876.0. "Peppers" by DPDMAI::HUDDLESTON (If it is to be, it's up to me) Mon Jan 30 1995 18:09

Does anyone remember an article on peppers? Its was saying how good
they were for you, and I couldn't remember the benefits from them. I'm
not eating jalepino's, but am eating mild banana peppers and the "hot
as heck" (mild) greek peppers. If thats mild, I'd prob. die if I ate
    the hot one!

Anyway, if someone remembers the benefits and could post it I'd be much
    obliged.

876.1Some like it hot ! COMICS::MACLEANA Pure Dear in a Wicked WorldTue Jan 31 1995 16:5723

I vaguely remember an article in Scientific American (I think)
well over a year ago that detailed the effects of peppers .

If I remember correctly they were supposed to give your body
a mild ' high ' and could increase your tolerance to pain /
    symptoms of illness

Some of the Uk womens magazines also had filler items with the
same sort of thing a couple of months later .

Maybe someone else remembers more ?..I know that pepper hotness
is measured in schovilles ( I think there's a note in the COOK
notesfile with a complete scale just in case you wish to know
what is 'safe' and what's not :-} ) . I'm now careful with
pepper , as I had a nasty experience chopping peppers where
somehow the juice got underneath my nails and boy were they on
fire and no amount of handwashing / nail scrubbing could ease
things !. I had also just been peeling onions prior to that and
rubbed my eyes to clear them of tears ....you can imagine the
    rest , I didn't know I knew that many expletives !!

There was an article on one of the late 'nobody watches these
programmes' last week about peppers - the hotter they are the more
energy they are supposed to give you?

    Sorry that's all I know,
    Regards,
    Anji
