1242.0. "Mathematics on a chip" by OKYAH::VANVUREN (Johannes van Vuren, London UK) Mon May 21 1990 12:45

Have anyone any experience in using the new Hewlett-Packard HP 48SX
palmtop computer? Its maths competency is quite unique, unless you
tell me there is something better on the market.
If there are many users of this machine in Digital, perhaps we can
start a note in this conf (or a conf on its own) on this remarkable
    piece of work.

    Re .0:

A conference on Hewlett-Packard calculators exists at
PLDVAX::HP_CALCULATORS. Discussion of the HP-48SX is in topic 103.
Several people within Digital have them already, including me.

For other Math participants: The HP-48 has symbolic algebra and
differentiation, some symbolic integration and equation solving as well
as general numeric integration and solving and lots of other nifty
features: rectangular plots, polar plots, finding intersections and
roots on plots, integrating marked areas on plots, enhanced unit
handling. (E.g., add 3 meters to 2 feet and the result is
automatically converted to the latter unit -- units can be multiplied,
exponentiated, et cetera, and are carried along with numbers in
arithmetic operations and even algebraic expressions, and conversions
are performed automatically between simple and compound units.)

	"goddies"?

	I didn't realize they had a religious significance. ;-)

The old HP-28S is around $185 from mail-order discount places (Educalc,
Elek-Tek). The HP-48SX can be had for $250. (Did I mention the 48 has
infrared I/O and Kermit built-in? RS-232 is available via a cable
    accessory.)

I put an HP-48 data sheet from Hewlett-Packard in note 103.45 of the
    PLDVAX::HP_CALCULATORS conference.
