571.0. "Weight gain after exercise???" by FDCV10::RSWRK () Fri Mar 16 1990 20:57

This is my first entry in this file, although I have been a
frequent "read-only" person for a long while now. Like a lot
of people in this conference, my weight has yo-yo'd for most
of my life. Recently (4 months ago), I gave up smoking and
added an additional 9 pounds to my already considerable bulk.
Strange thing about stopping smoking - it gives you a new
outlook on health in general. So, all of a sudden my extra
poundage became not so much a "Why should it matter what I
look like issue" but an "I went thru hell to give up the
butts and I won't let extra pounds kill me" issue.

So, I started a "watch what you eat" program that included
lots of water, fresh fruit and vegetables, salads for lunch
and NO eating between meals. This was going well and I had
lost 6 pounds in 3-4 weeks and was feeling good.

This week, I added brisk walking to my regimen. 2-3 mile
walks at lunch time. Felt great. Plenty of energy. Same diet
as listed above. Jumped on the scale this morning......

GAINED ??????? 5 pounds (this since last Sunday, which was the
last time I weighed myself)!! Could the sudden influx of serious
exercise cause the scale to go wacko or what???

Had a serious talk with myself after weighing in this AM, so am
really not too discouraged, just confused.

    Can anybody help????

    Nancy

Please don't get discouraged, Nancy. What you're experiencing is not at
all unusual, and you should see more of a loss again in the next few
weeks. As you start to exercise your body's metabolism shifts, and you
start to add muscle bulk. If your diet is healthy and balanced, and
you're getting regular exercise, you will be better off; once you start to
lose again, it'll come off faster and more steadily.

    Hang in there!

    PS: I think there's more discussion of this in the Exercise topic(s);
Do a DIR/TITLE="Exercise" or look at the keywords...

PS2: I changed the title on the base nore to reflect what it was about.

    Thanks for the encouragement, Beverly.

Actually, got on the scale Saturday morning and it once again was back
to what it was last Sunday so Friday must have been a fluke.

Am sticking to the walking (mostly cuz it makes me feel so great) but
do have 2 other questions now that I have re-read the "exercise" notes.

On "pre-walk warmup" - can anybody give me an idea of a good stretching
    exercise before walking??

On shoes - I live in NH and work in PKO, can anybody tell me what type
of walking shoe to get, where to get it and approximate cost??

    Thanks in advance,

    Nancy

I don't know how far that is, but I'll relate my story on walking
    shoes.

I bought a pair of Reebok Training walkers. I didn't like the
Rockports. After walking for four weeks building from 2 miles to 6
miles a day the sole had worn out and I had developed a blister on the
outside of my big toe from the seam on the top of the shoe.

I ended up going to the Athletes Foot where I was told the amount of
walking I was doing I should be in a jogger. When I tried them on, I
was sold. There was more of a spring in my step and there was
absolutely no breaking in. I have since rung Reebok and they have
replaced my walkers with a jogger, so now I have two.

The most important thing is consider how much walking you'll be doing
and ask the experts, but try both a jogger and a walker on. Something
else I wear are Thorpad socks. They keep my feet totally dry of
perspiration and the padding adds more comfort, and are worth every
    cent they cost.

    Good luck

You can't gain or lose 5 pounds of muscle or fat in 1 week.

What you saw was a mistake, either food or water in your body,
a faulty scale, or heavy clothes.

    Nancy,

Take your measurements if you fluctuate so much. I do from day to day,
and only weigh once a week, but boy do the measurements change.

Thanks for the info, Dale and Mike.

Will check into shoes - measurements sound like a good idea, too.

Nancy, remember to take time of month into account - I can gain
2-5 lbs of water weight for about 3 days every 30 days or so....
