1209.0. "math in industry" by FIVER::DAVE () Thu Mar 08 1990 11:51

       I have been asked to participate in a career night discussion
    on April 3. The topic will be careers available in the computer
    industry. The talk will be given to undergraduates in mathematics
    and students considering a mathematics curriculum.
       I am a hardware design engineer, but would also like to present
    some other possibilities that are available. I would be interested
    in hearing about some of the other careers available within Digital.

Algorithm design.

If you wish to discuss an area that is almost sure to see increased
activity in the future:

Proving designs correct (and a bit too frequently, incorrect :-(

We do some of this ad hoc in architecture, but provably correct design
is also slowly becoming a systematic discipline.

re .0, .1:

	In fact, the RTL group in CL&T (ZKO2-3) has an opening now for
	the MATH RTL. The following was posted in the OASS::JOBS notes file.
	If you or someone you know is interested, contact Yee-Ching Chao
	at DTN 381-2210, or RTL::CHAO.

Title: 50AD (Principle Software Engineer)	3 Requisitions Approved
Location: ZKO
Group: CL&T

Description:

Join a team of engineers building run-time libraries for VAX/VMS, Ultrix, and
future systems. We are currently starting a major effort to provide Run-time
support for a new HW/SW architecture.

Openings exist for the following projects:

o Math RTL Developing math libraries used by Digital's language products;
		engineers with strong Math and CS backgrounds strong urged to
		apply.

o Language RTL: Developing run-time support for FORTRAN, PASCAL, and COBOL
		languages on both VMS and Ultrix systems.

o Utility RTL: Porting the VAX/VMS utility RTL's to new architectures and
		developing new highly portable run-time libraries.

Please send mail to Ken Hobday (RTL::HOBDAY) or Yee-Ching Chao (RTL::CHAO) if
you are interested in any of these openings.

    Besides the job mentioned in .5, can anyone point me to other
    specific areas of the company which employ people with math and
    operations research backgrounds? I currently work in a
    statistical group in Hudson and have been doing a lot of
    optimization work the past few months (which seems to have
    sparked a renewed interest in operations research).

    thanks in advance - Dave

    I did the presentation last night.

    There was one indiviual named Tim would is interested
    in working for Digital. He has a unix background and has
    been accepted for graduate work at UNH.

    If any one is interested in talking to him give me
    a call and I will get in touch with him.
