46.0. "Doubly true alphametics" by HARE::STAN () Sun Feb 26 1984 03:13

A doubly-true alphametic is an alphametic where the words
themselves satisfy the stated equation. For example, the
base 7 alphametic:

		  T W O
		+ T W O
		-------
		F O U R

has the unique solution 523+523=1346 in base 7, and also
represents the fact that 2+2=4.

Doubly-true alphametics have been appearing recently in the
literature. I decided it would be neat to find all double-true
alphametics of certain classes. Now you understand the reason behind
the last two notes.

Anyhow, I have run a program that searches for doubly-true
alphametics consisting of the sum of two numbers being a third,
all three numbers in the range 1-20. Only doubly-true alphametics
that have a unique solution are permitted. I searched 14 different
languages. All bases from 3 through 16 were searched.
The results are listed in the first response to this note.
[I will probably submit this to some journal.]

Of interest is the fact that there was only one solution in English
(TWO+TWO=FOUR in base 7) and only one solution in base 10 (EINN+EINN=TVEIR
in Icelandic).

I am also working on other studies, such as addition alphametics
with more than two summands, and certain sums with numbers up to 100.
I will report on these later.

.re #1 french entry,

   5 + 6 = 11, I thought "SIX" was french for the numeral 6. I've been using
it that way for several years now. "SIZ" is new to me...
