792.0. "Fresh Ideas for Breakfast and Lunch" by WR1FOR::MEYERS_NA () Fri Mar 19 1993 22:43

    Hi,

I need some good ideas for low-cal, low-fat (but filling) breakfast
suggestions (I tend to be the hungriest during the morning). Things
I have tried which I liked have been:

o home-made oat bran or whole wheat muffins

       o Grapenuts with fresh strawberries

I don't really like shakes since I like to chew things.

If you also have some good ideas for lunch I would also appreciate
that (I don't like alot of veggies though in salads).

    Thanks in advance!

    Nancy

Cream of Wheat is good - 100 calories per serving, no fat.
I usually make a double serving, for a 200 calorie breakfast!

Oatmeal likewise, 100 calories per serving, 1 gram of fat,
and I often eat a double serving. I'll add in some raisins
	occasionally.

Special K waffles have no fat, though I'm not sure on the calories.

For lunches, (I'm sure I've put this in here somewhere before), I
like to take a can of low fat soup (Certain Progresso soups, Campbell's
Healthy Request) and add a cup of rice and some frozen vegetables until
	it's fairly thick. Very filling.

Look in the recipe note for more ideas - I put in a note for
Pasta and peas that's very low fat.

For breakfast I usually have hot cereal (many varieties: oatmeal,
maltex, cream of wheat, mixed grain, etc) with bananas, apples,
raisins, nuts or whatever, and a little milk in it.

Also bagels (with low-fat cream cheese, hummus, jam, or cheese); toast w/
low-fat cheese, cottage-cheese+fruit+cinnamon or jam; yogurt with
grapenuts or muesli (sp) and fresh fruit; pancakes made with Eggbeaters
    and little or no oil topped with jam, fresh fruit or sauted apples;
french toast made with Eggbeaters; rice + milk "pudding".

The Grape-Nuts commercial is pretty accurate....

.....try putting the Grape-Nuts in the milk, then putting it into
the microwave for a minute. Then add some bananas, or strawberries,
or whatever (I like fresh blueberries!)

When I have time on weekends, I like to make crepes with fresh fruit in them.
Crepes are pretty easy to make...I use just the egg whites and use a teflon
skillet.

Crepes are great, and a double bonus because they keep well, and even
freeze, for those weekday morning when you *don'* have time.

You can also use them for "blintzes" with a filling of cottage cheese,
cinnamon, raisins, etc, baked till warm and toasty, topped with fresh
    fruit.

A recipe I got at Diet Workshop (and it's pretty good!)

2 rice cakes (40 calories each)
       1/4 Cup Non-fat Cottage Cheese (~70 calories)
1 tsp. Diet Jelly or Polaner All-fruit (? calories, but minimal)

Split Cottage Cheese and Jelly evenly and spread both on the
rice cakes. Stick them in the microwave for 15-20 seconds.
They provide very low calories and nutritious breakfast.

Add a glass of OJ for Vitamin C.

792.6Granola in your yogurtSPESHR::MAHONThu Apr 22 1993 00:374
When I'm in a rush, I put granola in a non-fat yogurt. Puts
a little crunch into breakfast and contains protein and carbohydrates.
