124.0. "STAR FORCE" by SCOMAN::PHILLIPS () Tue Aug 30 1988 20:54

I've been playing Tecmo's STAR FORCE a lot lately, and feel I have
a few useful tips to pass on:

    1. A good scoring opportunity comes in Area A, when the first LARIOS
fortress appears. Move to the upper center as the core appears.
When the core lights, fire immediately - and don't chicken out
by evading the oncoming section. If you place eight shots, you
will get 50,000 instead of 1,000.

    2. The MEEUWS ships have a special way of maneuvering; they come
to your level then turn 90 degrees. Moving up or down will
often get you past them safely.

    3. The ALPHA TARGET and all subsequent targets (BETA, GAMMA, etc.)
are easy to destroy. When you hear the fanfare, move to the
middle of the screen. The target will appear, then it will
begin to move side to side. Thrust to the top, then pull back
as it returns. The side turrets will miss you every time, and
you can easily nail the target.

    4. The OBSESS splitting mines cause a lot of trouble for beginners.
I find the best way to get past them is to drop to the bottom
side, let them get halfway down the screen, then thrust to the
opposite side while firing. You usually have JUST enough speed
       to dodge the fragments.
    5. It doesn't state it in the manual, but you are awarded bonus
ships at 50,000 and 200,000 points. I don't know where the
next point bonus is, but it is somewhere beyond 492,300 (my
       current high score!)

Finally, the book offers a clue to finding the CLEOPATRA mask for
a huge point bonus (1,000,000 points!). I've not yet found any
definite clues, let alone the mask. How about it - any of you
    cosmic gunslingers found it yet?

I played the game in the arcade and then rented it, I liked
it in the arcade, but felt that the home version lacked somthing.
There is a Sega game very similar, and I think that it is by far
    a better game.

    				All this for just $19.95...

I don't know of a way to start off with more, but during play look
for the green squares with the ? in them. Try to shoot then all
as behind one of them is a smiling face which will give you an extra
ship. I have gotten up to theta (five levels deep) using this method
and along the way picked up 9 additional ships by zapping this ?'s.
