330.0. "Disney's Ducktales?" by MORO::WHICKER_BI (We Love L.A.) Mon Oct 02 1989 19:00

Has anybody out there played the new DUCKTALES advaneture game?
I've seen it reviewed in the NINTENDO POWER magazine (along with
several pages of screens and hints) but haven't seen it in the
    stores yet...

I was super disappointed with Mickey Mousecapade even though the
Mickster is one og my all time favorites critters...

If anyone has had the opportunity to actually play the new
DUCKTALES game, please post your opinions so I don't go out and
    spend the bucks needlessly...

    Thanks!

I was looking at getting this for my 5 year old for x-mas. Did nintendo
power give it a good rating?? IS it recommended for older children?

330.2I'll Look It UpMORO::WHICKER_BIWe Love L.A.Wed Nov 29 1989 22:505
I'll see if I can find the magazine, and let you know the ratings,
etc. I don't usually throw reading material away, so it has to
    be around here somewhere...but where, w h e r e, W H E R E ? ? ?

330.3Found the MagazineMORO::WHICKER_BIWe Love L.A.Thu Nov 30 1989 01:4922
Well, I found the Nintendo POWRER magazine containing the details
on Duck Tales. Its a 12 page spread in the Sept./Oct. '89 edition.
You'll recognize it if you see it 'cause it has Scrooge himself
    on the cover.

I couldn't find any reference to ratings, but according to someone
who has the game, there are three levels: easy, medium, and difficult.
I've seen tha game described as "Link-like", meaning that the player
goes out on an adventure, picking up treasures and useful items
    along the way...

By the way, a good game for youngsters (and I mean YOUNG) is the
Mickey Mousecapade. The screens are fairly simple but varied enough
to keep a little one's attention, and there are three 'worlds' to
    choose from...

If you end up getting the Duck Tales game, would you post your opinions
and experiences here? We'd sure appreciate it!

    Regards,
      BW

We just bought Ducktales, but it's marked "Do not Open 'til Christmas"....
But, once we get it unwrapped, I'll post an opinion if it's still
needed....

My son rented this game last evening. He seemed to enjoy it and would
give it a positive rating. He solved it before bedtime. I haven't
asked him if he'd buy it but it wasn't a *have to get* at breakfast.
BTW he's 15 years old, goes to bed a 9:00 lights & TV off at 10:00.

Not seeing a note for this game yet, I thought I'd enter one. Duck
Tales is a game based on the cartoon show that is seen on independent
stations. It's about Scrooge McDuck and his three nephews in their
never ending search for more money.

The pack has five scenarios one must manuver through in order to win.
They are the Amazon, the Moon, Transylvania, the African Mines and the
Himilayas(sp?). For the African Mines one has to find a key in Transylvania
before being allowed to go to far.

Scrooge can travel either by walking or pogo jumping on his cane. If
he crosses an inanimate object, he can use the cane like a golf club
to propel the object out of the way, or better yet, into a bad guy.
About halfway through each scene, one will find Scrooge's helicopter
pilot friend (flight top?) who will bring him back to the beginning of
the stage. This allows Scrooge to collect more money. But be careful,
one is timed for each stage.

One picks up free lifes by finding a duck doll, and recharges the life
meter a little by eating ice cream, or recharges completely by eating
a cake. There are also special object (coins?) one can find that will
make Scrooge invincible for a few seconds.

Graphics are great. Haven't seen screen break up yet when there' been
a lot of characters on screen, only slow down. Character control is
fairly easy. The pogo jumping is a little hard to get mastered, but is
an interesting twist to traveling once done. The game comes with three
levels. Easy, normal, and difficult. I've been able to make it to the
end of the first stage in easy mode, and only about half way on the
other modes. No password, or continue option. Bummer. Also, until
you pass the halfway mark, when you die you go all the way back to the
beginning. When you die past the halfway mark, you go back there.

Price was $44.95 at Kaybee in Leominster a week ago, and yes I got the
last copy. I'd recommend this one to anyone who likes SMBII type of games.
Good for a little older kids. If their able to handle the SMB games, then
they should be okay with this one. I'd give this one a solid 8. I
would have rated it higher if not for the returning to the beginning
and the no password/continue option. I don't think you'll be sorry you
    spent your money.

I was looking at note #330 on the Disney Ducktails and there was
no response to the game. Has anybody rented or bought DuckTails?
If so would you recommend it for a 5 year old? I know it's fairly
new, but Toys "R" Us just got it in and was wondering if it's tailored
for the younger ages. Any info as to the write ups in Nintendo Power
    would be helpful.

There was a fantastic write up of Duck Tales in the Nintendo POWER
Magazine a couple of months ago. They included maps, layout,
explanations of the charcters, strengths, weaknesses, etc.

If you can get hold of a copy, it will give you quite a "demo"
of what the game will be like...

I'm hoping to get Duck Tales for Christmas! We'll have to wait
and see just how generous Santa is this year!

    Have fun!!

    Excellent Game

I got ducktales from K-Mart in Nashua, it was the last one.

The graphics on the game are some of the best I've seen. The characters
are very colorful. It's a lot like super mario bros, except you can go
left to right, then back to the left...so it's not all in one
    direction.

330.10I liked DuckTales...BRAT::SMITHNever say never, I always say.Tue Dec 26 1989 12:5329

My daughter received DuckTales for Christmas (Toys "R" Us in
Manchester had probably 30+ of them last week). We're fairly
new to Nintendo, but from what I've seen, I'd rate this game
better than average. I guess this game would be catagorized
as an Action/Adventure type. There are assorted creatures
that threaten you as you travel through the five different
areas in search of the treasure for that area. I think there
may be a mini-boss in each section. I ran into a particular
one a few times, but he kept snuffing me out. I don't know
yet if I need a particular item with me to waste him, or if
I'm just still too novice with the controller to beat him.
On the Moon, I found a key (for the UFO) and the Remote Con-
trol (to operate Gizmo-Duck), but I haven't discovered where
to use those items yet. Anyway, the whole adventure is quite
varied, mainly due to the five different places you can go.
This, I think, greatly reduces the potential of the game to
become monotonous. The graphics seem very good (and the colors
are bright and distinct). When Scrooge whacks something that
doesn't move with his cane, you can see his head vibrate from
the impact. The sound/music is okay, although I'm not familiar
enough with Nintendo to "grade" it relative to other games. As
previously mentioned, the feature/bug of bringing you way back
after dying, is somewhat frustrating. At Toys "R" Us, the game
costs $45, and it's designed by Capcom.

330.11Hint needed for Himalaya's BossBRAT::SMITHNever say never, I always say.Thu Jan 04 1990 12:3115
    	re: .5

Your son solved DuckTales in one evening before bedtime?
That's impressive (to me anyway)! If you don't mind, would
you ask him for a hint on wasting the Himalaya's Boss (if
he remembers)? So far, it seems the only way for me to
eliminate things is to "pogo" on top of them. But I can't
pogo on the Himalaya Boss because we're on snow. Maybe I
need some magical thing that will allow me to pogo on the
snow...? If anyone else out there knows, I'll take a hint
    	from you. Thanks.

330.12nothing special to itDUGGAN::WILLINGERFri Jan 05 1990 20:2320
Sorry, but you're going to have to "pogo" the icy bugger to beat him.

You'll probably want at least 5 full red balls of life when you go get
the Himalaya boss. Just wait till he stops bouncing for a moment, then
jump up and come down on top of him with your pogo sticking down.
You'll bounce off and land in the snow. In the process, you'll
probably take a hit either from touching him, or getting struck by a
falling snowball. That's why it's safe to have 5 balls. Five hits and
    he's history!

My 9 year old son did it first, then my wife, then my 6 year old
daughter. They've all finished the game, at least at the EASY level.
I just watch. It probably is a bit harder than it looks ;^)

If you haven't found all the secret treasures in the Himalayas, like
the extra life and saving Bubba Duck, you may want to explore a bit
more before you beat the boss.

Thanks for the tip! My lack of NES experience was definitely
showing. I have been able to snuff the other 4 Bosses, however,
so now with your help maybe I can beat this game. Thanks again.

    [possible spoiler]
If you exit the spaceship at the original entrance, you'll come down
the rope and have no way to avoid falling in the pit! Use the back
    entrance instead.

You then need to go as far right as you can go - which will require you
to hop across the chasm on the floating rock. If you can do that, the
    rest is easy.

My son is the expert on this, but I have watched him quite a bit.
You have to get Gizmo Ducks' remote control from the space ship and
then go back to the surface of the moon. Continue to your right. When
you reach a wall Gizmo Duck will appear and blast it. You can then
proceed. I usually leave the room somewhere in here. Some how you get
below the surface of the moon. I believe that is where you fight the
king rat??? and the secret treasure, green cheese (what did you
    expect?) will appear.

I played the game and found it rather EASY. I beat finished it within
an hour. But I would recommend it to kids who like the show DuckTales.
I would give it a 3.5 for challenge, but a 8.5 for enjoyment.
