494.0. "Calorie Content of Fast Food Items" by PNEUMA::WILSON (Featuring the Brazilian Bat of Death) Fri Aug 11 1989 17:11

    A friend of mine would like a list of the calorie and fat
    content of popular fast foods items (McDonald's, Wendy's,
    Burger King).

    Is it somewhere in this file already? I did a bit of searching but came
    up empty handed.

    	Bookstores have lots of guides to fast food nutrition.

    	Or you could ask the manager of any fast food place, if he doesn't
    have the information, (s)he'll know how you can get it. But you'll
    spend lots of time making the rounds and writing letters. Think
    about stopping by a bookstore.

494.3Fast Food FactsFSTTOO::SWEENEYSusan SweeneySun Aug 13 1989 14:2529
I have a pamphlet called 'Fast Food Facts' put out by Eli Lilly and Company
from Indianapolis. It is for diabetics. It has some great information in
it like...
	- serving size
	- calories
	- carbohydrate
	- protein
	- fat
	- sodium
	- exchanges

This information is listed for Burger King, Hardee's, Kentucky Fried Chicken,
McDonald's, Wendy's, and Pizza Hut.

At the back of the pamphlet it says...

"This booklet is provided as a service by Eli Lilly and Company,
manufacturer of Humulin (human insulin [recombinant DNA origin]) and Iletin
(insulin, Lilly).  The information has been excerpted from 'Fast Food Facts;
Nutritive and Exchange Values for Fast Food Restaurants', Marion Franz, RD, MS
(data collected 1985). For information on how to obtain the complete booklet
or other publications for diabetes patients, write to: The International
Diabetes Center, 500 West 39th Street, Minneapolis, MN 55416"

I will make some photocopies of the pamphlet and if anyone wants a copy, you
can send me mail on FSTVAX::SWEENEY with your name and mailstop.

494.4that should be 9.6% calories from fat, not 11%MILKWY::ZARLENGAmiss, I coulda gotten that for yaTue Mar 03 1992 05:1918
    I was in Burger King last week and they have these HUGE nutrition
    charts up (it's about time) so I asked the manager if they had any
    smaller versions, and if I could have one.

    I have two pamphlets, "Your guide to nutrition at Burger King" and
    "The ligher way menu."

    One nice feature in the first pamphlet, is the section where they
    suggest ways to shave calories off the fast foods, for example the
    mayo on a Whopper is 146 calories, all fat, and the ranch sauce
    on the BK broiler is 90 calories, mostly fat.

    So, a whopper, hold the mayo comes in at 470, and 5 grams of fat.
    That's 11% of the calories from fat, and that's not bad at all for
    a fast food burger.

    Next time you eat at BK, ask for a few of these, they'll help you
    make smart choices when you eat out.
494.5STAR::LEWISTue Mar 03 1992 16:178
    Yes, those nutritional brochures can be full of interesting facts. I
    picked one up at Au Bon Pain the last time I ate there and found out
    that the hearth rolls that I'm so fond of contain 250 calories. I
    was counting them as 2 WW bread exchanges instead of 3. Live and
    learn!

    Taco Bell has a new tray liner that lists % calories from fat for
    the various menu choices.

    I nearly gagged on my taco when I saw that for almost every single
    choice, the % calories from fat was nearly 50%.

    If memory serves me right, the tostada had the lowest %, at about 30%.

    re .9

    All fats have the same number of calories per gram. Corn oil and other
    low cholesterol oils are no lower in calories than high-cholesterol
    fats like lard and coconut oil. If you have to watch your cholesterol,
    then these oils might be better, but as far as losing weight it doesn't
    make one bit of difference.

     I'm sure you must not of meant this? I mean the % of fat in certain
     oils do make a difference, if your trying to loose weight it would be
     advantageous to stick with lower fat oils (when needed) as it is
     recommended to lower your fat intake?

The only difference between oils is the saturated-ness which ties to
blood cholesterol via some very vague relationships.

Caloriewise, oil = fat = 9 calories per gram, or about 100 calories per
tablespoon.

    Have you heard of McDonald's McLean burger?

    It's advertised as 91% fat free.

    But the nutrition information sheet lists the McLean Deluxe (that's
    without cheese) as 320 calories, with 10 grams of fat. That's 28%
    of the calories from fat, not nearly as good as it sounds when they
    just talk about the % fat by weight of the uncooked patty.

    I'll stick with my hold-the-mayo-Whoppers (see .4).

494.18Hummos recipes in COOKSESCROW::ROBERTSThu Oct 08 1992 21:306
    Depends on how its made. Recipes vary with the cook, and some use lots
    of tahini, which is sesame paste -- very high fat -- and many people
    also add olive oil. For recipes and more information about hummus try
    PAGODA::COOKS, note 873.

My Weight Watchers' Maintenance Guide lists hummus as:

	1/3 cup = 1 FA, 1 P, 1 1/2 B

For the non-Weight Watchers:

	1 FA = 40 calories
	1 P  = 70 calories
	1 B  = 80 calories

This is for the average restaurant hummus. If you make it yourself, you
can count the individual ingredients.

    I don't have McDonald's grilled chicken sandwich info, but Wendy's is:

    	Chicken Sandwich - 19.0 gm fat, 430 calories
    	Grilled chicken sandwich - 13.0 gm fat, 340 calories

    This info is from The T-Factor Fat Gram Counter. I've been using it for
    about six weeks for everything. It's fits very nicely into your purse
    (about 4" x 3-1/2").

    I assume that the fat and calories would be lower if you get the items
    prepared with no condiments (maybe just lettuce/tomato).

    forget the calories, look at the fat content for those items. Unless
    that's all you eat with fat in it that is really going to push it.
494.22BK BroilerESCROW::ROBERTSFri Oct 09 1992 15:5011
    If you want a low-fat fast food chicken sandwich, go for the BK broiler
    at Burger King. They have a leaflet that lists nutritional analyses of
    their foods, and this sandwich is the lowest thing on it. It contains
    4 grams of fat, if you "hold the sauce". And it actually tastes OK,
    too. I don't know how many calories are in it, since I don't count
    calories, just grams of fat.

    It's interesting to look at the leaflet they have. One of the *worst*
    things to get, in terms of fat is the breaded and fried chicken
    sandwich. And the breaded and fried fish sandwich. I can't remember
    the numbers, but they were higher in fat than the cheeseburgers.

    That's 34% of the calories from fat, not much better.

    FYI: when I get the BK broiler, I replace the "sauce" with mustard.

    Since your chart show quite a different figure for the BK Broiler than
    what I remembered, I went to Burger King today to take a look at their
    chart again. Their chart lists the sandwich as containing 10 grams of
    fat, 4 grams of which come from the sauce. So I did remember
    incorrectly, since I thought the sauce was 6 and the sandwich 4. But
    this is still quite different from what your chart shows.

    I tend to thing the BK chart is correct. This sandwich doesn't *taste*
    like it has a lot of fat in it.

494.30I don't eat fast food anywayCFSCTC::CFSCTC::CARROLLa woman full of fireFri Oct 16 1992 23:1720
    I've never had a BK broiler so I can't say.

    Remember that figures for these things, no matter what your source, can
    be innaccurate up to 20% off.

    One of the reasons I find the Encyclopedia annoying is that it lists
    VERY precise values when it can't possibly be that accurate. Also, it
    has many precise value for imprecise measures of food. For instance,
    how can they know that a "medium apple" has 74 calories? How do they
    know it doesn't have 78? Sheesh!

    Anyway, use your best judgement. The difference between 10 grams of fat
    and 18 grams of fat is only about 70 calories worth, which will not
    make or break any diet.

    What is the sauce, anyway? Is it mayo-based? Real mayonaise or "salad
    dressing" has 4 grams of fat per tsp or thereabouts. I'm skeptical
    that the sauce has so little fat...

    D!
494.31Don't know what the Sauce isESCROW::ROBERTSSat Oct 17 1992 00:179
    yes, if you are counting calories, it's not a big deal. But I try to
    limit myself to 25-30 grams of fat per day when I am dieting, so for me
    the difference between 10 grams of fat and 18 is considerable. I don;t
    know what the sauce is made of, sinc I've never gotten it. I imagine
    it is mayo based, and I hate any of that sort of thing on warm food.
    So I don't even miss the sauce. The BK Broiler, by the way, is just a
    broiled piece of skinless chicken breast on a sort-of bran roll.

    When in doubt ... trust the Burger King literature.

    The sandwiches can undergo lots of changes over the course of a year
    or two, and the pamphlets from the company should reflect the latest
    sandwich.
