482.0. "Need encouragement, FAST!!!" by MSDOA::MCMULLIN () Mon Jul 17 1989 20:24

Last week I gained 2 lbs. This week I've probably gained 2 more.
I don't want to gain, but I just can't seem to get back to losing.
I am going to Weight Watchers and I had previously lost 10.75 lbs.
I need some encouragment, BAD. Our boss is taking us out to lunch
tomorrow and I need to make sure I don't go over board there. I've
already had two candy bars today (I only meant to get 1, but 2 fell
out of the machine and I decided "what the heck, might as well eat
them both since I got them").

    HELP!!!

Virginia, you've just taken the first step, you've recognized a "problem"
and sought help here. That's a great beginning!

If you know where you'll be going tomorrow for lunch, call ahead to find
out what type of menu they have (if you don't already know), determine
NOW what you'll eat, fill out your food diary NOW, and tomorrow do not
look at the menu, simply order what you've already planned. Also, in
your plan, decide on a non-food reward for yourself that you'll get
later in the day because you've gotten back on track and stuck with
your plan for lunch. I think it's important that you see your lunch
success as worthy of being rewarded. Sometimes making it thru just
one meal is very very difficult, particularly if you've been having
a rough time.

Let us know how it goes.

482.2<Take it one day at a time and hang in there!EMASS::SICALong and winding road...BUT..!Tue Jul 18 1989 16:4523
Virginia, hang in there. I know how hard it is to get back
on track. I too am having a rough time getting back on track.
Just take it one day at a time. By all means if you are being taken
out to lunch then definitely plan what you will eat and eat what
    you plan.
As far as the candy bars are concerned, (for me its Dorito's)
Ok, so you ate them. Big deal. Don't let it be an excuse to continue
eating. (I don't mean to be harsh)

Step back and try to identify the triggers that are causing
you to munch. For me, I am under a lot of stress usually, however
lately it is substantially amplified. Because I have identified
what is causing me to want to munch I can better deal with it, and
slowly I am overcomming the urge to munch.

We can all do this but we must take it one day at a time.
Take care. If you want to talk, send me some mail. I am always
    willing to listen.

Thanks you two. I did ok at lunch, but I did have about 1/2 a piece
of cheesecake. Tonight I weigh in and I've decided that this is
it, I AM going to get back on track. Sometimes it seems like I've
got to just decide, "OK, I"ve had enough of this pigging out and
I'm going to stop it." I don't know why the best tasting foods
have to be the most fattening ones. If vegetables tasted better,
the whole world would be thin!!

    Thanks,

You can always give one away or throw it away when that happens.

482.5You never "might as well eat something" !!!!CAPNET::BARKERWed Jul 19 1989 15:288
I agree with mike! Yesterday I got an urge at the candy machine and
bought a pachage of Chuckles (jelly candy) When I got back to my desk
I had reasoned myself out of wanted it and gave it to someone who wits
near me. Afterwards, I felt much better about myself than I would've
felt if I had eaten them. 8^D (big smile for will power!)

p.s. There is a typo in line 3 of previous note...

            "wits" should read "sits"

It's easy to say "just give away the second bar", but sometimes
the easiest to say is the hardest to do. It's important not to
	be too harsh on yourself, and be realistic -- NO ONE is perfect;
even the paragons of virtue who always eat "properly" (whatever
that means) do things wrong, if not in relation to food, then
	with other things.

It sounds like you kept a reasonable degree of control at that
luncheon -- half a slice of cheesecake isn't going to put 5 lbs
back on (that bit of perspective is one of the things I have
to work at!), and you probably would have felt deprived and
resentful if you had avoided it completely.

	Good luck!
	Beverly

For me, doing that is very easy.

Out of sight, out of mind works for me.

482.9money in... money out CAPNET::BARKERWed Jul 19 1989 20:0213
Yeah Mike, someone who agrees with me!

Another way I exercise my will power when I get an urge at a candy
    machine is ...

I will put the money in, look at the selections long and hard, think
about the calories and fat content of each item.. then press the coin
return lever, put my money in my pocket and go back to my desk !

As Mike would say.. works for me!!

482.10Easiest if you don't take bite #1...SUPER::HENDRICKSThe only way out is throughWed Jul 19 1989 20:1114
I could never put the second candy bar down and walk away...or the
    third, or the fourth, or...

For me, the key is not taking one bite of something with sugar in
it. If I don't start, I don't have to find out how to stop. And
I don't know how to stop.

For me, abstinence from sugar is much, much easier than trying to
limit sugar because sugar acts like a drug for me.

    Take care, and good luck.

what works best for me is just staying away from that candy machine.

I know what I should have done with the candy bars. First of all
I should have never even gone after one, but I did. Then, when
two of them fell out, I should have taken one to the receptionist
and asked her to return it to the vendor, but I didn't. Believe
me, I know all kinds of things that I should have done, but I wrote
this note AFTER I had already ate BOTH of the candy bars and was
already hating myself for it, not before I opened them and started
munching. I am happy to report that I'm back on track for two days
in a row now and am definately planning on sticking with it.

482.13future looks good, forget pastWORDS::BADGEROne Happy camper ;-)Thu Jul 20 1989 15:5814
Hi virgina, don't dewel on the past. forget it, its history.
look at all the good things you've done today. but caution, next
time you get an urge to go to that candy machine, call someone for
support, call me, one way that effectely can change a habit or urg
is to substitute a new habit. Example urg to go to the candy machine
can be subsituted with manditory up and down stairs 10 times. Your
body is smart. next time it thinks it wants a candy bar, it'll
remember what you did to it the last time! it'll take a few times
before it catches on, but it works.

    regards,
    ed

Thanks so much for the encouragement, Ed!! I'm trying to just take
it one day at a time now and not even think about that candy bar.
