84.0. "RC PRO-AM Racing" by NEXUS::G_GEIGER () Sat Mar 26 1988 12:45

Got PRO-AM Racing last night. Very good game.

    Quick overview:

    32 diff. tracks
Tracks include, as obstacles, 3 other cars, oil slicks,
water puddles, rain clouds, barriers, and pop up walls.
You pick up, stickey tires, turbos, better engines, stars,
ammo (fun!), bombs, and letters (to spell NINTENDO).
Very easy to continue, just finish 3rd or better, but the
    tracks/cars/obstacles get tougher.
    RATE: 8 (solid)

Picked this one up yesterday, fun game. Takes a little while to
get used to the steering but you get used to it. I've only been able to make
it up to track eight so far. A tink a solid eight is a fiar rating.

BTW - I got it at Kay Bee's in the Pheasnt lane mall nashua Nh

Never seen the PRO-AM Racing. How's that different from the Red
Racer. Is it worth to own both ? ( I already has the Red Racer and
    the kids love it ).

    re: .5
I own both. I like PRO-AM racing more than the other. PRO-AM
has three different types of cars with about 20 different tracks.
And there are missles and bombs, water, road hazards, and three
other cars that are trying to win as well as you. And the style
of the course is different. In Rad Racer, you are given the position
of being behind the car. PRO-AM racing you follow the car/truck
around the track and when the road turns, it turns. In my opinion,
    PRO-AM is the better game.

    	I agree.

Pro Am is much better, it is faster, much faster that old R.R.

Plus, on pro am the cars don't fade and become blocky as they
    	get near you.

With 32 tracks and me only at 11...

Did you ever notice that on track 5 the yellow car suddenly
explodes with power and does at least 2 1/2 times faster than you,
thus winning the race?? It happens on about halfway around the
second lap. The yellow car also does that some other time later
    in the race. Strange.
I think it's really funny going around the track blowing your
horn when you run out of ammo. Every time I push it, I just crack
up laughing. Like there really going to get out of the way. I
    just think that's hysterical!!

J With a best of 78,695 and on the 14 track.

I've made it passed 14, you just have to keep out of the oil, or go
slow when you do hit it. After awhile you can memorize the course and usualy
stay out of the oil. of course the bombs and missles should be saved for the
last lap and then used to insure a 3rd place finish.

Thats right. I remember I had about 30 missels on that track,
and I blew away anyone who came by me. I finally made it past.
Now I'm up to 19th level and my high score is 89,060. Too bad
when you continue that the points aren't still kept. Did anyone
ever make it up to the actual cars (collecting the NINTENDO letters
twice)??? I made it past the first and then up to NINT. Oh, well,
    just gotta keep trying.....

I just got this game a couple of nights ago. It doesn't have all
the frills of most of the Nintendo games I've seen, but I think
it's a really good game. For me I think it's going to be the type of
game that I play when I get discouraged by all the others; I don't
really feel a "need" to get to the end like in most other games, because
each level looks very much like the one before it.

I get genuine satisfaction from getting a roll cage and ramming
    the suckers off the road!

So has anyone made it through all 32 screens? Do people still like
the game as much? I've gotten to about the 19th screen.

84.14This is great!HPSTEK::RHUFFTue Nov 01 1988 17:0228
I bought this game Saturday night, the 29th of Oct., in Fitchburg,
Ma. for $34.99. What a game! I own a couple of r.c. cars so this
game is right my alley! I spent the rest of Saturday night and
into Sunday morning playing this game. I was glad I could set my
clock back and get an extra hour! I made it to track 19 with a
score of 104,000. I even got the third car.

That yellow vehicle sure does move sometimes, but not in all the
races. This works to your advantage and against it. If you're
really losing then forget it. But if you are on a tough track and
keep ahead of the last car then it can work to your advantage.
You won't have to finish the whole track, just let the yellow car
go ahead and make sure you keep one behind you.

You have to obtain a letter every race if you want to get to the
third car before you get too high in the levels. If you lose a
race, you can continue on the same track and there is usually the
    next letter you need.

I also discovered that if you have a set of roll bars and you go
through an oil slick your car will not crash but just spin. If
you don't have the roll bars then you blow up.

I love the game and can't see how anyone can reach level 32! Level
    19 was incredible! Good luck!

I just got this game last night, so I'm a bit tired this
    morning...

Can anyone tell me why sometimes it lets you continue after
you've lost? Is it something I'm picking up? Some rounds
let me keep going several times...sometimes the game is really
    over.
84.163 cont by defaultSPUD::GAYFWed Feb 01 1989 11:465
From what I've found.. You get 3 continues in each game. You may
loose track of how many you've used.. but it is 3. This is the default
and as far as I know, has nothing to do with what you pick up or
    do during the game.

84.17Continues!DNEAST::DUMAIS_BOBFri Feb 03 1989 09:5714
Sorry for the contradiction but, there are two continues in R.C.
Pro Am. My son has been playing this game for a while now. He's gotten
to level 29 so far. I can't make it past 22. His high score is 180,520,
mines 160,130. He LOVES this game!
There is a time limit you must meet to be able to continue. You
will see this after you put in your name for high score if you've reached that
plateau, and/or after you get beaten by the three r.c.'s your racing with.
There will be a timer in the lower right portion of the screen counting down.
You must hit the start key before the timer runs out.
Your not doing anything wrong in picking up items. The continue is
just a feature of this game.

                       /Disadvantage\
My screen that I use for my Nintendo is kind of small. I can't
realy see the bottom corners. My question is, What does it do when
you get a skull (around track 17-18) ?
My friend has a "Max joystick." The turbo button doesn't work
too well but the control itself (steering) works great. It makes
it seem like you are actually moving a car and not something on
    the screen.
I find that it is easier not getting turned into a car and staying
at a jeep or the truck. With the car I feel I don't have much conrol.

    B Litchfield
My records about 150,000 (Track 19 without continue)
84.19Avoid the skullsHPSTEK::RHUFFTue Feb 07 1989 20:457
I think that if you hit a skull it takes away either one missile
or a couple of missiles. Not sure how many. The skulls do switch
back to stars so try to avoid the skulls until they turn to stars
    again.

84.20And Dad loves it too !DARTS::PELKEYIf my ancestors could see me now!Mon Feb 20 1989 17:1130
We picked this game up this weekend. BIG FUN !

    My first observation:

Almost impossible without the NES Advantage. As soon as we put
the Advantage in, things stared happening. (like winning races))

So far I'm only up to level 7, but who knows, with any luck, I'll
make it up as far as some of the other noters have.

I do have a few questions:

Is this note on PRO am, or RC PRO am, or is RC PRO am the only
"Pro Am" we're discussing here. (We have R.C. PRO Am and the notes
are fairly consistent in describing the game that we have...) If
there is PRO am and RC PRO am, what are the differences ?

When you use the Advantage stick, the Turbo stops the car. I guess
this is one of the games that you can't use the Turbo on ?

How do you graduate from a Truck to the eventual, speedster ?

My favs so far are 1: getting those little suckers behind you and bombing
them, 2: getting a roll cage and knock em off the track, and Top Fav
is getting a belly full of missles and pummel anything that gets
in front of you on the last lap !

    This is Big Fun !!

84.22Just one opinionHPSTEK::RHUFFWed Feb 22 1989 13:0810
I found that it was easier to use the stock joysticks that come
with the Nintendo set. I guess it's a matter of preference.
About getting another speedster, you have to spell out the word
NINTENDO. You pick up a letter each race. You will find these
    letters along the track somewhere.
As you get better in the game you will want to start saving your
missiles for later races where you will need them more just to win.

I'm up to level 14. (Oil slicks at these levels are a real drag.
Avoiding them is for sure the best trick, but it's still tuff.)

Like secret codes to get you to different levels, or different
cars, or tracks with out oil slicks ???

Or how bout advice to get around, or life with oil slicks..

I get up to like level 19 or 22 now, and loose due to cccccccrashing
up from an oil slick spin out...

84.25all I know ofHPSTEK::RHUFFFri Mar 31 1989 19:437
I have found that getting a set of roll bars helps. This way you
only spin out and don't crash. I feel that this saves some time
during the race. Other than that you will have to learn the tracks
and also learn where the oil slicks are so you can avoid them.
