455.0. "Al Unsers Turbo Racing" by EXIT26::SAARINEN () Fri May 04 1990 18:17

I just rented Al Unsers Turbo Racing. I had alot of fun with it.
You have Time Trial A where you race against a field of other cars or
Time Trial B where you race alone on the course by yourself. You
can set up your cars suspension and aerodynamics etc... You can
race a time trial with up to 4 players and you have, I think 16
different international race courses to choose from as well as the
number of laps you want to go.

When you race on the Grand Prix Series you can practice,as well as qualify
for a starting position and race. It's a fast moving game, especially
with the Turbo working, the turns are quick. When you wipe out, you
don't explode into flames, it more or less a spinout where the car
stays on 4 wheels. You have a choice of 4 different musical
backgrounds, or none at all. Each lap usually lasts under a minute,
and where a small off the course manuver will slow you down. It really
comes down to hundredths of seconds between each run...so its heads up
    play.

There are 4 gears 1st,2nd,3rd and Turbo which speeds you up by 40+
miles and hour. When you pit, which you'll have to when you race, you
can refuel as well as fix any damage, which takes x amount of seconds
to complete depending on the damage. Downshifting and gentle breaking
seems to be the key, as well as being on full blown turbo. There is
a course map for each race track, and you can get advice from little AL
about each track, and car setup.

I like it because you are in the drivers seat postion and get the feel
of excelleration and braking fairly well...instead of looking down at
cars moving on a track...and as always...

I have beaten the game the first day I have rented it. First I would
like to say that I would not buy this game unless you like playing it
over and over again. When I rented it I used the name UNSER JR and I
started with a maxed out car which is a car that has every thing
powered up. In the series the race is done by points. The amount of
points you get depends on where you finish. Also before each race you
have 1 qualifing lap where you have to go as fast as you can through a
lap of the couse and score a good time. This will determine where you
will start in the field. I find it easy to use turbo all the way every
lap and to pit stop every lap. Because of havind a powerful pit crew I
will be able to get out on the course and keep my first place position.

    You like those TT's ehhh?

Too bad they don't have a bicycle TT Nintendo game... ;-)

I had some fun with this game.

It was hard at first, and it's tough to manuever when in the
middle of a pack of the other cars.

Using the Turbo at the right times is crucial. And
I found that if you turn hard, in the direction of the curve - as soon
as you see the arrow signs - you can hug them better and faster.

    >>I typed in UNSER JR...

Aren't you ruining the point of the game? Half the fun is winning races
by your own ability, thus gaining a faster and better car with each win.
Starting with a pre-souped-up car takes away any challenge.

I liked the different courses - some are easier than others.
I didn't like the pitting area. It seemed cumbersome, and difficult to
    turn into.

All in all - a good couple nights fun.

I also thought this game was good, and would definantly rent it
    again.
I was playing this game and somthing weird happend. I don't remember
which track I was on but with one lap left and needing to refuel
I tried to pit and went straight through the pit and when I came
out I was sort of invinceable(SP?) I could drive through anything?
    Anyone know what happened?

    RE: Note 455.4

You became invincible by going thru the pits without stopping and
driving back onto the track again? Is that what happened?

    Have you done it again?
