Its been over 15 years since I did Karate, but my feeling is that its a
very disciplined sport and if you want to do it well it will require a lot
of practice and discipline. Its also a sport that has a lot of stretching
and similar exercise.
My guess is that a combination of the stretching, plus the discipline it
will enforce (if you want to do it correctly) will definitely make one
much firmer and burn calories.

I was speaking with someone here the other day about weight control,
and he said that karate helped considerably, but that he needed to get
a more aerobic workout to complement it. He ended up taking up running
as well, and using a treadmill when the weather didn't cooperate.

| Being an ex-instructor of Mokokan Karate I felt obligated to reply.
The key to Martial arts is not just the stretching, but the mental
training that is recieved internally. One of the main training
techniques I used was tension, that is using your own muscles as a
negative resistance, this gives the same effect as wieght training.
Another advantage to Martial Arts is the breathing techniques used,
proper breathing helps improve inner organs and makes them work more
efficient. That is the basis behind kei (the yell that is made during
contact), when the kei is done you are focusing all you energy to one
small focus point which; 1. purges the lungs 2. creates negative
resistance throughout the body
Sorry for going on a bit if you need more information on the advantages
of Martial arts or what to look for in a good school (there are alot of
ripoff artist out there) just e-mail me
