624.0. "Destiny of an Emperor" by RIPPLE::GRANT_JO (lifted waters walk and leap) Fri Apr 12 1991 12:54

I tried a DIR on `destiny' and `emperor' to no avail. If
    I've missed something please consolidate.

I picked up this game yesterday. It was on sale ($24.99)
and the guy let me try it out. It's actually quite good
    so far.

It is a RPG. Somewhat reminiscent of Ultima. Instead of
fighting monsters, though, you fight various bands of
brigands, rebels, pirates, and warlords. The fighting
scenes are strictly command mode. You may choose any of
several options per character or you may choose "all out"
battle. This brings the issue to a close very quickly,
and is recommended for encounters where you clearly overmatch
    your opposition.

It is a familiar scenario: you are a wonderful person and
everyone's hopes are riding on your success against the
bad guys. In this case, the bad guys are the Yellow Scarves.
There is an overland as well as various sub-screen areas.
Fights, of course, and castles, towns, camps, etc. There
are items to search for and tasks to perform.

None of the characters use "magic". Several characters, though,
can use special tactics that involve throwing fireballs, digging
ditches, raising defense against certain attacks - that resemble
magic. Ducks by another name, actually.

But I am just at the beginning. It appears to be a very, very
"large" game. It is definitely fun (so far) and I wonder
if anyone else has played it...

624.1A big thumb's upRIPPLE::GRANT_JOlifted waters walk and leapMon Apr 15 1991 22:1512
I put a few hours into the game this weekend and I have to
give it an unqualified recommendation. It just goes to
show the value of marketing. I don't think this one has
been heavily advertised, though I may be wrong. It is
made by Capcom, a major player.

But it really is an excellent RPG. Battles are in command
mode, so if you insist upon swordplay this one isn't
for you. If you liked Ultima, you'll like this!

624.2Help needed for Liu Zheng's Peaceful landXOANAN::RAINESusan RaineFri Apr 26 1991 22:4911
My sister asked me to post this.

She is playing this game and needs help on two things

How do you get into Liu Zheng's Peaceful land
and How do you wake up the warrior in his house

AS I gave her the game, she says it is my responsibility to help her
with it - so any help would be appreciated.

Not easy to answer, though I could do it were I there.

    [spoilers]

I think the sleeping guy and the peaceful guy are not in the
    same house.

For the sleeping guy, go back to the very first village - it's
right next to the first castle. Talk to the guy in the house
and then follow the trail, verbally and literally. You can
use the gullwing at some points. If you do this, you will
finally (again) reach the house with the sleeping guy. Talk
to the guy in the front of the house. When the game asks
you if you want to wake him up, answer `no.' Then wait.
You have to wait awhile. He'll wake up, talk to you,
then disappear. You have to follow him to the next
castle or so where he will finally join you.

As for getting by the peaceful land, I do believe that once
the sleeping guy joins you, you'll be able to talk to the
guy in the house and go right by. If not, then there's
someone else who must join you. But having the right
character in your party is the key to advancing at several
stages of this game. (e.g., having Lu Zhe to get by that
miserable woman who blocks the bridge in that one castle)

Well, I have been playing this game for about a week now and
really like it !! It is a lot like Dragon Warrior in that
you always fight in command mode. I have reached level 24
and have "tamed" three of the five tigers (strong generals).
It appears to be a long game but not boring by any means.
As you wander around looking for various items and recruiting
new troops (usually after defeating them in battle) the gold
and experience points build up steadily. No need to do a lot
of endless wandering just to gain strength and wealth. If you
like RPG's check this one out.

    Okay I'm stuck.

I'm at level 21 or 22 (can't remember which) and when I approach this
cottage from right to left I enter and someone says that I'm about to
enter the peaceful land of suc and such. I leave the cottage and the
map mode shows me to the right of the cottage again on the road. On
each side of the cottage are white mountains which prevent me from
    advancing to the left.

Do I need to do something to get by this cottage?

Also, who are the five tigers? I may have already tamed a few (was Lu
    Bu one of them?)

I'm loaded with men, bows, power pills, elixirs, have two gemswords,
    and all that jazz.

It's been a while, but: This was the hardest part - yes,
    you need something:

All you need is the right group composition (the 5 tigers).
Can't remember names, now, but go back and get the clues again,
then get the characters. To get one of them, you'll have to go
back and forth between locations a couple of times ...

    Steve,

So once the five tigers are "tamed" and in my party (on the screen),
that fellow in the cottage will let me pass huh?

Boy, sounds like a big chunk of the game may be behind me.
624.10Try it, You'll like itSUBWAY::FERRESTue Aug 27 1991 17:459
I thought so too, but there is surprisingly more left of the
    game.

I thought that this was THE BEST game of its "type" - I'm
surprised that more people haven't discovered it here, especially
as it was ranked very highly by the Pro's in Nintendo Power.

    You're right.

It's pretty deep and a great RPG for the money.

And there are tons of characters in here. If you like Dragon Warrior
    you'll like this game.

Well I played for awhile last night. I'm so strong that nobody stands a
chance when they come up against my army. I'm always doing "All-out" in
    the battles.

I have over 40 people so I may very well have the five tigers. I just
need to figure out which 5 they are and put them in my party.

From some of the clues I'd guess that two of the tigers are...

(since this may be a spoiler I'll treat it as such)

I finished this game a couple of weeks ago and believe me, you have a
long way to go. Two of the guys that you picked up early in the game
are "tigers" and you are right about two of the others. Have you got
the guy that sits in the pass to join you yet ? Also have you chased
the one guy all over the world to get him to join up ? Did you ask
if Lu Bu is one of the tigers ? He will show his true self before
long I would imageine. I think I was at level 50 when I finished this
game. Keep at it Mike, it is a great game.

Well I expect that I'll complete this game by the weekend. I'm on level
47 and through various actions and messages it appears that I need to
accomplish just a few more "tasks" to finally rid the country of all of
    the yellow scarves.

Every once in a while a game comes along that gives you more for your
money. This is one. It may not have the greatest of graphics but it is
one of the best RPG NES games I've played.

I'm closing in on the end of the game and will probably finish it this
    week.

Originally this game was to hold me over until I could get my hands on
Dragon Warrior III. This game has more than served it's purpose.

You're right about the game being long Jim. It's long but very
entertaining. The battle modes really make you think.

I think this game is even deeper than Final Fantasy.

I went back and forth several times. I have tried waiting in the
house and outside. Nothing seems to work. If I go to the tavern the
guy just says "so what". Back somewhere in some town a guy keeps
saying "Help Me". I've moved Leu Bu to just about every castle I could.

I had trouble with this part also, I went back to the first town but
the guy said that the man had left . I searched eveywhere to no avail.

Finally, I went back to the house that he had been sleeping in and
the man there said, Go to town and wait. I went back to the town he
suggested and talked to everyone but nothing !! I shut the game off,
back on and restarted talking to everryone in the town again. This
time one of the guys in town told me to go back to his house, that he
would see me now. I walked back to the cabin and the man was there and
I believe joined my party at that time. This was a very frustrating
time in the game for me as it seemed nothing would work. About the guy
that says "help me'. I was never able to "help" this guy but it
didn't seem to make any difference in finishing the game.

This is a great game but there are always a few things that need the
help of the experts. Like people before I'm having problems waking up
the sleeping man Liu Zheng's. If there is someone out there that can
tell me the names of the 5 tigers that are needed to wake this guy up
I can start getting some sleep at night. It's been a long month trying

I don't remeber the names of the five tigers but to wake the guy
I had to first chase him from town to town. I never caught up but
ended up back at his cabin where a guy told me " Go to town and
wait". So, I went back up the screen to the previous town, stopped
the game and then turned it back on. Then I questioned everyone in
town and was told by one man to go back to the cabin and I would
be seen. At this point I went back to the cabin and Liu Zheng was
waiting for me. I had wandered aimlessly for days before trying this.
I even thought I had tried it before with no success. This seemed to
be the hardest part to get through in the game, good luck.

I can't figure out how to use the Gemsword. At some point somebody

My most humble 8 year old has captured almost all of the generals but cannot

624.32<<< Defeat Si Ma Yi ? >>>POKIE::CALKINSWed Aug 05 1992 20:2456

My son and I really enjoy this game! After many hours of play we are at
at point where we could use assistance to break an impass. We can't seem
to be able to defeat Si Ma Yi, Yang Xiu, and Jiang Gan at Chin Castle.

We get to the gates at Chin Castle and with the help of the key strokes
... (up up down down left right up down) we avoid Si Ma Yi's magic
spell. Unfortunately, no combination of battle & tactics seem to get
us past this point. I assume we do not have the correct tactics and or
combination of travelers to defeat Si Ma Yi. Any help will be
    appreciated?

Also, some where along the way (hours ago) I recall a hint about a
great war horse called "Chi Tu Ma" ... something about 8 west and 1
south as the coordinates to search. Where and how does one find this
    horse?

Other information on our party ...

We are at level 50 and have the following travelers:

Chang Bao, Zhao Yun, Jiang Wei (alternate strategist), Guan Xing, Ma Chao,
(armed with swords Bo Ye, Nu Long, Quing Long, Quing Quang, and Wan Shang
respectively) Huang Zhong, and Zhu Ge Liang (the designated strategist).

Zhu Ge Liang's tactics include: Huo Shen (Fire), Shui Long (Water),
Jin Xian (Healing), Ce Mian (Null Attacks), Gui Huan (Gullwing), and
    Bei Ji (Power Increase).

Jiang Wei's tactics include: Huo Shen, Shui Long, Wan Fu (Recovery),
Ji Mian, Gui Huan, An Sha (Assassination).

To those of you who have conquered this game ... how far are we from
the end? How many of the five tigers do we have?

We're looking forward to hearing from anyone who has shared the game.

    KC
