305.0. "Doctors Orders?" by SKETCH::BASSETT (Design) Tue Jun 14 1988 16:57

Why do all diets tell you not to go under a 1000 calories per day
unless supervised by a doctor? If you eat good foods with little
calories, it can't be bad for you...

Eating less then 1000 calories a day can cause several problems:

    	1.	Loss of muscle tissue

The body begins burning muscle tissue for energy.
                THIS INCLUDES HEART TISSUE!

    	2.	Ketosis

Keytones released by the burning of fat.

    	3.	Dizziness and Fainting Spells

Due to lack of sugar to the brain.

Basically, any diet under 1000 calories is considered starvation.
If you do it, you must be under medical supervision. A doctor can
spot trouble before it harms you.

I find that if I have less than 1000 calories then I am NOT getting
the basic requirements for the day

    	2 from the milk group
    	2 from the meat group
4 from the fruit and veggie group
4 from the bread and cereal group

I am usually lacking in the milk group...

So look at what you are eating if you are less than 1000 calories
and you may not be getting your basic daily requirements...

305.3My experience with this....QBUS::WOODWed Jun 15 1988 15:4128

    Exactly...

I have just gone thru this myself. I do not eat much meat
and had been so busy that my eating had gotten all messed up.
I was not eating the right foods. I was feeling weak, dizzy,
tired *all* the time, not sleeping well at night.

My Dr. has recommended a very good quality protein powder
to use twice a day to supply part of my protein that I'm not
getting in the regular food I'm eating. And it also provides
all the vitamins and minerals I need. I have been using this
for only 1 week now and can already tell a difference in how
    I feel.

Note: This is not recommended to take the place of food.
I take into account the calories contained in the powder and
the calories in the fruit juice that I mix it with and then
go ahead and eat salads, vegetables, dairy products, etc. to
equal the daily calories that I need.

I was essentially doing what .0 talks about...eating "good
foods with little calories" and too few calories are just not
    good for you!
