263.0. "JOHN ELWAYS FOOTBALL" by SALEM::DGOSSELIN () Mon Apr 24 1989 20:23

    I was told JOHN ELWAY'S FOOTBALL is now available! has anyone
    got one yet? If so, how was it and how does it compare to
    Tecmo?

    I've been playing Tecmo, I find it rather easy! on the opening
    kickoff I ran it back! I was surprised!

    Wait till you get to TECMO BOWL or at least to the playoffs. You
    won't run many kickoffs back.

    Try the Bears, Niners, or Raiders.

    I have been playing Tecmo bowl for about a month and it took me
    about 2 weeks to get to the final game. I played with Cleveland
    as well and found out that they seemed to be the best all around
    team. I think you will find though as you continue playing the games
    get more difficult. I played Chicago in Tecmo Bowl and had to play
    them 3 times before beating them. I think you will find it challenging
    if you play the entire season. I have not tried John Elway's, but
    the review of these two games seemed to side with Tecmo Bowl. The
    only thing I do not like are the limited play selections on offense
    and defense. Overall much, much better than 10 yard fight!

    No Jets in Tecmo Bowl...I guess they were too powerful.

Well, since I asked this in the TECMO BOWL note, I'll ask the samething
here. Can someone please list the teams that are supplied with this
game?

Thanks,
Mike
263.6TECMO VS ELWAYSALEM::DGOSSELINThu May 04 1989 17:5216
    I rented John Elways football last night! the graphics aren't as
    good as Tecmo! I feel it's a totally different game! For one
    the game is played on a vertical sceen! Tecmo is on a Horizontal
    screen. For passing plays you have to choose a passing play and
    by hitting the B button, as you hit the B button and arrow curser
    shows up by the QB, you then have to move the curser via the control
    pad to the receiver that you want! and you have to do this in about
    2 seconds! there are much more plays to choose from but for my
    money I would stick to Tecmo!

    p.s you were right about it getting tougher the longer the season
          goes on! I HATE DALLAS! they scored with seconds left to
    take a 1 point win!! ARRRGGHHHHH!

    Two questions:

    On J.Elway Football, do you get to play defense as well as offense?

    Has anyone tried out NFL Football yet? My nephew tells me his friend
    has it so it must be out.

Yes, you play both offense and defense with J. Elway Football

    Ya know, I took one look at that box with Mr. Ed's picture on it
    and just walked away....nearly blew chunks. It may not be any
    reflection on the game, but I see more pictures of Elway since I
    moved here than I can stomach.

263.10TECMO the way to goCPDW::BRYANTL.U.C.K.=Labor Under Controlled KnowledgeWed May 10 1989 20:0113
    Having played both TECMO and John Elway I will lend out some free
    advice. Stick with Tecmo! John Elway does not beat TECMO in any
    category. The graphics are terrible, you can't control the receivers
    before they catch the ball (no matter where John throws the ball, some
    receiver will usually make the catch). Also, when played with two
    people, it is too easy to see what the other player is going to do. At
    least in TECMO there is some secrecy as to what play you select. One
    other thing, if you can believe it, the computer stinks!! The first
    time I played I one 49-7. The only time he scored was when I went for
    the interception on the last play of the half and got toasted.

    To sum all of that up, in opinion, renting John Elway for a day will
    show you what you are missing (or aren't in this case).
263.11Is this THE way??DEMING::TOPELTue Jun 06 1989 16:3321

    From the neg votes, it appears I "bought" the wrong one..........

    Regardless - does anyone know if these are standard:
      1) If you're playing it one on one, that "it" will not punt under
         any conditions, (example: it is forth down and "it" has 42
         to go (or any number of yards) and it will go for it - not
         punt). Is this the only game that goes for it on it's own
         five yard line???????

      2) On offense, if "normal" mode is picked, if on a pass play,
         who ever catches it takes off at a speed ten times that of
         anyone else - seems to be confined to the "normal" mode.

    thanks
    Dan

    RE:-.1
    	The computer does NOT know the meaning of the word punt! This is
    one of the major reasons I dislike the game.
    	I don't know about the answer to question two. I was lucky to have
    rented the game before buying it! Whew!!
