503.0. "Snake, Rattle 'n' Roll" by JARETH::EDP (Always mount a scratch monkey.) Mon Aug 20 1990 12:36

Snake, Rattle 'n' Roll is a run-around game. Run around and get the
food, jump on the monsters, get the special prizes, jump the waterfall,
    et cetera.

It is a three-dimensional game. The main character is a snake -- a
head with a small tail. Eating pellets makes the tail grow, and the
tail must reach a certain size before you are heavy enough to weight
down a scale and open the door to the next level.

The snake runs around a checkerboard world. There are places to jump
up to a ledge, ponds and waterfalls of water to avoid or swim in,
circular covers in some squares to open, machines that shoot out food
with an occasional bomb, et cetera.

It looks like a cute game so far, although it is a bit early for me to
recommend it or not. I have had a bit of trouble figuring out exactly
which square I am on; I am not sure if this is because the
three-dimensional placement in the game is not accurate or because I am
interpreting what I see incorrectly. Also, there does not seem to be a
password, but there is a continue feature while the game is on. I'm
not sure yet if higher worlds will present new things to keep one's
    interest in the game.

If anybody finds out, let us know.

I've played this a bit more. It's fun! It's been a while since an
arcade run-around game attracted me, but this one's cute and has some
    nice mechanisms in it.

One recommendation: I find sitting near the television helps you
visualize the game better. The three-dimensional aspect can make
knowing where you are located a bit tricky; sitting close lets you see
    more detail.

I just found this game and like it so far--for someone who doesn't do
arcade shoot-em-ups. I started to do better when I slowed down and
deliberately placed myself on the selected squares. I'm still learning
to deal with the A and B buttons in quick succession.

My question, though, is: is it actually possible to jump *onto* one of
the moving baddies? I've tried, and there's a tremendous lag between
when I think I'm going to land and when the bad guy shows up on the
square I want to pounce on. Also, I'm not sure yet how to control the
distance of a jump. Up and down is fine, as is a long jump, but
knowing exactly where I'm going to land on a long jump is beyond me.

So far I like it better than the Marble Madness implementation.

    Re .2:

Yes, you can land on the moving baddies. Most of them anyway; there
are some in higher rounds that you cannot land on without hurting
    yourself.

You can make a jump shorter by releasing the jump button sooner.

It can be difficult to tell where you are going to land. I'm not
convinced the programmers got it right. But you can get better with
experience. In some places, I keep an eye on the shadow your character
casts; that pinpoints the square your character is above, when the
    shadow is visible.

I just got this game and I like it so far. It mentions in the
instructions that there is a way to jump "extra high" by sacrificing a
segment of the tail. Did anybody figure this out yet?

I just eat some bombs to shorten my tail.

    cool graphics, huh?

I rented this and found the graphics to be among the best i've seen
yet. and the two player mode is really nice. there's a lot of things
happening on the screen and the response is just fine.

I reached a plateau around the 4th world that I never could get beyond.

The plateau on the 4th level is where I'm stuck now too. How do you get
up to the high ledge? I have found that in the water, when bitten by a
shark you can get to a high ledge. But on level 4 there is no such help
that I can see of. Has anybody beaten level 4? How?

not positive that it's the forth world i'm stuck at, but here's the
    description...

the checkboard is red. you begin by going along a ledge, go up and
double back. there's a playing field where you see your first niblits
that turn into splotches (or holes?). you then go down, head left, and
come to another playing field with minimal action. down from there, and
double back a few times, and that's where i get stuck. I can see the
scale above my head (too high to consider leaping for) and I know i
need to jump up to another ramp, but i can't find where...

Does that world have a waterfall, razor blades, and the spike-throwing
things? If so, the place to get up to the ledge where the scale is is
next to the waterfall, after you have doubled back. If not, I'll have
    to play and look.

thats the place alright. But I have to agree with .-1, how do
    you get up there?

I think the graphics are kinda confused there - I can't really focus on
how the corner is. It's like those Escher drawings kinda.

503.13JARETH::EDPAlways mount a scratch monkey.Thu Jan 17 1991 10:5316
    Re .11, .12:

First, you cross the waterfall (right to left) and get to the bottom
ledge. You go back and forth once or twice to work up to higher
ledges. When you are back at the waterfall as high as you can get,
there is a platform next to the waterfall. You have to jump out over
the waterfall and turn the corner while in the air and land on that
platform. From there, you can jump to the very highest ledge, again
    with an around-the-corner motion.

Be careful on the highest ledge -- go slow until an anvil drops, go
past it but keep going slow until an anvil drops, then run like hell
for the scale and run back to the waterfall.

I did what you said and I'm still having problems. The ledge that faces
out over the waterfall is where I try to jump. The nearest ledge is too
high to get to. It is "L" shaped and has a lid on it. From there I can
see that you would be able to jump out and to the left to get to the
ledge on the top of the waterfall which leads to the scale.

But..The ledge I have to jump to is two blocks tall. I can't make it
when I face it and jumping out over the water and turning in only
crashes me back into the wall and down into the water where I return to
the lowest ledge and start over again. Is there something your leaving
out? Is it possible to jump two blocks if you jump and turn?

    Re .14:

You cannot jump up to the L-shaped ledge from near the waterfall. You
have to go back to the left side. There's a place where you can jump
across two spaces (I think) and up to a single square with a lid on it.
From that, you can jump around the corner to another single square.
From that, you can jump toward the waterfall to another single square
and another and then to the L-shaped ledge.

By the way, if you do not have all the tail segments you need when you
reach the scale, stay on or near the scale but out of the way -- an
anvil will fall and set off the scale!

To get to the rocket, you must hold down the right-arrow in the
controller pad (or hold your joystick to the right) from the very
moment the first round starts and you must keep it held until you reach
the end. You must also press the jump button so that you jump over
enemies and other obstacles and jump out of the water without hitting
    anything that slows you down.

If you are slowed down even the slightest bit, you will miss the
rocket, although you will get a chance to see it. If you are slowed
down a little more than just the slightest bit, you will not see the
    rocket.

    Re .22:

It might be easier to avoid the foot instead of killing it. After
that, you have to climb up a slope on the right side of the screen. I
think the doorway is shortly after that. I haven't been through it,
and I'm probably not going to play anymore -- I don't like having to
work my way through the same screens over and over again to get to the
point where I can make new progress. A little repetition is okay, a
    lot isn't.

Haven't seen mention of the Warp from level 1 to 3, so thought I'd
bring it up. When you come out of the door and first start seeing
water to your right, you'll see an innocuous looking block/island (it
doesn't have a door on top). I'm pretty sure it's the first one you'll
see. Hope on it, use your B Button and you'll find yourself on Level
    3.

Fun stuff. My fiancee's boys brought it to our house one night. We
immediately went out and got it, and have been playing ever since. Now
