725.0. "Calorie/Fat Help?" by DKAS::FEASE (Andrea Midtmoen Fease) Thu Mar 05 1992 16:36

    Hi,

Does anyone out there have one of those pamphlets from McDonalds
that tells you the calories/fat/etc. of their fast foods? If so, could
you send me a copy of it? My mailstop is LMO2/B10.

Oh, and can anyone recommend a good calorie/fat count book? I
went to the bookstore yesterday, and found two books that just had
calories, and one book that had fat, but nothing that had both!

         Thanks!

    Hi again,

All set for the McDonald's information (thanks Sharon!).

    Andrea,

The man who wrote the T-Factor diet book has a little handbook
out the has the fat (and calorie I think) count for alot of
foods. I found it in the diet book section of a large
    book store... it's called the T-Factor <mumble mumble>...
it's about 5" tall and fits in a pocket or purse
    easily.

    with love,
    chey

.2 - I guess I'm trying to avoid buying *two* books if possible (and
this was a good-sized bookstore, the Open Book in Westboro).

.3 - I'll take a look and see. Thanks Cheyenne!

The one that my nutritionist recommended is "The Complete Book of Food Counts"
by Corinne T. Netzer. It's a paperback, $5.99, and runs about 600 pages. It
lists the calories, protein grams, carb grams, fat grams, and cholesterol,
sodium and fiber counts for generic and brand name foods.

It seems to have all of the things you were looking for, but I wouldn't
recommend carrying it in your pocket. :-)

I have that Food Counts book. It's great. Unfortunately, now
that I know exactly what's in all the fast food stuff, I can't
bring myself to eat it anymore!

Boy, have I been craving curly french fries!

The bookstore just got a shipment of Food Counts - it's really
great. They also had a hardcover Encyclopedia of Food Counts by the
same author, but I wasn't going to spend $25 on it ... at least not yet
    ;-) .

The T-Factor small paperback is good to carry around, so I got
    that one too ;-) .

whats the difference between Fat and Cholesterol. Like Shrimp
has no fat, but tons of Cholesterol. If your on a low fat
    diet, could you eat shrimp?

.8> what's the difference between Fat and Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is found in animal foods. It is unrelated to animal
fats, with the one exception that when you consume less saturated
fat, your serum (blood) cholesterol level will usually drop.

Chemically, cholesterol and fat are not similar, but many people
    assume they are.

Humans need cholesterol - it's one of the building blocks for all
cell membranes. It is necessary for the manufacture of bile, sex
hormones, vitamin D, and myelin. All the cholesterol we need can
be produced by the body (the liver and intestines).

.8> Like Shrimp has no fat, but tons of Cholesterol. If you're on a low fat
.8> diet, could you eat shrimp?

    Yes.

In fact, even the more fatty cuts of fish (eg: salmon) are not that
bad for you - as long as the fish is a cold water fish - the fat is
loaded with omega-3 fatty acids. You will still have to take the 9
calories per gram, but omega-3 fats are some of the best you can eat.
