Digital - Signs distribution agreement for mathematics software
	{Livewire, 23-Oct-89}
Digital has announced a distributed software agreement with Wolfram
Research, Inc. of Champaign, Ill., at a press briefing at the Educom
conference for colleges and universities. Under terms of the distribution
license, Digital is granted the right to sell and support Wolfram's popular
Mathematica* software system for its entire line of VAX and RISC computer
systems. The agreement enables Digital to add the full weight of its sales,
marketing, technical support and distribution organizations to the selling
cycle for Mathematica, a software product which has received wide acceptance
since it was introduced on personal computers in June 1988. Mathematica is a
powerful mathematical computation system. The software package allows its
users to perform interactive numerical, symbolic and graphical computations.
It also incorporates a high-level programming language and applications
generator. Pricing, product specifications and availability from Digital will
be announced later this year. "We are very excited about having Mathematica in
the Digital product line because it offers the same technological leap that
calculators spearheaded 20 years ago," said Gary Eichhorn, vice president,
Laboratory Data Products Group. "We believe Mathematica will revolutionize the
way mathematics is used worldwide in education, engineering, research and
commerce." Wolfram Research was founded in 1987 and is based in Champaign, IL.
The company is privately held, and currently has more than 80 employees.

1143.1Not for VMS, now, but soon?AKQJ10::YARBROUGHI prefer PiWed Oct 25 1989 12:595
The VMS version of Mathematica is still a few months away, although the
ULTRIX version may be available now. In the meantime, we do have MAPLE,
for which V4.3 is coming within a few weeks.

Offhand, I don't see why not, since it's written in C. But will WATCOM
deliver a RISC version to us? Don't know.

The Mathematica press release includes the following lines:

" Ship dates :
                Mathematica RISC ULTRIX January

1143.6Do you suppose we will be able to get it on ENET?GENRAL::HEINTZEWed Jan 24 1990 16:467
What has been the situation with other products that DEC only
distributes? Have they been available free of cost over the E-NET for
    internal use?

I assume that -.1 gives prices for external use.

For information on licensing issues with Mathematica, you can contact
the Digital product manager, Mary Raczkowski. She is on
ABACUS::RACZKOWSKI or at dtn 264-3753. She can tell you the price
for Digital employees as well as schedules for future releases.

Art,

I received your request for Pricing of Mathematic, and the Employees
discount.

Currently we are shipping Mathematica on all the RISC platforms, the Ultrix
version is currently on hold, and it is expected to be released shortly.

When you order the Product, you will have to order a License and then the
Documentation and Media. If you will let me know which machine you are
going to be using Mathematica on, I will be more than happy to send you
the appropriate part numbers and associated costs you can expect to be
transfered to your Cost Center.

You would have to pay the Royalty charge for the license, and the transfer
costs for the documentation and media (doc and media costs are approximately
$75.00, costs for the license depends on the cpu.

I would be more than happy to send you the current list prices and
associated Royalty charges for you to put into the NOTES files.

The May 14 issue of Sales Update announced availability of Mathematica on
VAX/VMS systems. Prices range from $2400 on VAXstation platforms to about $70K
on a VAX 6000-460 (no VAX 9000 prices were given). Based on previous replies
to this note I'd guess that its available internally for $1200 on a VAXstation.

1143.11Anybody have Mathematica that I could use?2HOT::SWONGERPeripheral VisionaryFri Mar 15 1991 13:5213
I'm interested in using Mathematica for a grad course that
I am taking - ULowell has about 2 copies running on
unerpowered machines. Is there anybody who has Mathematica
running on a machine and would be willing to let me use it?
I'm located in ZKO, so that would most convenient (either
from the standpoint of setting a display over the net or
working directly on the machine itself).

This would be strictly after-hours usage. If you can help,
please send me mail at VIA::SWONGER.

Do you want it for Digital or yourself? I got the IBM-PC-compatible
student version for $175 by calling Wolfram at 1-217-398-0700. (The
student version does not have coprocessor support and is packaged
differently, but is otherwise functionally identical, according to
    Wolfram.)

Erick, how do you like the mma on the PC? i mean compared to say Maple

    Re .15:

I got Mathematica because it's had more power longer, although Maple is
apparently catching up. It's also got a Windows interface. I can't
tell you how I like it though, because I don't have any hardware yet.
(My system should be ready next week.)

I've only read the Windows interface manual, but it gives me some
concerns. First, the interface does not understand mathematical
objects. It can import, export, and display expressions in both plain
text and formatted expression form and do the same for graphs and other
images, but it does not understand the objects well enough that it can
help you select subexpressions. E.g., you cannot navigate through
existing expressions by using cursor keys to move up or down through
levels of operators or left or right through operands. You can of
course select subexpressions by picking out the text yourself, but a
premiere math package ought to do more for you.

The interface manual also says the Mathematica kernel will die if it
runs out of space. That sounds pretty lame to me; it ought to just
give up the current work without losing existing context.

On the other hand, there's no Windows interface for Maple yet. Given
that the student package is only $99, I may buy it after they complete
    a Windows interface.

I'm also curious about MathCAD's capabilities. (Anybody got a phone
number for the publisher?) I haven't heard anything about Macsyma in a
    while.

phone number for MATHCAD is 1-800-688-8553. be careful, it should
be ONLY $79 for the whole thing! there is a special going on, they
call it the "preferred Engineer/scientist discount program", i think
that is going on till March. i think you must have received in mail
from them this invitation for this price to get it, but try to
ask them on the phone, may be they'll give it to you.

1143.18not for my personal useQUIVER::ARGOTue Jan 19 1993 15:3312
    re. .14:

I don't have a PC at home, so I would like to run it on my workstation
(DECstation 5000/25) here at work. I don't see it being for my
personal use. It could be installed on the host system so that anyone
with access could use it. There are IBM-compatible PCs in the lab
I could use if need be.

Is there someone in DEC I should contact or should I call Wolfram
    directly?

There's an ad in the 12 January PC Magazine for a free Mathcad Working
