304.0. "I Ate It Anyways" by NHL::ARNO () Tue Jun 14 1988 13:49

    			I ate It anyways
                        ----------------

    How many times do you eat something and you really weren't
    hungry?

    Have some of you learned to control this ? What steps
    did you take ?

    I don't always but sometimes if I see something I take
    it because it looks good.. and smells great..and others
    are munching....

    I seem to be doing real well as I am on a strick diet that
    my Dr..has me on and it doesn't have much..but it's one I
    need to be on because of health problems..but I have a
    very hard time following it sometimes..

304.1I *know* where you are coming from!JJM::ASBURYTue Jun 14 1988 14:2530
    Hi Ann,

    It's nice to hear from you again. You haven't been too active in
    this file lately. Hope your diet is progressing well.

    Boy, you really hit it on the head with this question! I do this,
    too. I am happy to say, though, that I do it much less frequently
    now than I used to.

    Some of the steps I have taken to try to control this nasty habit
    are: I avoid red-light foods. I don't, if I can help it, go anywhere
    near them. Or if I have to be near them, I do everything I can not
    to look at them. I also, say at parties or gatherings or whatever,
    always try tio have a glass in my hands, filled with water or seltzer
    or something like that. This keeps my hands busy so I am not inclined
    to snack just to keep my hnds occupied. I have also been trying
    to talk to myself *before* I eat anything. I ask myself how much
    I really want it? Is it worth it the negative effects just for that
    one good effect (the way it tastes at that very moment)? Quite often
    the answers are no, I guess I don't REALLY want it and NO it's not
    worth the bad effects.

    I find that I feel guilty much less often now than when I used to
    "eat it anyway".

    Good luck, Ann. (By the way, I'd be interested to hear about your
    progress and if you ever need a good word, let me know!)

     -Amy.

304.2How badly did you want it?SRFSUP::TERASHITACalifornia NativeTue Jun 14 1988 17:0518
    Hi, Ann! Nice to hear from you.

    re .0

    I, too, have often started to eat something that looked and/or smelled
    great, only to find that it really didn't taste that wonderful...or
    that one bite satsified me. My solution: Don't finish it! If
    my husband wants it, I give it to him. If not, I either leave it
    behind (if I really didn't like it) or take it home (if it was good)
    to have for lunch the next day (or whenever).

    Most importantly, I don't let the "guilties" sabatoge my food plan.
    If it was good, and I ate it all, I ask myself "was it worth it?".
    If it wasn't worth it, I try to remember so that I don't do it again.
    If it *was* worth it, I forget about it and get right back on the plan.

    Lynn

304.3try this!COPA::CABANYAWed Jun 15 1988 12:0615
    Hi Ann,

    In his book 'Rotation Diet', the author devotes several chapters
    to dealing with these types of problems. The techniques are VERY
    good; pick up the book and give it a try! It takes a while to
    re-evaluate your feeling towards food, this will help you to get
    started!

    Hope you're doing well, haven't heard of your progress lately!

    good luck,

    mary

    Re 3; That diet sounds Great but I am on a Dr's diet and right
    	   now I need to stick to that..as I need to get some weight
    	   OFF FAST.. as I am heading for Big problems if I don't.

    Once I get out of the danger like my Blood sugar is ok and my
    Blood pressure and Coles.. is lower.. but she will still have
    me on a nother one after..

    Thanks

    Ann

304.5still good advice...JJM::ASBURYWed Jun 15 1988 12:2911
    re: .4

    Ann, you can still learn good ideas from the Rotation Diet
    Book (or any other book about such things, for that matter)
    about how to deal with problems like the one you asked about
    in the base note without having to follow the diet itself!

    Hang in there!

    -Amy.

304.6not the diet, just the techniquesCOPA::CABANYAWed Jun 15 1988 15:5617
    'lo again Ann,

    Regarding the Rotation Diet, the chapters on getting in control
    of food, binging, etc. aren't related to his (rotation diet) but
    are general chapters that should help with any diet ... The
    techniques *may* help.

    Sure hope you're doing well, its very difficult to change life-long
    habits and feelings towards food. I still have problems not eating
    all the leftovers on the table, other people's plates and my own
    plate! (Just think of all those starving children.)

    Let us know how you're doing, we're behind you!

304.8Weight Watcher leaders are human too!AKOV12::PIMENTELFri Jun 17 1988 13:3213
    Ann, I'm sure if you go back to Weight Watchers and explain to the
    leader about the diet you need to follow and the support you need
    from the group etc. your leader will more than understand. Perhaps
    when you finish losing your weight your dr. may recommend the ww
    program or a similiar one for you to live by anyway. Do what you
    need to do to reach your goal.

    I find this file helps me, sometimes more than sitting at the meetings.
    So know you are not alone in the boat and keep talking to us.
