526.0. "HMR Fasting - question/progress note" by ASABET::M_KELLEY () Tue Oct 31 1989 19:13

I have completed my first week on the HMR Fasting program.
I lost 15 pounds this first week and am very happy with that.
One question I had planned to asked at the meeting, but
forgot is: Does it get easier as you get used to being on the fast?
I realize this could be vary among different people, but maybe
people could tell me about their experiences.

I am not hungry very often, but I do find that I miss
crunchy things like popcorn or potato chips.

I will post my progress in this note too.

    Thanks,

    Mary

Mary, I also completed my first week of HMR. Are you at Emerson? 4:30 class?

I have a friend that lost 97 lbs through HMR. I am not sure it got easier, but
she found very creative things to do with the supplement that made it less
boring.

I managed to attend a business meeting last night that included 'Italian dinner'
What a test! But I just made my little drink up and managed to fill myself
on conversation and not pasta and pastry!

Like you, I am not really hungry but boy, do I want to eat! The taste is really
what I am missing!

Let's keep those progress reports going!

I went for my second weigh in at HMR today and lost another 5 1/2
pounds making my total 20 1/2. I had a better week this week, I do
think you get used to the program, but I don't think it will ever get
    "easy."

Marsha, I do attend the program at Emerson Hospital, but it is the
    Tuesday class at 12:00.

Today they discussed excercise and how to figure out how much fat you
are burning by walking, biking, etc. I found it very interesting and
motivating too. I have had to add some boullion to my diet because I
need to hold onto more liquid than I have been, so I am ready for a
smaller weight loss next week, but that is fine, things are going along
    well for me so far.

I lost 50 pounds on the HMR program - I went to the program at
Leonard Morse Hospital in Natick. The fasting does get easier
with time. There are hurdles that have to be jumped though -
socializing is not always easy - after awhile you get sick of
explaining the program to other people. And when you get down
near your goal weight, people (friends and co-workers and family
included) will tell you that you are too thin, that you are
looking gaunt, etc. Basically you just have to ignore them.
That's what I did. Exercise is a real key - I know it's
emphasized alot in the program, but without increasing your daily
activity your weightloss will be slower and when you come off the
fast it will be hard to maintain your weight without the exercise.
Support is necessary in this program - I don't know if I would
have lasted without the support of my family and friends. If I
can give you one piece of advice - do NOT eat anything while
you are fasting. I stuck to the program entirely - and I saw a
lot of people drop out or have a real hard time once they had
taken "just one bite" of something. One bite often leads into
one more bite and so on. The holidays will be a definite
challenge. You can fast through them though. You already have
the motivation of the weightloss behind you. Keep the phone
number of your behaviorist near you.

I know I am going on at length here, but I really am a supporter
of this diet - it WILL work for you. Maintenance is another
story, but that is not the topic here. If you have any
questions, please do not hesitate to contact me either through
these notes or through Email - ROYALT::KELLYM.

Keep up the weightloss!!

    Hi,

Thanks for the supportive message. Unfortuntely I became very sick on
the HMR program. I missed a week of work and am still having blood
tests and doctor visits through my regular physician.

I am very disapointed with the HMR program. I tried to tell their doctor
that what I had was not a normal stomach virus but he just didn't
listen to me. I was getting worse and worse so I called my regular
physician who gave me a prescription for my stomach and had some tests
done. Without getting into all the details, my doctor does believes I
was allergic to the supplement. (He did support my going on the program
in the beginning so he is not biased against the fast.

I will be joining Weight Watchers this week. I am not able to eat much
right now, but I want to be on the program while I am working my way up
to a regular diet. I learned some important things about food while I
was on the fast and I think it will help me with Weight Watchers.
