393.0. "Castlevania - The Adventure (Game Boy)" by GSRC::WEST (Variables don't, Constants aren't) Sun Jan 07 1990 04:07

Has anyone else played this yet ?? I just picked it up a few days ago
and have been at it ever since.

It's difficult at first but things become a *little* easier with some
(read lots) of practice.

  I really like it.

I got this one a while back. Right now I'm stuck on dealing with
the death bats. If you find out anything let me know.

Are you refering to the ones at the end of level 1 just before the primary
evil ??

If so, this is usually what I try to do :

Jump up on the first brick...this makes the bat appear, then jump off
the brick and either try to avoid the bat until it comes to a rest or
kill it with your whip.

What you want to happen is have the bat rest then jump back on the brick
and start jumping right to the next brick...etc.

If you have the super whip (shoots fireballs) then jump up on the first brick
and snap your whip...this is kill the bat and away you go...

NOTE : If you jump off the brick and kill the bat another will appear
as soon as you jump back onto the brick...

393.3I hate jumping those bricksWILARD::DIONNEFri Jan 12 1990 11:067
Waiting for sleeping bats is the way to go. I just need to develop
a better technique for jumping the bricks now. I did succeed and
get to the primary evil once, but I had so little life left, I got killed.

Thanks for the tip. On to brick jumping.

RE: .4 Hiro, where is the rope you must pick up and how do you pick it
up? All I can seem to do is climb the ropes in level 1.

I did get past the first Primary Evil several times. If you jump up on
the first brick and expect the death bat to come along (he always does)
you can immediately jump up and get him with your whip. Sometimes
(20%) there is a second bat which is really annoying. Anyway, after
you jump all the bricks and make the PE appear, you can charge him and
crack your whip 1 or 2 times. Then back away and jump up on the
platform. He keeps going to the right. When he gets out from under
you, jump left then charge him again. Back away when he comes for you
and go to the left and repeat the moves.

If you think the bats are bad in level one, wait till you get to level
    2. There are 2 groups of three bats right at the beginning and it is
impossible to get by them without some damage being done to you.

THEN!! there are some kind of lizard heads that spit death ball at you.
Three or four whip cracks dispose of them if the balls don't get you
first. That's as far as I got. Spoilers are welcome.

393.6great game, but the book has no cluesBSS::AMBERSun Mar 11 1990 17:2814
I picked up this game yesterday and have a hard time putting it down.

I, too, have a real hard time with the trios of death bats at the start
of stage 2. I can get by them, but at great cost to my lifeline. I've
tried to ignore them, but they will continue to haunt you. It seems to
me that you're better off killing them a.s.a.p.

There are some candles that are too high to get even if you jump. It
seems like you may have to jump on an enemy and unce even higher, but I
have not been able to do this with any accuracy, and it always costs a
    notch on the lifeline.

I would like to know if this game has secret blocks and other invisible
things like Super Mario et.al. - I haven't found any yet...

*can* be hit by a fireball. And it's got a 1UP.

keel climbing. It's got a few neat things.

Thanks for the hint in .7 - I will try it tonite.

Has anyone gotten to the end of level 4 yet? I have been there a
couple of times but have had absolutely no luck in trying to kill the
last evil. He's much more powerful than the others and even fireballs
don't seem to help much. Hints would be welcome.

In level 2, when you pick up the torch that makes you invulnerable and
go to the left and down the rope, you go through a screen that has
several cylinders arranged as steps. Those eyeball things follow you.
If you turn around just before the rope and whip the eyeballs as they
come at you, when they explode they blow a hole in the cylinder. You
    can then go down.......

Does anybody have any spoilers on how to kill the bosses at the end of
level 2? This is the one with a bunch of creatures jumping out of
holes in the wall. I can't get by this one. I didn't find the secret
room in level 2 that someone mentioned before, maybe that will help,
    I'll try tonight.

I finally got by the level 2 bosses. Are there any secret rooms in

393.11Answer (spoiler) to .10CARTUN::VALENTINEThu Jun 14 1990 18:3119
    Spoiler to follow:

The secret room in level three is at the very end when you are
climbing the rope to the room with the evil. About 1/3 up the solid
wall on the right is the entrance. Just keep trying to go right.

There is no secret room in level 4 that I have been able to find. The
same set of goodies are out in the open in the next to the last screen,
    tho.

The moving wall is tough! The only hint I can give you is to JUST KEEP
MOVING! It takes practice, but if you don't stop for any of the
torches (they don't do you any good anyway) and get the worms, etc on
the first try, you CAN stay ahead of it. GOOD LUCK!

By the way, I still have not been able to get the last Bat-thing evil.
If anyone has figured it out, PLEASE TELL MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEe.......

    Great game, though!

How do I get a fireball - I must have missed something. I've gotten
as far as fighting the primary evil at the end of level one - almost
got him last night but...

I never had a fire ball power added to my whip yet - how do I do that?

Help - I also am stuck with these creatures. I've tried jumping like crazy
and whipping but have only killer 3 or 4 before they get me. It takes
me so long to work my way up there that I would like a strategy hint
before I do battle next time.

I really like the suspended rope bridge - it's great fun.

The first thing that can be done about a problem is to OBSERVE it.
So just take your time once and try to find out what is happening on the screen.
(Thank god there is a continue function so you don't have to start from the
beginning after you're done with your observations :-)

You will find that creatures jumping from the same hole always go the same way.
My strategy requires no jumping and not much running, but well timed whipping.
The only thing I do is to rush back and forth between two positions (marked X in
the little drawing below). From these two positions all creatures can be hit,
given a bit of timing for the whipping.
Just watch in which hole a creature starts to appear. Run to the appropriate
X position and prepare to whip to the left or right, as needed. You can always
count on the fact that the same strategy will work for creatures jumping from
the same hole. You'll have to be pretty alert though, in order to avoid that
more than 1 creature is alive on the screen at the same time.

! ! O = holes (may not be accurate, because who would

Thanks for the hints - about the continue function. The only continue
that I know about is after you get killed it usually only takes
you back a bit - but after 3 deaths it takes me back to the beginning
of level 2 so it takes me quite a bit of time to get back to the guys
jumping out of the walls - am I missing a better way to continue?

No, unfortunately not (I don't get past level 4). But I think there is a
bonus cave in level 2 where you can pick up an extra life. It is on a staircase
where these eyes come rolling down. Some sort of a crack is visible in one of
the stones. If you make an eye (or two) go boom in its vicinity, a small
entrance opens up. If you need clearer instructions, I can look it up in a
magazine I have at home.
Keep going!

    free 1up!
    -----------
don't whip the first candle you see!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
just walk past it-you will find an extra 1up later on.
go into the bonus room in level 1, get everthing and die.
when you reappear, go back 1 room and get the candle with the 1up.
repeat as long as you wish. you will wind up with one more
life every time you repeat the tip.
