789.0. "Could someone xerox some instructions for me ?" by LEDS::HUNT (Larry Hunt) Tue Feb 02 1993 15:19

I recently purchased the following used games which didn't have
instuctions. I would appreciate and was wondering if someone would
xerox the instructions to the following games and mail them to me.

    Jordan vs. Bird basketball
    John Elway QB Football
    Super Mario 3
    Super Mario/Duck Hunt

    Thanks,

What you're asking for is against the law, and Nintendo and other companies have
run people down for xeroxing instructions.

To "legally" get the directions, you're suppose to call the manufacturer and
request them. They'll send a copy to you for a small fee.

Copyright law allows people to make copies for fair use. If ownership
of the games has been completely transferred and the original
instructions were lost or destroyed, I expect it would be fair use for
the owner of the games to make a copy of the instructions (or for
somebody to make a copy for the owner).

Nintendo has gone after rental stores that photocopied instructions,
but that is a different situation.

I once asked this very same question in here and my note was deleted
and returned to me with the explanation that what I asked for was
against the law and therefore against the notesfile policy.

I'm not asking for anyone to do anything illegal. I was thinking
of it in the same terms as .3 I own the games. Yes, I could get
the instructions by writing to the manufacturer and probably get them
free of charge (I did this year's ago for some inherited games). I
thought that since I own the games and instead of going the above route,
someone might xerox them instead. I've asked for a moderator to
comment/rule on this note to eliminate any problems and confusion.
