387.0. "Genghis Khan from Koei" by CTOAVX::GUMBUS (Gumby) Wed Jan 03 1990 15:07

Has anyone seen for sale or played a new war strategy game from
Koei (makers of Nobunanga's Ambition) that is called Genghis Khan?
I would be interested in your experience with the game once it comes
    out.

387.2Genghis Khan - For dedicated strategists onlySPMFG1::THOMASMWHATEVERTue May 08 1990 16:4522
I have Genghis Khan. If you like strategy games then you will LOVE
this one!. It involves sending spies, attempted assinations, tactical
strategy for warfare, economics of your country, alliances, treaties
and a dozen other aspects to leading a country. The game has two
phases. The first is for you (Genghis Khan) to unite the 14 tribes
into one empire. The second will be to match your abilities against
Alexander the Great, Richard the Lion-Hearted and a Japanese Shogun
for world conquest. I'm only in the first phase.

There is a tactical display so that armies can fight other armies.
If your country is involved then you position and manuever your
troops. I could probably go on for another hour but I don't have
    time.

I bought the game at Toys-R-Us for a whopping $60. However, the
game has five levels of difficulty and the two stages which will
keep me busy for the next six months. I've already failed on three
earlier conquest. In one case one of my princes rebelled and
    defeated my army.

Hope you'll find the time to tell us a little more about the
    game.

I've got "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" by the same company,
and the games sound similar. But from what I read and hear,
as terrific as "Romance" is, "Genghis" is even better.

Could you list the basic options you have at each turn? Do the
seasons affect what you can do?

I also have this game and I have been playing it for months. I
would also like to say that this is a fantastic game, very complex.
I am also impressed with how well it mirrors all the problems of being
a world leader and conquerer. The number of problems you run into can
really be a headache, after awhile you start feeling sorry for poor old
Gengis, and you wonder how he put up with all this!
I have been playing the SAME game episode for months now. The
nature of the game changes as you go along and get larger. The
strategies that worked earlier no longer work because you don't have
the time and energy to micromanage like you do at first.
By the way, only a family member is safe from rebellions, and they
are very nasty. Even if you win against the rebellion, you are now so
weak that you get attacked by the contries around you immediately.
I only promote my own sons to princes unless I have a daughter to marry
    into the newly promoted noble.
Yes the seasons are very important, as in really life all kinds of
decisions are made accordingly. Your townspeople pay taxes in the
spring, your farmers reap food in the fall, you feed everyone in the
spring, and you pay your soldiers in the spring. If a country is
giving yours tribute, it arrives in the Winter, and often you are so
busy trying to do everything that you only have time to go to war
in the Summer. Or if your artiszans have produced to the max, you give
their stuff to the people to raise morale in the Summer or their
efforts go to waste (or sell it if you can contact someone to buy it.)
I could go on for hours. I still have not won the world conquest
section yet, and I am playing at the easiest level. (I cannot immagine
how this game could possibly be harder and you could still win!)
The Battles are an art in themselves. I reminds me of the end game
to chess with a king, a rook, and a knight. Position is very important
and where you need to be and what you need to do is always changing.
I have played "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" and while it is ok,
it is not as good, though it did have certain aspects that I liked.
I would love for some of you to buy this game also, I could sure
use all the help I can get.

If I can ever get it, I will. Every time I try to pick one up
I wind up being too late - last one sold yesterday, new shipment
    coming in next week, etc.

I've still got "Romance" (couldn't sell it, probably just as
well) and might go through it again. But if I get a "Genghis"
I'll be looking for tips from you!

387.6Addictive as all get out...WYVERN::COMEFORDRemeber, only YOU can prevent Flying Logos!Wed Sep 05 1990 15:3227
I just got this and it is heavily addictive (last time I got this addicted to a
game was when I ran into EMPIRE on the DEC-20 where I went to school).
Strategies so far ( I won't call them tips, because I'm not sure they are
useful, or that they aren't patently obvious)

1) If you plan to do something dangerous/stupid (like attack a neighbor)
   save before going on.

2) Sometimes (fall especially?) you will find one trader selling something
cheap and another buying at 2-3 times the price in the same season. This
is a great way to raise some quick cash (though it takes 2 moves so isn't
   cheap).

3) Try to make treaties so only one person at a time is your enemy.
Otherwise all your neighbors will come whipping in when you go off
   to war...

That's it so far after 3-4 evenings. This one looks well worth its 60$+ price
tag. One problem I see is that all my neighbors in the Mongol conquest are
growing LOTS faster than I am, I suppose I could shift everyone mostly out of
the army for a couple years, but If I've got treaties with the neighbors why
wouldn't they do the same leaving me still fairly even with them...

I picked up "Genghis" this weekend. I'm already addicted.

What's fascinating about it is the complexity. There are so
many possibilities - so many ways to do well and so many ways
to go belly-up. I confess I have been heavily relying on
the save/reset strategy so far, but I consider I'm in the
training mode. It just takes so long to work out a successful
    strategy.

Question for the more experienced players: what happens when
your main man dies? My guy is in his seventies now and can't
last much longer. Does the morale and such go down? And
how do you prevent the "someone is trashing the town and
castle" problem? I've figured out how to fix it but not
    how to prevent it.

Has anyone actually beaten this game - that is, started with
"Mongol Conquest" scenario and completed "World Conquest"
    scenario?

Frankly, it seems to me to be all but impossible because
when Genghis Khan dies, the game is over. You lose. And
though he tends to live a nice long life the task you have
to perform - conquer all 14 mongol states and then conquer
the 24 countries of europe, asia, n. africa - seems impossible
to achieve within those time limits.

I'd sure like to hear about it if someone has done it. I'll
keep trying but to date, this is by far the toughest game
    I've ever played.

387.9Start a dynasty...WYVERN::COMEFORDRemeber, only YOU can prevent Flying Logos!Wed Oct 24 1990 16:0214
It looks from the instructions that if you
(Ghengis/whoever) kick the bucket, and you have
a son old enough to be a prince, who is NOT a prince
then you continue the game as him. So far I haven't
even conquered the mongol conquest (though I'm closing
on it with 6 or seven provinces mine) so Ghengis hasn't
gotten old enough for this to be a problem (I think he
is about 39 as it is about 1190). This is my third
restart and I'm doing ok except for one of my princes
who goes to war and runs his territory into the
ground.

Thanks,
Keith

    How do they compare?

I have to say I like them both, but prefer Ghenghis. Probably
take several hundred lines to really say why... The brief
answer is that Genghis is richer and more complex.

You start with a 14-state Mongolia-only scenario and, when
you unite Mongolia, you move on to "the world." (Europe,
Northern Africa, SE Asia, and Asia, including Japan) Starting
at the beginning of the first scenaria and ending with the
world united - takes a long time and is difficult to achieve
without liberal use of the `save' and `reset' features.

If you're thinking of buying one or the other, I would
    definitely go with Genghis!
