    			Starting the New Year on the Right foot

    This year I plan on eating right and sticking to it. I had lost
    some weight before the New Year. I planned on starting again
    today and I did.

    Lets all have a good year and stick to it. We are worth it !

    If plan on cutting out sweats and Fats and sticking to Veggies
    and fruit as much as I can.

    Lets support each other.

841.3The answer?WREATH::SCOPAThu Jan 13 1994 19:3310
    For what it's worth I've decided to try a vegetarian lifestyle this
    year. That's the only type dieting that I plan to do for about 6
    months to see what effect it has on my weight.

    So far so good. I expect to drop at least 10 pounds or more in January
    just from eliminating meat and the fat that comes with it.

    Of course it helps that I love salads.

    Mike,

    What do you eat to get Protein in your diet ? Are you trying Veggies
    Recipes ? There are some cooks on TV that just use Veggies.
    I never knew you could create such good recipes using Veggies.

841.5Protein....get it wherever you canWREATH::SCOPATue Mar 15 1994 22:2829
    Wow I haven't been in here for awhile.

    Ann, to answer your question I am going heavy on the salads and I throw
    in cheese (low-fat) for protein. I have a friend who is a nutritionist
    and she is all excited I've gone the veggie route but she said that I
    should include fish in my diet.

    I am currently experimenting with many different types of recipes for
    meatless sauces and you'd be surprised how many low-fat, tasty recipes
    there are out there. When I have a chance I'll put one in here that
    uses eggplant and mushrooms as a base for the sauce.

    I've gone meatless now for about 75 days and I recall only one or two
    days in which I craved meat. On one of those days I happened to be near
    a restaurant that oozed the aroma of char-broiled meat.

    The best test was making a meat dish for the rest of the family and not
    touching it myself. When I got past that obstacle I figured it would be
    easy sailing.

    With Easter coming up one would expect another tough obstacle...we'll
    see.

    I have a question for others who have gone meatless but have consumed
    meat after a prolonged (6 months or more) period of vegetarian living.
    Does the body react to the reintroduction of meat? That is, is there a
    breaking in period? Just curious.

841.6definitely - adding back meat is toughGOLLY::CARROLLthe courage of my contradictionsWed Mar 16 1994 00:427
    Oh yeah...I used to go a few months without eating red meat frequently,
    and the first time (or two) that I ate red meat again it caused a very
    nasty case of indigestion, gas and diarrhea. No fun. I've heard that
    life-long vegetarians can almost totally lose the ability to digest
    meat. Definitely I would think a break-in period would be necessary.

841.7vegetarians do develop a problem digesting meat!NECSC::HATCHMon Mar 21 1994 21:3015
    Hi Mike and D!

    	Believe what you have heard about vegetarians!

       My sister eats very little meat, and then it is only chicken or
    turkey. For years she didn't eat either and when she started again she
    had severe stomach cramps, etc. She doesn't eat any "red" meat at all!
    The sight and smell of it makes her queasy. She eats mainly fish and
    cheese along with pasta to supplement the vegetables and fruit.

    Her cholesterol is extremely low and her blood pressure is too so the
    dieticians are right on target with their constant pushing for people
    to lower their consumption of red meat.
