405.0. "BATMAN (the game)" by CONURE::AMARTIN (Teenage Mutant brat pukes!) Wed Jan 17 1990 10:43

BATMAn is out. Or so it would appear. Anyone (out west probably) have
it yet? I would love some reviews on it. A friend of mine has a rag
that talks about it. The graphics look splendid, and it looks like it
    will be enjoyable.

    Anyone elso hear of it?

The Dark Knight has tricked you (and my wife and kid). The latest
Nintendo Power sure does make it look like Batman is in the stores..
but he is still in the warehouse! Every store I've tried has said
February! My list is about 30 stores long and ends with TrySoft..who
also says - February. The NES Planner (?) at the end of this months
Power puts Batman in February too. Hang in there Bat chums, stay tuned,
is this the end for Batman? Tune in next month, same Bat-time,
Bat-note.

405.5Holy Video Games! It's here!MISFIT::GEMMELand now here's Mac and Tosh...Mon Mar 05 1990 16:5930
    BATMAN IS OUT!

I just picked up a game at Kiddie City (44.99) and saw it at Toys R Us
(46.99). I live in the Rochester NY area but Toys R Us almost
everywhere should have it in stock. Haven't opened it yet (resisting
the temptation!) but the back cover copy reads:

He's totally new. Totally tough, and he'll stop at nothing
    	to make shure justice prevails!

From the dark streets of GOTHAM CITY (tm) to the deepest
corners of the criminal underworld comes the CAPED CRUSADER (tm)
as you've never seen him before.

Incredibly strong. Armed to the teeth. And ready to put his life
on the line for the sake of all, on a search-and-destroy mission
to end The Hoker's (tm) reign of terror. He leaps, he flies, he
dodges enemy fire and delivers it right back...with a vengeance.

This is no kid stuff. This is as real video gaming gets. If you
liked what you saw in the movie, you're gonna love what you see
here. Because this time around, BATMAN is all business, and he
won't let anything - *anything*- stand in his way!

Now all I've got to do is get through SMB3's eighth level. My son is
desperate to finish off the last level (so are my wife and I, we miss
our Tengen Tetris games). I may not tell him I got this game until we
    are done with SMB3.

    Steve
405.6First impressionsMISFIT::GEMMELand now here's Mac and Tosh...Wed Mar 07 1990 17:3416
Well, we defeated Bowser in SMB3 now we cn get to BATMAN....

If you like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Ninja Gaden, and the kind of
game where you run, fight, leap, climb, punch, shot, throw stuff, and
knock off as many baddies as possible, then BATMAN is your kind of
game. My son demostrated the, what I call, "wall climbing leap" where
the Caped Crusader can leap onto a wall and "grab" (Holy Spiderman!).
He proceeded to bounce between walls and climb up a vertical section of
the scene. I was impressed with his skill, I tried it, BATMAN fell
into a pool of toxic acid and died (not very smart for a super crime
    fighter).

Anyway, the game is fun, frustrating, and fascenating (sp) once you get
    the hang of it.

7/10 rating from my son's reactions
405.7How about some more....MSBVLS::LECUYERThu Mar 08 1990 11:437
Can you be a little more specific about the game....I love TNMNT so
I'll probably get this one. But I haven't found it anywhere, I'll
check at TOY'S R US in Auburn Mass tonight hopefully it will be
there....but how about a little more detail! PLEASE.... How many
lives do you have? How many levels? How are the graphics? please....
(in case you can't tell I am a BATMAN fan and have been dying to
  see this game...:->)  Tim

405.9More info on BATMANSAHQ::SCHULTZOrcas & Dolphins: Humans of the SeaSun Mar 11 1990 01:0322
I will try to answer the questions of the last couple of notes without
giving away too much or info that might be considered spoilers.

The game has five areas for Batman to fight through in order to reach
is nemisis, the Joker. Each area as 3-4 stages that Batman fights
though with the final stage for the area being the one that has the
    Boss for that area.

Graphics on a scale of 1-10 are an 8. Game control is very good. As
with Ninja Gaiden, there are graphic episodes between areas that show
Batman progressing ever closer to the Joker. This is no accompaning
    story test though.

There is no save or password feature. There are however unlimited
continues. This does allow you a chance to beat the game, but you have
got to pay the price of many hours of play time in order to progress
far enough to get at the Joker. I have made it to area 5, stage 1 and
it takes almost 3 hours to do that.

I hope this helps aspiring Caped Crusaders!

    Craig
405.10Batman The GameWFOV11::HARRIS_RMon Mar 12 1990 10:5914
My oldest son has made it to the third area, first stage. This
was after about four hours of play. What I like about this game
is that there are many continues as you like but if you loose you're
weapons at a stage you might have to fight without weapons until
you pass the area you're stuck in. On some level's getting past
all "bosses" with out weapons is tough.

Since I don't play video games often, I have four sons who can wait
that long before I get a turn, I judge the reactions of my son's
to determine if the game was worth the $. In this case, the game
cost me $46.00 at Toy's R Us. It's worth it. I rate the graphics
a solid eight, I wish there was a digitalized voices to go with
it. In all it's a very entertaining game. It should be a long
time before you start seeing second hand copies for sale.
405.11T.M.N.T. move over....MSBVLS::LECUYERMon Mar 12 1990 12:4514
Well I couldn't wait! I went out friday night and picked up BATMAN
the video game. This is only the second game I have ever bought (can
never justify the cost...especially when I can rent 85% of them at
the video store!) adn I am glad I did! I am a BATMAN fan and really
enjoy this game the graphics are good and the action gets harder at
every level! I've made it to the level where the tread miles are...
I especially like the continue feature! (I hate having to start from
the begining when I die lke most games) I especially like the fact
that you keep the amount of weapons that you have when you die. I
have loaned this game already to my 6yr old nephew....look's like
it will be a while before I get to finish it! oh well that's what
uncle's are for.....(get them what they want....get them the game of
the DECADE!) sorry wanted to be the first to say it......:-} Tim

    Well???? anyone else play it?

I got it a week or so agao, and love it.

I have attained stage 2-3 so far.

Most of the action is pretty straight forward, if not easily figured
out, but when it comes to "climbing" you have a problem.

"Climbing" takes ALOT of practice. I have yet to actually make it "up"
in one shot. Usually take two or three "continues" to make it up.....

worth the dough I put down on it.

Well I finally got this back from my nephew as he was not having much
luck getting thru the various levels. I have made it to level 4-4
and can not kill the two white blocks that are shooting at you while
they are climbing around the small room, anybody made it past these
things? if yes can you please tell me how to get by them as I am not
having much luck, I've tried the battarang, gun, and the star's and
I can't seem to kill them. If anyone needs any helping getting this
far I'll be happy to tell them how to defeat the various bosses at
the ending of the various level's. (that is except the level that
  I am stuck on.).....Tim

Well first of all before you get to this level you are in the one
with all the conveyor belts and bombs that drop from the ceiling....
while you are in this level the 2nd time you come to a ceiling bomb
dropper you want to wait there and build up your hearts and your weapons
(weapons only go to 99) it takes a while but is worth it. I suggest
using the gun and squating when you see a bomb drop. then go to the
right and jump down you have to then jump down to the left grab onto
the wall on the right and jump back up left. the you keep going left
onto a long belt squat and switch to punch, a rolling machine will
come at you, punch it out and then run left and jump up twice then
down the tunnel with grinders on both sides. then through the rest
of the maze using punch not weapons. once inside the boss area use
the gun only. Shoot the two guns mounted on the far right wall while
jumping to avoid the bullets being shot at you. I think it takes about
10 or 12 shots, then get up on the right side shelf and shoot across
to the target on the far left when that is gone turn right and start
walking towards the target that switches into a 3 gun cannon (you
will probably get shot at least once) find the area that you can squat
and not be hit when the cannon shoots, switch to punch and jump and
punch when the cannon is not shooting and the target is there. It
usually takes about 3 times to get thru this. Now you should still
have plenty of weapons in the water area. Switch to the batarang and
use that to kill the first dog you might want to go near it slowly
and start shooting as soon as you see them and as fast as you can
it takes practice but once you get the hang of it it's pretty easy.
I find the last dog you face is the hardest because there are 2 rolling
bomb things that you must kill and a dog comes at you all at the same
time. You'll get the hang of it, it's not that bad. Wait till you
  get to the next level........Tim

405.19Made level 5-1MSBVLS::LECUYERFri Apr 20 1990 12:516
Finally this past monday the 16th I made it to level 5-1. I finally
got past the two white blocks that shoot at you and seem indestructable
If anyone needs a spoiler on that let me know and I'll put on in.
Of all the little screen shows between each level I liked the one
to level 5 best. Funny but sometimes what seem to be the hardest
things to get by can be some of the easiest......Tim
405.20The white blocks.POETS::SCHNARECHARLIE SCHNARESun May 06 1990 00:0656
I got by the two white blocks at 4-4 and here is how I did it.

When you enter the romm where the two blocks are you climb up the two
walls that are on the left. When you get to the top position yourself
on the center ledge and face left. A block will eventually go by you on
the left when it is about to go by you start to punch it like heck. You
may think that when it is coming at you that you might get hit but you
wont because when you hit the white blocks they flash for a second or
two-during that time they can not hurt you and they will pass through
you. Also after you hit one as it goes by on the far far left there is
another block that will shoot at you. If you time it right you can hit
its bullet and make it harmless.

PS- has anybody made it to the Joker. If so I have some questions about
him because I can not harm him at all.

1- How do you dodge the electricity he shoots from his cane.

2- how do you dodge the electricity he summons that fills the whole
    room.

I just rented Batman. The game is great. I'm gonna have to run out
and buy it. I'll never be able to wait until Christmas.

I spent months trying to decide whether to get the Nintendo or spend
the extra money for the Turbographics-16. I was in the stores several
time watching the TGX-16 displays. I think the Batman (with the
expanded memory chip) has as good of graphics as any TGX-16 game.
Hopefully all of the new games that come out will use these new chips.

Is there a way to make a long jump? (not high, but long). I'm up to

across and I always lose one increment of life. I don't know if there
is a way to hang off the ceiling for a brief second or what.

    Answer:

You're close -- hang off the wall instead of the ceiling. Step off the
ledge, move left and grab the wall, then spring to the other side (the
BATMAN Wall Jump). This took me a while to master, but now I do it
fairly regularly. I'm up to level 3-3, and still fighting.

    I have beaten the Joker.

    (spoiler follows)

What you really need is an advantage controller or something with a
turbo function. When .you have the regular controller I found that the
easiest way is to jump jokers gun andf kneel down in front of him and
try to punch his lights out. In that position you can also avoid
getting hit by lightning sometimes. I have tried to use 1 weapon the
battarang and I gave him 85 and he still did not fall. If you have
turbo you can just get next to him and punch his lights out.

ps- The ending is worth it.
