670.0. "Star Trek" by SDSVAX::SWEENEY (SOAPBOX: more thought, more talk) Mon Sep 30 1991 11:28

    Star Trek was reviewed in Nintendo Power. It has first series
    characters.

    Does anyone know what the typical time lag is between the appearance in
    NP and availability in stores?

    It is a role playing game. Didn't have much time to play with it
    but I enjoyed the time I spent with it.

    Re .6:

    It's okay so far. Not great, but kind of interesting -- there are a
    lot of things from different television episodes thrown into the game.
    This is an adventure game. The player beams down to a planet, figures
    out where to go, who to talk to, what things to use where, and beams up
    to set course to another planet. Tasks on the planets have involved
    blasting through doors, entering a code in an alien computer, finding
    the parts to fix an alien computer, dealing with Harcourt Mudd, getting
    out of a Romulan jail, et cetera.

    I would recommend it, except the prices today are so steep.

670.8My opinionSPACC::MARKEYRetreat, Retrench, Lower ExpectationsMon Mar 30 1992 17:4819
I would have to say that I was disappointed with this game (and I am a big
Trek fan). I rented this for a couple days and got to the last mission.
The story was kind of fun, but there were too many things that were a pain.
It seems like you hardly ever got enough information to beam down with the
right party - always had to beam back up to get the right personnel. And
since you always beamed back to the same spot, there was a lot of wasted time.
I also had problems with the saves of the game. When I saved in the middle of
some missions and come back later, certain things would be reset and others
wouldn't (like needing credits to get into the bar when you already used them
before you saved). I ended up going back to saves at the beginning of missions.
I also thought that the ship battles were a bit of a pain.

Now some of these problems could have been due to the fact that (like most
rentals) it didn't come with the instructions. But based on my experiences
with most Ninetendo games, the instructions wouldn't have mattered that much.
Overall, while I am a Trek fan, I didn't classify this as a keeper. Maybe the
IBM version is better.

670.9The tribble with this game is...SCARGO::LEMIREWed Apr 08 1992 13:2213
    I rented this last night, and so far I like it, but I am having a
    little trouble. ( or is that tribble ).
    I am still in the first mission, trying to find the dilithium.
    I have spoken to the medicine man, found the ring in the swamp, and
    have made it to the large structure to the north. My problem is
    the door that only one can pass through. How the hell do you get past
    it. Does the symbols representing a code have anything to do with it,
    or do you just have to go for it and take a couple of hits?

    Re .9:

    Yes, the symbols have something to do with it:

    Write down the symbols as you see them. Use them later on.

    You must walk across the symbols in the same order as you passed them
    on the way in.

670.11Who said Romulans were evil?SCARGO::LEMIREThu Apr 09 1992 13:0813
    Thanks for the tip. I made it. Now I'm stuck again. I'm on Phalon,
    and i know I'm supposed to fight Gorn, but how? I have the remote, and
    the credits and booze, but I had to give them to the ugly dude standing
    in front of the door.
    BTW I have to agree with the first review of this game. Alot of it
    is repeditive (sp) and a pain in the neck. I did make it through
    Romulan space without incedent. I was looking forward to a battle, but
    they even escorted me to Phalon. That was very nice of them!

    Thanks again for the help.

670.13The vid store will never get it back!~SCARGO::LEMIREFri Apr 10 1992 13:4716
    I went home last night without checking this file. I found out how
    to keep the butterfly. The other night I would try to use the tri-
    corder, but of course it will not work unless you stunn it.
    The badd news is that when I went back in fron my save program, I
    had no credits to offer the big ugly dude, so he wouldn't let me in.
    I tried getting him drunk, ( an old Mr. Scott trick! ) but after
    5 times, he didn't budge,. and would not offer to buy the booze from
    me like he did the night before.
    The worse news is that I have to bring the game back tonight. I will
    of course keep it a couple of more nights. The video store loves it
    when I do that.

    Thanks again for the info!

670.14Have you tried using the root?CADSYS::ECT::LADEROUTEFri Apr 10 1992 21:2922
When I rented the game I found out that a root that I picked is a type of
root that can put a person to sleep. But I never been able to use it to
knock somebody out. I brought the root with me to the "kitchen area" which
had a bottle of booze on the table. I tried USING the root on it, hoping
that I would create a drug which I could then give to the Ugly dude outside.

When I choose the ROOT when I was near the bottle, it said "Come closer".
I ended up getting near the food processor and used the ROOT there. But,
the booze did not knock out the Ugly dude. Maybe I need to be able to
activate the food processor and create some type of food first and then
use the root in the food; and bring that to the Ugly guy. Spock was able
to fix the food processor, you would think that there would be some way
to generate food with it.

If anybody finds a good use for the root let me know.

After finishing off that planet I got into a battle with a Romulan ship but
was unable to destroy it. Is there a trick to it? Who has destroyed the
ship and how did you do it?

Thanks,
Jim
670.15Is it the end? Or just begun?CGVAX2::LEMIREMon Apr 13 1992 22:3512
    I finished the game! Thanks to the help from this file. I thought
    it would be longer. Does anyone know if there is a second mission?
    After I retrieved the communicator, Bones, Spock and Kirk sat around
    discussing destiny, and the game ended.
    If that was indeed the end of the game, my rating would be 3 out of
    five stars.

    BTW I never found a use for the root, or the sheet you get after saving
    Harry Mudd. Could the sheet be used to activate another mission? Hmmm

    Could someone help me out here...

    On one planet the computer must be repaired by finding three modules
    and using them on the consoles. I've found two and used them. The
    third is in a room with two doors protected by a force field. A
    security robot inside the room can pass through the field (and whack
    you) but you can't get in. Spock says to use the abilities of the
    robot to get the module. I don't get it. I'd appreciate a hint or
    a spoiler.

    Thanks,

<space for rent >

If I remember correctly, you have to get the trash right on the module.
670.21It is a trashy game.CGVAX2::LEMIREWed May 06 1992 19:5810

    To be more specific, when the robot has just exited the sealed room,
    he will shoot you. You want to make shure that Kirk is in
    position to throw the trash directly to the component. When kirk gets
    up, he has just enough time to throw the trash, so the robot will stop,
    sweep it up, and deposit it outside of the forcefield.
