1181.0. "Help on queuing models" by EAGLE1::BEST (R D Best, sys arch, I/O) Thu Jan 11 1990 18:46

Where can I find expertise within the corporation on queuing models for
performance simulation ?

I'd like to get some help in making some modeling decisions on whether and how
I can aggregate characteristics of I/O subsystems to squish them on top
of an existing I/O performance model that uses the CSIM package.

I think I need (at least for now) to parameterise a cascade combination
of a CI link and an HSC controller. I don't know enough about the subtleties
of queuing theory to judge the legitimacy of this.

there are several groups within the company (including mine) involved
in building and using mathematical and/or simulation models to evaluate
the performance of systems/subsystems.

the assumptions being made and the "level" of detail of the model depend on
the specific questions being answered using the models. what questions are
you trying to answer using the model?

members of the I/O performance group (located at CXO in Colorado) have built
several models of the I/O subsystem and have captured the details of the HSC
controller.

you may want to contact ken bates (SSDEVO::) or dennis haugh (SSDEVO::) in
the I/O performance group. if you still need help, feel free to contact me
directly.

Thanks; I will try Ken and perhaps some other people in CXO.

    You might also try ATPS::PANG (Jee Pang) who has done similar work for
    the DECCP product.

1181.4A useful book..SDOGUS::DRAKEDave (Diskcrash) Drake 619-268-2660Mon Jan 29 1990 00:508
    There is a book available on the subject, somewhat old, but should
    be available through anyplace that carries Dover books.

    We have used queueing models in the field to project IO capacity
    of disk drives under various loads. I wish more engineers had exposure
    to this stuff in order to stay out of trouble.....
