469.0. "Classify aX+bY as (ir)rational" by BEING::RABAHY () Tue Apr 08 1986 15:07

Given X and Y are irrational, and a and b are rational; can aX+bY be classified
in general?

A degenerate case; if X=Y then the expression is rational only if a+b=0.

    aX+bY will be rational whenever X is of the form R+bS and Y is of the
    form R-aS, with R rational, and S irrational.

    Otherwise, it will be irrational.

    I believe that is an unsolved problem.
