

Basic starting senerios I use are kill a few enemies and stock up
on food so you don't have to worry about it latter. Explore the
caves to get the needed treasures (Marks,Money,Tools).

    reply to .32

The *Moon Gates* transport you to some difficult to reach points
in the game. They open up like black whirlpools in the ground
according to the waxing and the waning of the moon.

Giving money to dishonest guards is not really difficult but there
is a law against it. I think it's called *Bribe*ry

The mark of the snake is in the cave of moon but you'll need more
    than that to win.

It's me again - my next question is, how do you acquire the different
magic spells like ascend, descend, tras.?

Do you have to be a certain character before these become available to
you? When I asked about who can use the gold pick, I did so because
once I got the gold pick and I had selected that tool to use, I got
the message "Can't use it." Is this because the place I was trying to
dig in was incorrect or what????

Also, is it possible to fight and WIN the guards - the ones who catch you
when you you steal from the guild shop? Is THIEF the best guy to do the
stealing? I guess what I mean is, who is the sneakiest and able to get away

To get the advanced spells, you need a character with either clerical
magic or wizardry, and you need to accumulate a lot of cash and visit
one or more of the shrines. You can do this with a character that has
both clerical magic and wizardry, but that requires more cash and
prevents you from reaching some of the highest spells.

You can beat the guards, but there's not much point to it. I took on
the King once; I think he may be unbeatable. 600 hit points didn't
    phase him.

The magic spells a character can acquire vary by the characters
profession. You increase a characters MMP (Maximum Magic Power)
by donating GP's at the *SHRINES*.

I'll have to check the "can't use it". I believe your correct in
that the item you were trying to find wasn't there.

Beating the guards is both possible and profitable (15 experience
points per guard) but you better be very experienced or have much
    magic, a blowgun helps, also.

I didn't find much use in stealing. I'd rather destroy for my GP's.
The only thing you really need to steal from the shops is the pick.

I tried to kill the king without success. I had characters that
had 2550 MHP's, strength at 99 and blowguns. The king wore me down
until I just hit reset and gave up.

i can see your point that killing the guards is fruitless but if
you steal you'd better be prepared to do battle with them. There
seems to be easier ways to get GP's than stealing.

To anybody: I'm looking for outright, total spoilers.

I played Dragon Warrior a little yesterday and have decided I want to
get Ultima over with so I can go on to better games (Golvellius, King's
Quest, and Penguin Land on the Sega, and Dragon Warrior on the
    Nintendo).

So for Ultima, I just want to know what to do. I've raised the
strength of three of my characters to the maximum and raised the magic
of all of them a lot, and they all have enough experience points to
bring them to the maximum level. I've got the marks of Fire and Force
and the flower. Can I just waltz into the Cave of Sol and get the Mark
    of the Snake?

Where do I get the pick or the mystic sword? What do I need from the
Cave of Moon or the Cave of Death? How do I get the command needed to
    bribe the guards?

(Reasons I like Dragon Warrior better than Ultima: It's bigger and
more varied, they don't make you work endlessly at the same tasks to
earn points, all your abilities go up with your level, and it is more
interesting to explore. Naturally, you do have to do some work to
raise your level, but it pays off immediately in increased abilities,
which also lets you go a bit further to explore new territory. Also,
the fighting does use the same hit/be-hit scheme that Ultima uses, but
it doesn't go into the fight scene the way Ultima does, and the fights
aren't long and drawn out as in Ultima. You spend more time looking
around instead of fighting repeatedly. In Ultima, I had a complete map
very quickly, and most of what I've done since then is build up my
points and check the map locations for items.)

You only need one Mark of the Kings (it can be gotten separately for
each player at one location), and it can be found in several places,
the easiest of which is on the first level of the cave northeast of the
    royal city.

I'm not sure about exactly how the levels affect the enemies that
appear, including the pirates, but one character at level five with the
Mark of the Kings might be enough. I very much recommend keeping your
characters at level one or two until you have earned a great deal of
money. If you do not advance your levels, you can keep fighting the
easy monsters. The more advanced monsters are just pains without being
worth all that much more in points and nothing more in gold.

I don't know exactly when the ship appears. Also, the way I played the
game, I used some characters for a while, captured the ship, and had
explored a bit. Then I decided I wanted different characters, so I
created new ones and formed a new party. The resulting party had all
low-level characters, so I got the easy monsters, but my captured ship
    was still available for use.

The King raises your level as high as five if you have enough
experience points, or to levels beyond five if you have points and the
Mark of the Kings. I would expect pirate ships to appear by the time
you reach level five and have the Mark of the Kings.

The Marks of Fire and Force can be found:

on level 8 of the Cave of Fire, among other places. They are in
different parts of that level, so you'll need to move around with Move
or go up and down in different places.

You dig on one of the islands -- a two block island east of the city of
    Fawn.

    Re .49, .50:

Killing the more difficult monsters while on level one is difficult.
Basically, you need great magic. When I did the caves, I avoided most
monsters by traveling as quickly as possible to level 8, looking around
    with gems, and getting out.

To get magic, you need a lot of gold (100 pieces per hit point, so 5000
or more pieces to get the best spells) and you need the boat. I don't
think you can get the boat with only level one characters. I got it
because I played with some characters, advanced their levels, got the
boat, and then created new characters to form a new party. The new
characters were at level one but they still had the boat.

I think you need the boat before you can get to Fawn.

When you use magic or gems to get a map of the caves, traps appear as
question marks on the map, but so do treasures and other things you
    want.

I suggest that you at least visit the kind (without any marks) to
get up to level 5. You'll run into some of the larger monsters on
the surface after that, but at least you'll have 550 instead of
150 hit points! Also, the guild shop has some things of use (other
than gems) for the large monsters. Not only will these save you
from being beat up upon by the larger monsters, you can save your
cleric magic for getting treasures much more safely!

Only use the cleric command OPEN rather than the usual open command

Well, I guess it really depends upon your philosophical approach
to conquering this game. First of all, it would seem to be easier
to steal gold from treasure chests even though you "get caught".
There are several areas on the game board where you will find a
lot of treasure chests. Getting gold there seems to me to be easier
than fighting a lot of creatures and getting only a little at a
    time.

Related to this is the fact that in order to get to those areas
in which there are a lot of treasure chests, you do have to be at
higher levels. While it is true that more difficult monsters appear
at higher levels, you are missing out on some of the crucial experience
you will need later on to solve/win this game. Please note that
the maximum level for a character is 25.

The next related point is that getting to Ambrosia is absolutely
critical. You will have to go there many times in order to do all
that you have to do before you can even think of entering Exodus.
Not only does this mean that you will have to raise your experience
level, it also means that yopu will have to do extensive exploring,
talking to townspeople, and experimenting. Many of the things you
have to do are logical in themselves. Some are only logical after
you talk to townspeople, but remember some townspeople lie.

Pay attention to your screens and try to remember what happens,
when and where it happens and what to do to recover. Don't be afraid!!!

You can only have 9,999 gold points at one time. Believe me you
will need to get much more than that to win this game.

If you need some specific pointers, send me mail and I'll be happy
    to answer.

Oh, yeah, using certain caves is almost essential to letting you
proceed smoothly through to the end game. By familiarizing yourself
with these caves, you can avoid using magic, re-build your strength,
    and get rich.

To all of you out there, enjoy exploring!!!!

I'll give just a few general comments:

The level strengths of your party members are not high enough yet.Keep
    building them up.

Nothing works in Exodus except your fighting ability and magic.

    GOLD, GOLD, GOLD!!!!

Visit Ambrosia frequently, but pay (pun) attention to how you spend
    your money.

Do you have the Mystic Sword and the Mystic Armor?

Don't despair--beating them final dragons (there are a heck of a
lot more than 2) is relatively easy once you figure out how to best
use what you have in your arsenal.

I'd go to Ambrosia and raise the levels of your characters. Of course,
you can't raise them all - you'll need many, many etc. more gold
pieces to do that. Be sure to get the flower in Ambrosia - and give
them to Sherry in the Royal City - she'll give you something that's
really good to have. And you can go back and get this flower (for
each member of your party) as often as needed) There's more to
going to Ambrosia than just raising your levels, so think about
the clues the townspeople told you...

Now, I have a question - when I was in Ambrosia I went to the Shrine of
Dexterity (sp?) and couldn't find a priest!! Shouldn't there be one
here? I need something from this shrine as well as making Cleric more
dexterious (sp?). Was this just a fluke, or is this something that
     I need to solve?

This game is great. Only problem is, there aren't enough hours in the
day/night for me to play this game and still get a decent nights sleep.
Oh well, Zelda and Link were just as addicting and I managed to survive...

I found the Holy men, one asked if i wanted to meditate or revive a

Now I did just about everything I could think of but, alas, no success.
How does one meditate with the holy man? How can I pray without the PRAY

Welcome to one of the best (IMO) games so far, it is frustrating at times
however. To answer your question, YES there are places (fountains) that will
replenish your hit points. Caution thou, there are some that will take away
hit points. If you have a "cleric" or "wizard" as a member of your party
they will have "heal" power/magic which selectively restore hit points to
any member of the party. Also, if you accumulate enough GPs you can buy
"tents" at a guild shop which restores hit points to all members of the
party.

    Best characters:

I find it very handy to have

    a) lots of clerical magic. Used to heal damaged people and to open
    treasure chests painlessly.
    b) projectile weapons.
    c) at least one "tank" to keep the unarmored mages and projectile slingers
from going hand to hand with nasty monsters
    d) a mage who can be upgraded to maximum magic points.

    So, I'm currently running:

An elf fighter. This is my "tank". He gets the heaviest armor I can
afford (or find), and the biggest hand-to-hand weapon.

A fuzzy mage. After this guy is upgraded to maximum dex and maximum
magic points, he's hell on wheels. Don't get in his way, unless you're
    a couple of dragons.

A bobbit cleric. Maximum healing power, and lots of treasure-chest
    opening capability.

A bobbit paladin. Supplies supplemental healing power, opens chests,
and also can handle any weapon, so she stands back and bangs opponents
at range with the heaviest projectile weapon I can buy.

I considered but rejected getting a thief. Basically, they offer
projectile power, but no magic. Supposedly they can open chests
without damage - but my limited experience with a member of this
profession did not bear out this theory. So I trashed the character
and took the paladin. She opens chests nicely using magic, she can
wear armor, she helps heal people who would otherwise wait for poison
to kill them, and she can use projectile weapons - although the low dex
    potential is a definite disadvantage.

One of the hints I have read regarding this game suggested seeing
the King only after the experience point level has reached 500. Does
this apply for only one member of your party or all 4 members? In
other words, should I wait for all 4 members to get their experience
points up to 500? Will both HP and MP increase when I do this? I
know that the enemies will get stronger after I see the King.

This is a very involving game. Plenty of variables to keep you
thinking and planning ahead. So far I like it! I think the doctor
charges too much for his cures though. Hmmm. Just like in real life.

The recommendation should apply to all members of the *CURRENT* team.
The reasoning is that as the experience level goes up the difficulty of

much easier opponents and increase your GP's much easier.

You can't get it without damage! it costs 50 whatevers for each member that
obtains it. This is true for each of the four marks. You can check to see

I have been 'working' on ULTIMA for a little over a week and just went
through this topic today. I have a number of suggestions to new players,
some of them have been confirmed by other notes in this topic. For those
that want no help what-so-ever I will throw in a <FF> before the discussion
but if you didn't want any help, what'ch doing reading this in the first
    place?

The one item that was not clear from the instruction book was how to
get to the second command screen. I think Left/Right on the pad would have
been much more logical than SELECT, but I only play the game. In general,
go poking buttons until you find out what works where.

First, you have space for 20 characters in each 'file'. USE THEM. I
even when to far as creating a set of characters I call the Swiss accounts.
They are characters with digits for names. I used human rangers with
S=0, D=10, I=20, W=20. None of them are ever going to talk to the king.
Their job is to collect money and provide a monotonous repetitive activity
to take my mind off other problems. They only have had one battle above
ground where any of them took any hits at all! Very boring but very
    profitable.

They also make wonderful repositories for supplies like powders and
gems and tents and everything else you want to have on hand. If you have
a dead'un you are about to discard, let the Swiss strip him/her first.
(That reminds me - a corpse is a good place to stash supplies. I haven't run
into any limit on supplies yet, but there probably is one.) It is
inconvenient having to transfer one torch or whatever at a time, but that is
just about the same as transferring the money, going to the shops and buying
one item at a time. Transfers involve getting a party together containing
the character making the deposit or withdrawal and the appropriate account.
Once the party is formed and activated, do the transfers right there in the
    inn and save the results.

If you want to get real low, create a character, strip him/her and
discard the hulk. You could even feed the Swiss this way if you keep them
starved enough. I think it is easier to get rich by wandering around and
casting a few spells. Think of it as army patrols or police walking a beat.

Notes on previous notes -

You don't need the king mark to get a ship. A single 5th level
character is enough to attract pirates. It may be that they will show up
for lower levels than that; I didn't keep that close track.

Dishonest guards -

The brown guards are honest. They disappear when you pay them to. The
blue guards are less honest. They will accept your gratuity with thanks
    and do nothing.

Fights -

The further off you can kill an enemy, the better - buy and use a
blowgun. Magic is also very useful at low levels. A limited multi-magic
character like a ranger, is better than a full function single magic
character like a wizard at low levels. If you get into a fight where the
characters inherent magic is not enough, like a fight with the guards or
below ground, it helps if you have a generous supply of powder. It is
    hardly chivalrous, but it works!

Dexterity -

I have not played with enough different characters yet, but dexterity
may have an impact on how often you miss, either in magic or in a fight.

Maps -

Trying to get the game to hold still long enough to draw an accurate
map is well nigh impossible. If you have a VCR, record the game and go
back over the tape after the session. You will get much better results
    for much less aggravation.

238.122another strategyESPN::BLAISDELLspeechlessThu Jan 11 1990 14:4949
What is good about this game is that there are numerous strategies
that are available to move ahead in the game. I'll put mine behind
the formfeed as it is very different from .120's .

I have used just one party which consists of 2 Dwarf Rangers
that occupy the first two positions, a Fuzzy Wizard, and bringing
up the rear, a Dwarf Paladin. With this combination I have two
strong characters for battle on the front lines which I can arm
to the teeth and coat with the strongest armour. The Rangers also
have both cleric and wizard spells. The Wizard provides me with
all the nice spells I need to navigate the caves and the Paladin
is not only strong in battle but can open all the treasure chests
without worrying about the booby traps. Nobody gets poisoned or
damaged and the character gathering the money is in the rear where
there is little fear of enemies robbing her.

I also use the save feature extensively. If I tire of fighting
the battles to gather gold, I'll save my position, and send my
party out to investigate new things like caves, Ambrosia, or test
out the new enemies. I don't worry about the characters perishing
with these forays, since I'll reset anyway and go back to where
the game was saved. The advantage with this strategy is, that I
can find out what I'll need for weapons, tools etc. in order to
proceed to the next stage without losing anything or anybody.
Reviving a dead party member can be expensive and I want to keep
the gold gathering fights to a minimum.

I've only been playing for a week and have been able to get the
Mark of Fire and powered all characters to level 5. I noticed that
some of the weaker enemies can still be found for some easy gold
gathering and with the hit points jacked up to 550 for all characters,
even the tougher enemies can be be beaten. The Paladin also has the
heal spell which I use quite a bit. There may be a point in time
where I'll have to use a different character but until then, I'm
going to stick to my original four.

Some of the complaints I have about the game are concerning the
fights. There is no way to switch weapons during a battle. The gold
rewarded after a fight is purely random. I feel the gold value should
somehow be related to the number of enemies and strength of the enemies
you defeat, like Dragon Warrior does. And you can't run away from
a fight like you can in Dragon Warrior. But overall, Ultima is a great
    game and I'm enjoying it.

Re .122:

I have not used the entire strategy I outlined yet, but what I have
    used has been very successful.

I enjoy finding the effects of the character system almost as much fun
    as actually running the characters.

I only use two parties so far. The first consists of two rangers, a
wizard and a paladin. The second party is all rangers and form the Swiss
account. They have collected a very impressive number of experience points.
Two are well over 7000, has the mark of the king but is still 1st level.
The mark of the king is only useful/effective if you are going to talk to
    the king.

A further refinement - If you bring in a new character, send him/her
out with the foraging party and let him/her do most of the killing. This
boosts his/her experience points quickly to the point where he/she can
    safely join the main party.

When building a new character, don't be afraid to leave some of the
attributes at zero, but make sure that any disbursements are effective.
For example, you could build a ranger S=0, D=0, I=25, W=25 but that only
gives you 12 MMP. You get new spells at 10 and 15 MP so the extra 2 MP
is wasted until you can buy more I & W. That leaves 10 points to spread
between S & D. I stuck them in D to see if it reduced the MISSED rate but
they might have been more effective in S where they increase the damage in
hand to hand combat. Since I avoid close order combat as much as possible,
I haven't noticed the effect very much.

I've played Bards Tale III and would say the similarities are generic.
I.E. Classes of characters that use *POWERS* to defeat enemies. Ultima
seems easier to play. Bards Tale is more complex. I finished Ultima
(after a couple months of play), I quit playing Bards Tale after one

My *GAME* philosophy is that games have to be challenging enough to
hold your interest, difficult enough to make you keep *trying* but not
    so difficult that you *give-up*.

When I get my ULTIMA cartriage back (it's been on lone to a friend of

Have been playing this game for a few weeks now and am almost done,
and have to say it is a good one. Dragon Warrior did a few things
better, especially with the experience levels/points and fight scenes,
but Ultima has a lot of nice surprises and touches that have kept me
interested. The 3D dungeon scenes were a change of pace, the destroy and
death spells are fun, and keeping up with all the attributes of the 4
characters in your party is a challenge. I started out with 4 characters
and have only had to replace one of them so far.

I'd rate it a solid 8.5-9.0 with Legend of Zelda again being the
one to match at a 10.

Mild gold gathering hint behind the <ff>

There have been some complaints about the building up of gold being
tedious and time-consuming. Well, once you reach level 5 and are able
to go for a boat ride, getting "rich" isn't that hard to do and is
reasonably quick. There exists a cache of treasure chests in one of
the towns, that if you have a character that has the "open" spell,
you can get 1500-2000 gold each and every time. Make sure at least one
of your party has the compass heart to get you back to the King's castle
in case you get in a fight scene with the guards. I mix this technique
with fighting enemies and trips to Ambrosia so the game doesn't get too
tedious. Don't hang out at level 1 for too long, getting gold
by battling Orcs,Goblins,Skeletons and Ghouls ! The game will bore
you to tears. Be adventurous and Ultima will reward you.

money, less so if not). question is how do I get
back from there (never seen a moon gate or a whirlpool)
I usually have the same problem with the moon gates,
I go through but I don't return. Maybe I don't live
long enough for the moons to get to the correct
phase again?

One thing, where/what is ambrosia? Probably a
city/town but I don't remember one by that name,
Also I haven't run into Devil Guard though
allegedly this is where the information about
bribing comes from. I have opened a door near
the king (and come to think of it I don't
now the name of that, though it's neighbor is
the Royal City)and found a gypsy. I've been wandering
about, have a ship and have been trying to get the mark of
Kings (had it once, but was to weak and out of magic
and got clobbered on the way out, now I can't find
the thing again (wasn't mapping that time, it was early
in the game and pure dumb luck)). It is an interesting
game, but I just don't have the pure time it takes of
late so I haven't used it much since christmas.

    ...

Start in West Montor (you know where that is, right? JIC it's SSW of

Congrats! I might be able to help on Legacy.

I could use some technical help, no spoilers needed.

Every other adventure/rpg game I have played provided a method
of renewing hit points. I haven't figured out how to do this.
(I don't have an instruction book, bought the game used)
I just started last night, and have already died several times,
    which is discouraging.

Is there a way to renew hit points when they get low?

238.157Restoring HPsMFGMEM::BENOITMon Jun 18 1990 14:2223

There are 4 different ways to renew hit points after the form-feed.

    1) Just walking around (as long as no one is poisoned AND you have
food) will restore hit points very slowly.

    2) If you have someone in your party with cleric magic, the spell HEAL
will restore a random amount of hit points one player at a time.
You use HEAL, walk around some more to restore MP then HEAL again.

    3) Tents can be purchased at the guild shops for 100 GPs. I believe
these will restore 100 HPs for each player.

    4) The best way to renew HPs that I found was to find a "delicious"
fountain in the caves. Fountain spoiler follows form-feed.

The easiest-to-reach delicious fountain is in the cave of Death (N of
LB Castle), 3rd level, SE corner. Caves are difficult though. Arm
    yourself before entering.

    Hope this helps you!

I've been following the advice or earlier notes about getting
a group for the sole purpose of collecting gold, and then transferring
the gold to your main party. It is excellent advice!

My own opinion on the makeup of the party you use is: get two
wizards and two clerics. If you keep the party at level one,
the only monsters you will meet are monsters that can be
defeated by either repel or undead magic. I pick up thousands
of gold pieces in a farily short time this way. I also use
the party to perform chores that require cross-country travel,
including buy items from the guild shops.

    It works great for me!

    [spoiler question]

I found my instruction book. The book lists spells (magic and
willpower systems) that I do not have. I have a cleric and
a wizard in my party (both chosen by the race most efficient
for those occupations) and have raised their intelligence and
their wisdom levels to the max.

I still don't have the maximum spells, though, and I'm wondering
what you need to do to get those killer spells. Do you have to
raise strenght and/or dexterity as well? Or find some item?

I'm at level 25 with all characters, compass heart, silver horn.
Would appreciate advice on how to get the toughest spells.

I remembered that

	- there were clues about it being near a shop, buried by a tree
	- I found it in something like an alleyway between two buildings

My brother cannot find the town, and has me wondering if I am confusing hints

ULTIMA "Runes of virue" for the GAMEBOY is great !

The graphics are like ULTIMA V (Birdseye 2D with smoooth scrolling).
You must find 8 runes to defeat the black knight who has stolen them.
He has hide them in 8 dungeons which has a lot of monsters, skeletons
    and other nice features :-)
In the dungeons you can find better weapons, armors, gold, food or
potions to build up your "equipment".
In "Britannia" ;-) are a lot of shops where you can buy the same
things. But you can't buy magic armors or magic weapons :-)
Many persons give you tips where you can find better weapons or
which way the best to find the rune (in the dungeon).
Your party is only one person but to the beginning of the game you
can selected between four persons with different qualitys.

The game s a 1meg game with battery backup. That mean you can switch
off your GAMEBOY where ever you want. If you turn on your GAMEBOY
you are at the same place where you switched off you machine.
You don't need the SAVE-Button or something else..

This game is very fun to play! It carries the flavor of other
    Ultimas ver well.

So far I have found three runes, the fireball wnad, and the fife.

What is your best magic item?

    Paul

    Hi Paul !
My favourit magic (at this time) is the "Lightning Amulet".
It kills the "Black Knight" in front of the dungeon "Pride".

Now i have 7 runes and another problem :
I can't reach the "Isle of Avatar". One person said, the entrance
is "beneath the sea". A tunnel would lead to the island.
But I don't find any entrance. Now i am back in the dungeon
PRIDE to find the magic sword.
Maybe i need this weapon to go to the isle.

If not, who has a hint for me...

I'm ready to tackle exodus (I think) except for one minor problem. I
haven't got the cards. Where are they? I thought I have been everywhere
but I must be missing something.

Looking for some help in locating the following:

Circle of Light to get the pray command

Where exactly DAWN is? ive tried with the instructions in previous
notes, but to no avail... I find a Swirl that appears south east of
LB's castle when it is a full moon, but all it does continually
is bring you back to that exact spot..it does not transfer you to
    anywhere?
if I go south from LB castle and then west to the mountain range
i find no swirl to transport to Dawn?

any help would be appreciated it...

You're in the right area. There is no moon gate (swirl) to transport
you. After you go wet to the mountains, go due north 3 or for spaces
and it just appears when both moons are full.
