404.0. "Of mini-goals and such..." by CURIE::ASBURY () Fri Feb 17 1989 16:12

    Hi everyone,

    I have an idea. There are many ways to "measure" one's success in
    weightloss efforts. The most obvious, of course, is the scale.
    We have a note for logging progress, which usually means relating
    how "good" the scale says we are. We also have a note called Success
    is... (or something like that) which lets us talk about other ways
    to measure our success.

    Another problem I know that people (myself included) have is staying
    motivated. Often, especially if you have a lot that you want to
    lose, or if you are having a particularly tough time of it, it is
    really easy to get discouraged.

    Something I try to do is set mini-goals for myself. I mean, the
    overall goals are 1) to lose X amount of pounds and 2) to learn/adopt
    better eating habits. but those are rather broad and it's tough
    to see immediate results. So, I've decided to try mini-goals.
    I want them to be small-scale, short-time-frame, and
    relatively-easily-measurable.

    Perhaps you'd like to join me? This note is the place to do it.

    I'll start - my goal for this week is to walk 2 miles (my usual
    distance) at least 4 times. If the weather prevents this, I will
    substitute 1/2 hour on my exercise bike.

    I'll let you know how I do.

    -Amy.

    Your turn!

404.1To stay on program for the weekendCOOKIE::WILCOXDatabase Systems/WestFri Feb 17 1989 19:098
Amy, what a wonderful idea!

My mini-goal for this week is to stay on program for the weekend. That's
been tough lately. I'll report back on next Friday as I'm travelling
on Monday.

    What a good idea this is, Amy! Just what I need to motivate me
    at the beginning of the week.

    I am eating out twice this week, so my mini-goal is to make the best
    choices I can, and control how much I eat and drink (or rather, the
    calories I consume!)

404.3My mini-goal for the week!CIMNET::SHAHNAMMon Feb 20 1989 15:4112
    This is a terrific way to keep up motivation! My mini-goal for
    this week is to plan each meal and write down what I will eat.
    (And actually eat what I've planned!) I hope to go home tonight
    and do this, and then go to the market. I will allow for some snacks
    of my choosing, but I will really try to stick to the plan. I want
    to do this because I've just joined Weight Watchers at Work and
    really want to MAKE IT WORK! I'll check back on Friday, and hopefully
    will be able to set a new mini-goal for the weekend, after having
    successfully acheived this goal!

404.4To pretend to be Princess Leadbottom!EASYNT::SNOWTue Feb 21 1989 01:289
    This is wonderful! My mini-goal for the week is to pretend that
    the major part of me that sits on a chair weighs a ton so I can't
    get up to head for that candy machine just down the hall!

    Have a good week everybody!

Amy,

This is just what I've been looking for. I think it's a great idea.
My goal will be to stick to my diet plan over this weekend, and eat
exactly what I'm supposed to. No cheating at all! Will report in
on Monday. If I don't somebody come after me PLEASE!

Ciao, Angie

P.S. I had about 40 lbs to lose - have lost just over 12 lbs and am just
about hitting Lack_of_motivation_mode!

    	Hmm, mini-goals...

    	My mini-goals are simple, do something every week specifically
    for me. Like saving $25, by not eating Greasy Grimy Gofer Guts.
    (Loosely translated to McDonalds,BurgerDeath,Wimpy's etc.)

404.7A little reward...SHIRE::BELLWinsome ways and wicked wilesMon Feb 27 1989 06:0513
Well I managed to stick to my "mini" goal... I didn't eat exactly what I
had planned but I didn't spoil it by overeating. I feel quite pleased
with myself.

My next goal for this week is not to have any chocolate or wine, I will
then reward myself on Saturday with 2 glasses of red wine.

Hope all of you are managing to stick to your goals.

Cheers, Angie

I stuck to half of my "make it thru the weekend" goal. I was completely
on program Saturday. Will work extra hard at making it thru the entire
upcoming weekend!

    I'd like to enter my "mini-goal" as it seems more important in print.
    I want to be under 200 lbs. by this coming weekend. Depending on
    when I weigh and whose scales that ranges between 2 - 5 pounds.
    I'll go with my home scale which is the 2 pound choice.

404.10a new goal...CURIE::ASBURYWed Mar 29 1989 12:2113
    Well, how is everyone doing? A few weeks ago, my goal was to walk
    2 miles at least 4 times a week. I came close. Now I have a new
    goal. I want to lose 6 pounds in the next 3 weeks. Sounds reasonable,
    right? I hope so. Unfortunately, I have been doing a lot of emotional
    eating lately. Not good for the body or the soul. I'm gonna work on that.
    But I'm also walking a lot more and even getting up early some mornings
    and riding my exercise bike before work.

    How are you coming with these mini-goals?

    -Amy.

    Well, I started walking 3 miles at lunchtime on Monday, I walked
    again on Tuesday, however I have a secretarial luncheon today, and
    will have to wait to Thursday to walk again (providing the weather
    cooperates). I want to keep this up until my vacation in May.
    My actual mini-goal is to be in a comfortable 10 by mid-may. My
    best freind from high-school, and my husbands best friend from the
    service will be here to visit then. They have been in Germany for
    the last 3 years, and call it ego, but I just don't want them to
    see me at my current weight.

    By the way, I just put on a size 12 for the first time this morning
    in 2 years! Boy does it feel great!

404.12I did it and have a new oneCOOKIE::WILCOXDatabase Systems/WestThu Mar 30 1989 14:3815
I did make it thru one weekend recently completely "on program". (it was
obviously NOT the Easter weekend I referred to in my latest entry in
the progress note).

This week I have a goal to walk and/or do aerobics 4 times. I've done
the aerobics twice, and will most likely get to do the walking on the
weekend.

I'm SO HAPPY that the time is changing this weekend. It makes it stay
light enough after dinner that I can walk 2 miles with my daughter in
her backpack (a serious reminder that i used to weigh that much more!).

404.13well, all right!CURIE::ASBURYThu Mar 30 1989 16:5013
    re .12

    Liz - Congratulations! I know how much trouble you have making it
    through a weekend on program. And I sympathize, because I have the
    same problem. It's just so much tougher. But, now that you've done
    it once, you have a success to look back on. (And I can say "if
    she did it, so can I!")

    Good job!

    -Amy.

    My mini-goal is to get back on program for at least one week.
    I've been off program for a week and a half now, and I'm
    going to aerobics tonight and then back to Weight Watchers.
    I've lost 18 pounds so far, so I know I can do it. If I can
    get back on track for one week then I know, I'm on the road
    to success once again.

    It's just a difficult time for me right now because my best
    friend since high school told me that she's moving to
    California. (I'm in Mass.) Needless to say, I'm not taking
    it very well. I'll have to find some new ways to comfort
    myself without going for the cookies.

    Anyway, I followed program for 2 months and then screwed up
    for a week and a half. I'll consider that vacation. Now if
    I can stay on it for 1 week, I'll know that I'm back on the
    road to the new thinner me.

404.15Plugging along!COOKIE::WILCOXDatabase Systems/WestTue Jun 06 1989 19:3416
I've set a few mini-goals for myself this week and am doing great!

1.  Don't weigh myself - I find if I see I'm down a pound or two
    I get in the "I can cheat" mode.

2. Write it all down in my food diary - this is tough because it
    sometimes means facing something I don't want to face like
    having eaten a LOT of cookies. I decided I'd write it down
    anyhow.

3. Walk - I've been out all but one night so far this week.

My week ends on Wednesday so I'll throw an entry in the progress note then!

    Is anyone interested in starting this note again?

    I'll post my "weekend goals".

    I'm going to try not to plow thru the cream cheese brownies I made for
    company tonight. I also plan to go biking 10-15 miles tomorrow, and do
    the Nordic Track and one excersize video (Buns of Steel, probably) on
    Sunday.

    re .17 - HA! That was cute! (I needed that Monday morning humor!)

    Well, I did ride my bike Saturday. AND raked the lawn for a little over
    an hour. Sunday, felt lousy (must have a bug, I still feel weird). BUT!
    I did get up early this morning and did the bike and Nordic Track. And
    I didn't eat the cream cheese brownies. Have discovered in the past few
    weeks, that my lactose intolerance thing is acting up again. In a way,
    thats good, because I don't eat dairy stuff when that happens. I'd made
    a batch of the cream cheese choc. chip squares and chocolate orgasms to
    divide between company Friday night, and friends that were moving into
    their house Saturday. Managed to only have 1 choc. orgasm Friday night.
    (Which for me, is a HUGE victory!) 8-)
