507.0. "N.F.L. Football" by CRBOSS::CLAYBROOK () Fri Aug 24 1990 15:40

    Has anyone played this football game yet, (N.F.L.) It's getting
    near football season and I'm getting real itchy. I'm bored with
    Techmo Bowl, and I can't find N.F.L. anywhere that rents it. So
    wondering if it's worth buying.
                                        Thanks  Dan

507.1Brief ReviewCSC32::MARZULLAFri Aug 24 1990 16:2453

    I have NFL Football and think it is more involved then Tecmo Bowl as
    far as plays are concerned. It kind of reminds me of the old
    Intellevison Football game if you are familar with that one. You have
    something like 16 or so basic plays to chose from at first but when the
    screen changes to the playing field you could then call and audible to
    change your play. There is only one audible per play for example if you
    select a play action pass then see the defence and call an audible the
    play will change to a draw play. Once you snap the ball you can select
    several different recievers (running backs, tight ends , or receivers)
    like you could in Tecmo Bowl.
    Before you start your game you could select different team strengths as
    all teams start equally. There are something like 5 different team
    formats to chose from and each position is given a strength rating (A
    through C, with A being the strongest). Once you select a team format
    you can power up 2 different postions but doing this increases the odds
    of getting more penalties called against you.. Here are some of my
    likes and dislikes of this game.

    Likes:

    o Many offensive and defensive plays to chose from.
    o Excellent two player game (best if person knows or understands
      football)
    o Has every NFL team and starts out even, lets you build your own
      strengths.
    o Good strategy game.
    o More incomplete passes and also has penalties. More realistic.

    Dislikes:

    o Lousy one player game as the computer is ALWAYS too easy to beat.
      Even when I was a rook I never lost. **Major flaw in my opinion.**
    o Is quite a bit slower in play then Tecmo Bowl but at times is nice
      when needing time to figure out new plays.
    o There is no season play like in Tecmo, you only play one game at a
      time and then have to start over again. No password or battery
      feature

    Overall I think this game is good (I happened to like the Intellevision
    game too) but unless you have somebody to play against alot, I think
    you will get bored with it soon. It kind of reminds me of Tecmo's early
    season games (or late ones with good teams) where they are easy. the
    computer is really too easy to beat(come to think of it I'm not
    sure it EVER scored on me). I think Tecmo is a good two player game
    also but I think NFL is more realistic and has more strategy but less
    playability..

    Hope this helps,
    Steve

    Isn't this one of the games with a 4 palyer option? If so, how do they
    incoporate the other players in?
507.3nothing like INTEL.CRBOSS::CLAYBROOKMon Aug 27 1990 18:573
    Thanks alot, I probably won't by it if it is that easy to beat.
    I've still never found a better football game than intellivision.

    RE:.2

    This game dosen't have a 4 player option. I do remember seeing
    a football game in the Nintendo mag that had a 4 player option but this
    one dosen't. I forget what the name of that game was. I can look it up
    though if I remember when I get home.

    Re:.3

    Dan,

    I too like the Intellivision football game. This game is very similar
    but has more options and is more involved. If only the computer was
    more challenging it would be very good. I think the only good thing
    about playing the computer is to practice plays. I guess you could look
    at it that Intell. was only a two player game and this one would rate
    higher if played as a two player game. Off the subject alittle, my
    favorite Intell. game is the Ice Hockey one and like it much more then
    either of the Nintendo versions..

507.5Intel. made a comebackCRBOSS::CLAYBROOKTue Aug 28 1990 15:2318
    I remember once we bought the Intel hockey game and there was something
    wrong with the tape, so we brought it back and my brother ended up
    getting a nother game. Do you know that Intel made a comeback a few
    years ago, somebody besides Mattel, the football and baseball games
    you could play against the computer, so naturally I bought both of
    them, the baseball one stinks, you can slide into a base, so as soon
    as you get on base you steal and start sliding halfway and it's like
    he flys in, if your up first you'll never get out, one thing about
    it was there were grounders into the outfield. The new football
    tape isn't bad, I still sometimes plug it in and play, a good point
    football is if your the qb throwing and theres a defensive player
    in between you and the reciever he won't intercept it, the quaterback
    throws over him. My Intel. unit sits right next to my Nintendo.
    Does anybody still have there system. I still go over my brothers
    house sometimes and we sit down and play baseball, football and tennis
    for about 5 hours, when it comes to sporting games, no one matches
    Intel.
                                               Dan
507.6Still have Intel.CSC32::MARZULLATue Aug 28 1990 15:4313

    Dan,

    I still have my Intel with 28 games.. I never heared of those football
    or baseball games. That was one bad thing about the old football game
    and that is with a defender getting inbetween the QB and receiver and
    picking the ball off. It was like the QB throwing a sholder high pass
    40 yards downfield..
    By the way, I forgot to look up the name of the 4 player football game
    for Nintendo.

507.7Found out through the mailCRBOSS::CLAYBROOKTue Aug 28 1990 16:5112
    Steve
          the only way we found out about the new games was that my
    dad received a brochure in the mail, saying that Intel was making
    a comeback, and had a list of games. The hockey one you were
    talking about was changed so you could play against the computer.
    But just like when we first got the system 12 to 13 years ago
    the hockey game didn't work, so we sent it back and they sent
    another one, that didn't work. So we said the hec with it. If your
    interested I could let you borrow the football and baseball games
    I still have the instructions.

507.8N.E.S Play Action FootballCSC32::MARZULLAFri Aug 31 1990 14:127

    The football game that allows up to 4 players is called N.E.S Play
    Action Football. I have never played or seen this game so I don't know
    anything about it.. Anybody else?

    The graphics are OK but not great.. The screen gets alittle busy at
    times and the characters sometimes blink a little..
