218.0. "RoboWarrior by Jaleco!" by DNEAST::DUMAIS_BOB () Mon Feb 27 1989 14:47

Got this game this weekend. Anyone else out there have or seen it?
The game is by Jaleco and the instructions are 36 pages long! This discussion
is fairly long so please bare with me. Here's the game story, weapons and
play along with a few observations.

	The Legend of Altile...

In the distant future, overpopulation and pollution have plunged
planet Earth into near ruin. World leaders have no way to solve the crisis, so
they turn to Altile, a very wise scientist for possible answers. Altile is a
genius and after a short period of thought, devises a plan to rid Earth of
this terrible curse.
In the year 2395 Earth's scientists and engineers follow Altile's plans
and construct an artificial planet in the far reaches of the galaxy that will
be home to a portion of the overpopulated Earth's people.
All the people of Earth work together to complete and colonize the
artificial planet. Unfortunately, Altile dies shortly after crafting his plans
for the new world, and never sees his dreams come true. So, in his memory,
the people name the planet Altile.
Besides providing a new and peaceful home for the people of Earth, the
new planet also unites the nations of the Earth. Thoughts of war disappear and
the half-man/half-machine RoboWarriors, who have defended the Earth for so
long, are deactivated, and the two planets, Earth and Altile exist in
harmony.

	The Aliens Invade

But in the year 2036 A.A. (After Altile), led by their ruthless
dictator Xur, the Xantho Empire from another dimension invade Altile,
deactivating its specially constructed weather-control system and plunging the
peace loving people of Altile into bitter cold. The Xantho aliens transform
the surface of the beautiful green planet into barren brown wasteland for their
own diabolical uses.
The inhabitants of Altile flee underground to escape the frigid
temperatures that the Xantho Empire have inflicted on their planet. Before
leaving, however, they send a message to their sister planet Earth begging
for help. Although the Xanthos are cruel, the brave people of Altile vow
never to surrender.

	Help Arrives

The Earth scientists receive the Altile plea and quickly reactivate the
Z-type Earth Defense cyborg (ZED), the most powerful of all RoboWarriors.
They ready ZED for combat, preparing their fastest spaceship to send him
across the galaxy to Altile.
ZED lands in Landor on Altile, far from the alien Xantho main invasion
force, yet he can see the terrible destruction Xur and his Xantho Empire have
inflicted upon Altile--green plants withered, beautiful birds and animals
gone. ZED knows he has to reach the weather-control station, but it's feared
that Xur himself commands the vital base. Before disappearing underground the
people of Altile have left many assorted energy capsules hidden on the surface
of their planet. These energy capsules not only increase the fighting
abilities of the RoboWarrior, but other special functions as well. ZED knows
he must find the capsules to topple the Xanthos and restore freedom to Altile.

	World of Wonder

As you will discover Altile is a magical land filled with wonderful
surprises and plenty of challenges. You'll encounter dozens of strange aliens
and see fantastic sights as you guide Zed on his quest above and below the
surface of Altile. On your way to a final confrontation with Xur, you must
use all your weapons and bombs to uncover the secret powers left by the people
of Altile in order to help defeat the lords of Xanthos. It's a dangerous
mission, but tremendous rewards await ZED and the people of Altile should you
succeed.

	The Game

You are initially dropped into an area with bombs, an energy tank and a

missile. This area does not scroll as the others. It's called the cyborg
training area. There are two screens to deal with. A main screen where the
landscape scrolls from right to left as ZED moves right, and a sub screen
where you can select special weapons and powers. Zed is equipped with two
regular weapons. One are bombs and the other is his ray gun. The bombs can
destroy bricks, trees, and aliens but if ZED is standing too close to them
when they blow up, he will receive great damage and may even be destroyed.
The ray gun destroys most enemies but some take more than one blast to destroy.
There are eight different levels of defensive power which are controlled by the
amount of score you have accrued. There are eight levels which must be
explored to complete the game. I think there are 27 areas to explore including
undergrounds and special rooms.

	Game Items

All the game items which are listed here are selected by the sub screen
and some of the items do not last forever i.e. the clock lasts for 10
seconds etc...

Candle, used underground and lights up a small area around ZED for a
	period of time.

Energy capsule, used to restore ZED's energy. The energy level of ZED
continually drops with time. If the energy level expires Zed dies.

Clock, used to stop all objects on the screen for 10 seconds.

Super Boots, used to make ZED move faster for 20 seconds.

Missile, a mighty weapon which has great range and destroys everything
	in its path.

Flash, used to destroy all enemies on the screen.

Crossfire, used to enable ZED to fire his laser in four directions at
once and lasts for 35 seconds.

Megaton Bomb, most powerful weapon will destroy all enemies and blocks
	which are on the screen.

Lamp, is more powerful than the candle and should be used in above
	ground stages that are dark.

There is one more item in the Sub Screen which I haven't got figured out yet
that is a P which the instructions say increase the length of ZED's laser.
I don't know why it is contained in the sub screen to select.

There are other items which help ZED on his quest. One which I haven't
found is the life vest. This vest allows Zed to float in the water for 20
seconds. I don't see a space for this item in the sub screen so I don't know
how this item is used or if it can be selected. I have made it to a place
where I need this vest to get across an area of water. No luck so far in
finding it.

	Other Items

Bombs, gives Zed ten extra bombs when collected.

Energy Pods, restores ZED's energy by four when collected.

Barrier Shield, gives ZED invincibility for 15 seconds from all
enemies and his own bomb blasts. Zed will destroy the aliens if he
	runs into them.

Magical Bee, will give ZED one of the Special Powers, Candle,
Energy, Missile, Super Boots, Clock, Cross Fire.

Medal, used to buy special powers in stores.

Chalice, I believe there is only one of these in the first level and
it is used to enable ZED to continue to other levels.

Key, a special key is hidden at the extreme right of each stage and is
used to allow exit from that stage.

	Special Places

There are several areas which are of special interest which are in the
game but not easy to gain entrance.

Well of Hope, a special area of water that doubles ZED,s bombs and
special powers in the sub screen.

Room of Idols, a special sanctuary where ZED must destroy statues in
the correct order to receive special weapons.

Shops, where ZED can purchase special weapons if he has collected
	enough medals.

So far I've gotten through two stages. I am having problems with the
third stage because I need to cross water and I haven't found the vest yet.
I think this game was well worth the $40.00. I offer this note as a conference
to all who may have questions or offer info about this game.

218.3Help I'm trapped!SPUD::GAYFSun Mar 12 1989 18:1311
How do I get thru period 2-1. This is the area where you can only
go so far to the right (after crossing the river) and you run into
a stone wall. I get that far, have found the secret room off the
top of it with the three statues but once the screen scrolls to
the right so that the river is no longer showing, I get trapped
there. I have bombed everywhere in that area (which is how I discovered
the secret room at the top) but to no avail. Direct spoilers are
appreciated. Want no hint.. I want out of this area! Help!

    Thanks..
    Frank
218.4Period 2-1 Wall SpoilerDNEAST::DUMAIS_BOBMon Mar 13 1989 10:3417
	Hi Frank,

I can help you through 2-1. I have a question first, about the hidden
room (Idol Room) which you found. Were you able to get the lamp? You will
need it in the next world. To get the lamp you must destroy the statues in the
correct order. O.K.

	Period 2-1 Wall Spoiler To Follow;

You must bomb the wall three times in the correct spot. The opening is
hidden at the fourth tree down from the top if you look on the other side of
the wall. Let me know if this helps.

218.5Thanks.. On my way now.SPUD::GAYFWed Mar 15 1989 12:3716
Thanks Bob! That did the trick.. I am now cruising along in 4-2.
Its just too bad that the game does not have a password save feature.
I would like to see the Nintendo folks set some sort of standard
that says if the game is of a certain complexity and cannot be finished
by the average player (1-2 hours maybe?) there should be a password
save feature. I know that the word average is very hard to define,
as there are some "average" kids who could probably go thru Robowarrior
in a couple of hours, but we big kids have a bit more pain to face.
The password feature would definitely help us out.
I guess the biggest pain is having to tie up the game system for
a couple of days until the game is completed. I went thru this with
Rygar, and needless to say, the rest of the family was not all too
happy with it. Certainly don't want to go thru that scenario again
    with Robowarrior.

    Frank.

Just picked this game up last night, looks pretty good.Havent
gotten past 1-1 yet,but I've only put a couple of hours in so
far.One question, how do you use the Well of Hope I think its
called? The booklet says to bomb a certain side a few times.Any
idea how many bombs it takes?I dont want to use up too many
bombs on the wrong side of the well. That stone square with the
water in the middle is a well, isnt it?

218.7Well of Hope Spoiler!DNEAST::DUMAIS_BOBThu Mar 16 1989 00:1014
	Hi Mike,

I have kept a log of pertinent information on this game. Here is the
scoop on the well of hope in period 1-1.

	spoiler

You must bomb the right side in the middle 5 times. Once you enter the
well all you bombs will be doubled i.e. if you have 20 bombs you will get 40
when entering the well. All items in the sub screen will be doubled.

	Good luck

     Thank's Bob,
maybe that will help me get through period 1-1.Spent a few more
hour's at it last night, but havent gotten out of the Fringes yet.I
usually run out of time.Any hint's you might have would be appreciated.
I havent come this close to throwing my Advantage through the T.V.
    since playing Metroid!

218.9Energize Me!SPUD::GAYFThu Mar 16 1989 15:2521
    Mike,
I don't think its time that you run out of more than it is energy.
I have found that by going underground with a couple of boots and
a couple of candles in my inventory, I could (usually) pick up 2
or 3 energizers (they look like shields with an "E" on them.) They
are very important in keeping ones character alive. Once you have
a couple of these, and your energy level gets low, just go to the
subscreen select an energizer and come back to the play screen and
hit the "A" button. That will activate whatever you have chosen
from the subscreen. In this case it will restore your character
to full power. Usually, the little nasties that run around the screen
are not all that damaging, but in later screens there are these
little meanies that launch missles at you, and 2 hits on those and
thats all she wrote. If your power is being drained off slowly and
it gets too low, you will hear a beeping sound.. Time to go get
energized, but if your power is somewhat low already and you get
hit with a missle.. you die without warning or a chance to recharge
    your energy.

    Frank

    Thanks,
I've been picking up energizers but have been listening to
the stereo with the T.V. turned down.By the time I realize I'm
low on energy,it's usually too late.I'll try it tonight with
the stereo off so I can hear the low energy warning and switch
to the subscreen in time.Hopefully I'll get out of 1-1 tonight.

                                                                   Mike
218.11Memory and quickness!DNEAST::DUMAIS_BOBThu Mar 16 1989 18:0819
The problem I found that I had in playing the game is that I always
ended up doing myself in with the bombs "I" put down! I either put them in a
place that I couldn't get far enough away from or I put them where I didn't
expect for them to drop. It seems that the enemies that come at you try to
push you into the bombs that you lay down. Especially the jelly guys that
take allot of hits to do away with. One thing to think about is that most
enemies come from the right of the screen.
The damage the bombs do is 10 times worse than getting hit by enemies
or their weapons. The exception to this may be the enemy who shoots the
missile. When you get more points ("level" in sub-screen goes up) the damage
inflicted by enemies and bombs you place lessens.
In the beginning it is a good idea to go down if you have enough
candles. I have even gone down and tried to cover all the territory of the
underground to get the energy pods and small energy capsules(looks like a
double A battery). I have memorized the exit locations so I can get out when I
need to. Remember the more stuff you have when entering the well of hope the
better off you will be later on.
	Good Luck!
	Bob

bombing yourself.Thats how I lost it at the end,got pushed into
a bomb.Lots of enemies at the wall!I try to go underground too,

218.13Period 1-1 EXIT!DNEAST::DUMAIS_BOBFri Mar 17 1989 11:3721
	Hi Mike,

Yes you need the Key to get out of any period. Some periods do not
have chalices but all have keys. Once you get the key you will see the EXIT
typed on the screen. All exits are at the top. Most of the keys are near the
end where the screen stops scrolling. The technique I use at the end of
most periods is;

	Possible Spoiler

Use the clock to stop the enemies from coming. Take care that you
don't bump into the enemies because they still cause damage. You can blast
them with your gun or with bombs. clear all trees etc. on the screen
with your bombs. You will find the key hidden under a tree.

	Have Fun!

weekend, good chance to put some serious hour's in.Later,

Made it to period 2-2 Saterday but didnt have any lanterns!I ended
up resetting the game si I could try and find a lamp.No luck yet,but
I did find the Temple room.I got a megaton bomb but couldnt find
a lantern. How do you purchase items in the shop?I know I had enough
medals to buy something, but couldnt couldnt get it to work. How can
you tell how many medals youve got?The only place I've seen them
is in the shop, the symbol for them with a multiplication sign and
    a number.If that is the # of medals acumulated,then I'm confusing
them with something else when I grab them.Hints appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,

                        Mike

	Hi Mike,

One of the Idol Rooms contains a lamp. You need to destroy the Idols
in the correct order to get the lamp. I believe that the lamp is in period
2-1. If you want the correct sequence let me know. In the Item Rooms I
usually purchase the lamp.

To buy something in the Item Room move over it and press the A button.
the cost for the item will be deducted from the medal count total you have
accumulated.

	Mild spoiler period 2-2

One note of caution when going through 2-2, Don't go down the first
set of stairs if you have used the lamp. Use candles until you go down and come
back up. Then use the lamp for the rest of the world.
