183.0. "Mickey Mousecapade" by HBO::BLAISDELL (Can't think of anything) Fri Jan 06 1989 15:32

Got this for our 4-year old this Christmas. I had been looking
a long time for a game that would be easy and fun for him and thought
that this might fit the bill.

Briefly, the game consists of 5 stages.

The Fun House - Mickey and Minnie hunt through a house with
many rooms for stars and keys needed to
                            progress to other stages.
The Ocean - Linear path battling birds and reptiles while
                            avoiding energy-sapping waves.
The Woods - Go through Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter in
                            a forest maze.
The Pirate Ship- Deal with nasty pirates to get to next stage
The Castle - Similiar to the fun house in that you must hunt
for items in many rooms while battling nasties.

Now my opinion. The game stinks! It is much too difficult for an
adult let alone a 4 year old. The fun house section isn't too bad, in
fact I was pleased with the game until I saw what the other stages were
like. The ocean requires quite a bit of dexterity and luck to get
through. The woods is an annoying stage because it is impossible or
very difficult to find your way from fall to winter (I've been trying
for several days now). The Pirate Ship can be had but after a lot of
frustration and practice. The Castle requires pure luck to get through.

If Mickey croaks while in the fun house or castle, you restart in the
bottom room of the screen you were in. That could mean that you have to
retravel through many rooms to get back to where you were. All in all,
this game more than any other game has frustrated me the most. I was
very disappointed that it wasn't a little easier so my kid could play
     it.

183.1Spoiler help for woodsHBO::BLAISDELLCan't think of anythingFri Jan 06 1989 15:3326
A spoiler request to anyone that has had the displeasure of playing
    this annoying game.

How do you get to Winter in the Woods stage???? What I've tried
so far is hidden behind the formfeed.

After easily finding summer and fall, I've tried
every single door in the fall and cannot get to winter.
There are three trees with doors, prior to getting to the
next start sign. One door takes me back to Spring, another
door takes me back to Summer, and the other door takes me
back to start in Fall. I tried going all the way through
and to the next start sign, then trying the three doors
again, and get the same results. Believe me, I've tried
every combination and can't get through and I've had experience
playing maze games like Gauntlet and had no problems!

Thanks in advance,

   -rick

183.2OK for 6+, I thinkVOLKS::COOLIDGEBayard, VAX CSSE DTN 240-6493 AET1-1/6Fri Jan 06 1989 19:1313

We obtained this for our two kids (daughter 7, son 5.5), and our
son enjoys it immensely. It's a little easier for him to understand
than SMB (where he tends to overlook coins and hidden blocks), and
the frustration level isn't quite as high. He's watched the adults
plow through to the ocean scene, and seen us play a little with
the other scenes, and is content so far.

My wife and I are very experienced with SMB and Zelda, so when we
started experimenting with the Woods, we were rather baffled as
it simply doesn't make sense. Yes, overall, this game is a bit
simplistic compared to SMB, but it's just right for the intended
    audience, I think.

Well, as I pointed out a few notes ago (maybe a reply?), my 3.5 yr old
wanted it. It sure isn't a game for smaller children!

I know how to get to the Winter scene. In the second Fall
there is a tree with a hidden tunnel. You have to shoot
at the bottom of the tree and jump while you shoot. It'll
    look like water splashing...

Well David (the 6 year old who writes like a 30 year old), thank
you very much for the spoiler answer! The game is less frustrating
now. However, it still doesn't change my opinion of the game. More
on that after the formfeed later since much of the discussion will
  be spoiler related.

My 4 year old always wants to play Super Mario Brothers over Mickey
because he tells me it is easier to play. To find out if this was
true, I started to play Mousecapade and discovered he was correct.
That is what got me irritated with this game.

Ah, the hidden door in the tree trick. Wouldn't it have been nice
to have been adequately taught this trick in the fun house where the
same technique can be used. I always wondered what the "splash" was
when you fired the stars at certain parts of the wall in the fun house.
I used to toss 7-8 stars at it before getting tired and moving on. If
I had just sat there and fired 10 stars at it, I would have seen the
hidden items appear! Sorry, but that is poor game design. 3-4 shots
should be enough to uncover the items.
Now I can tell my nieces about the trick. They are 9 and 11 years
old and after playing the game for two weeks, hadn't discovered the
technique either and were stuck in the woods. The instruction booklet
  wasn't particularly helpful either.

183.6RENT THIS ONE FIRST.FSTTOO::RATHBURNWed Jan 18 1989 16:0611
We rented the Mickey game this week and find it very
frustrating. The only game you have a reasonable chance
in is the Fun house. This is because its the only one
that you can effectivly avoid your enemies. The enemies
come at you in bunches, and you cannot avoid them.
We wont buy this game and I recommend that anyone
should at first rent before buying. Mario Brothers
and Zelda are 10's. Mickey ia a -10.

I found it at Bradlees just before Christmas. I think it was $34.95.
At the time, I couldn't find it anywhere else. It was advertised
at Childworld, but none of the three stores I went to had it.
