714.0. "Soup: Cup O' Noodles" by FORTSC::ROCH () Tue Jan 14 1992 22:28

    Does anyone know the calorie content/fat content in the instant
    Cup O' Noodles or soups that you just add water in a cup?

    The ones from Nissin don't have any caloric content on it...and
    that always worries me...the second ingredient is Cottonseed oil, but I
    still can't believe that the percent of fat is that bad. I did look
    on a Lipton box (no low cal or anything) and it said 60 calories 2 fat
    for a serving for cream of brocolli....

    Anyway...I would just feel safer if I knew I wasn't eating ten times
    more than I should...

    Thanks for any light you can shed...

    ...Vicki

714.1CUP O NOODLESCSSE::MARCOTTETue Jan 14 1992 22:525
    I think it is quite high - I know they are VERY high in salt
    content. I believe most of these "packaged" foods are really
    not that nutritious.

    My tenet is not to buy stuff that isn't labeled. Easier here in the UK
    than in the US, laws being different and all, labelling is or will
    shortly be, compulsory.

Andy, labelling is soon going to become compulsory in the US. They are
totally revamping the labelling laws. The latest issue of Consumer
Reports has a very interesting article on it...

714.4Funny you should ask!!ESMAIL::AZARIANFri Jan 17 1992 19:067
In last months Consumer Digest (Not Consumer Report) they evaluated a zillion
different instant soups and canned soups. It's everything you always
wanted to know about soup and were afraid to ask.... and after you read
it you won't wonder why you cant lose weight if you're eating those
things for lunch as I was.

714.5try Fantastic Foods ones...TLE::DBANG::carrolla woman full of fireFri Jan 17 1992 22:4410
If you want good packaged soup, I really like the "Fantastic Foods"
cup-o-rice things. They come in cups similar to cup-a-noodle cups,
but with flavors like "Jumpin' Black Bean
Soup", "Curried Rice and Lentils", "Couscous and Lentils", "Cajuns
Red Beans and Rice", and "Vegetarian Chili". They are tasty, and
low in fat (some have no fat added at all).

I buy them in the health food aisle at Purity Supreme.

    re .-1

    Yes, these are great. They also have pasta varieties now. I tried the
    vegetable Parmesan last night and it's relly good. 4 gr of fat and 9
    gr of protein. That's almost as good a ratio as skim milk.

714.7Love those Leapin Lentils! ESMAIL::AZARIANMon Jan 20 1992 21:2810
That whole variety of soups is featured in Vegetarian Times. When I ran across
them at Purity (even the health food stores don't seem to carry them) It was
a stroke of luck. My 6 year old thought she died and went to ... where ever
6 year olds go when they pig out!

The meals also have a high fiber content when compared with regular "ad H20"
type lunches. .... now if I could just find them on sale!!! (Less than $1.49
a piece)

714.8cheaper than buying lunch at the cafe, tho...TLE::DBANG::carrolla woman full of fireMon Jan 20 1992 22:575
They are kind of expensive. I wonder if BJ's or some other wholesaler
sells them in bulk? I imagine that keep virtually forever...anyone
wanna split a case?  :-)

714.9They don't stock "Health" food!ESMAIL::AZARIANThu Jan 30 1992 21:119
I've never seen healthy instant soups at Costco's (I haven't done BJ's in
a few years!)

I'm game for a whole case. They're nifty. Maybe we could contact the company
and make a "bulk rate" request.

Someone let me know. A healthier cheeper lifestyle would benefit me greatly.

    The .99 price is the everyday price {at least it is every time
    I have gone into the store}.
