394.0. "Get Together" by HAMSTR::JAFFE (The Big Blue Buster from CMG) Thu Jan 19 1989 11:59

    I met with an anonomous notes file reader yesterday as this individual
    is also on a liquid protein fast and not having gone public yet,
    needed face to face support between meetings. We had a great time
    sharing and supporting and have agreed to meet again next week.
    We both thought that there might be others in the Southern N.H.
    area that would like to join us. It is not necessart to be on Opti-fast
    or other similar programs as our needs and experiences are all very
    similar. We plan to meet next Wednesday at MKO2. If anyone cares
    to join us, give a call to me (Joel) at DTN 264-2367 or mail at
    GERBIL::JAFFE.

    Hope to see you there - could be the start of the SNH Pound Sheders.

    PS - Ive got a blender for you shakers and plenty of low sodium
    chicken and beef bullion for desert.

    The responses are comming in. Looks like there is interest in a
    local internal support group. There is no reason why we can't include
    Marlboro and vicinity in the group and meet somewhere in the middle
    like LKO. Keep your cards and letters comming.

    Does anyone work in Littleton (probably the center of the NH - Mass
    facility) that could get a room reserved for Wednesday the 25th or
    1st for an 11:30 to 1:00 meeting? We ned someone to take the initiative
    or assign me to do it here in MKO. I am also open to meeting afer
    work hours at preferably somthing other than a restaurant. A local
    health club would be great or one of the DEC life centers. Come
    on Ann, you sound like a great organizer.

    I work in the Taylor Street Facility (right off Route 2 in Littleton,
    MA) - I can get a conference room here or at LKG if that is what
    is agreed upon.

    BTW, Joel, I met June and Jared last night at Hampshire Hills.
    My family and I are there every Monday night playing volleyball
    and/or swimming.

    I work in the LKG facility - what day and time do you want a conference
    room? How many people? Meeting space is getting tight - even at
    lunchtime so it pays to plan ahead. Let me know and I'll schedule
    for you.

    How about Wed. Feb. 1 for the first meeting. Say about 11:30 to
    1:00 and arrange for a room to accomodate 10-15. That should be
    plenty of room even for a big bunch like us.

    We could work on a registration list through VAXMAIL to your account
    on CONNI::SANDSTROM. Thsi would probably provide a more accurate
    count. Just let me know, I already have the date inked in my book.

    Hope to see everyone there. and Kristy, I'll make sure I stop you
    now that I know who you are. I am usually at the club at least once
    a day for an hour or two, usually in the exercise room.

    Joel
    P.S. I't almost time for the Friday update but due to a planned
    field visit, I'll make the entry on Monday. Just didn't want anyone
    to get scared thinking I pooped out. In fact, the scale shows a
    4 pound loss already.

    Fine. I just sent the room request out so I'll let you all know
    as soon as I find out which room we'll be in! There is a good size
    cafeteria here for those who don't bring their lunch, and there
    are microwaves in several locations for those who need to heat up
    something.

    Conni,

    Whats the total of Pound Shedders comming at this point? Maybe
    someone has ideas as to a topic for discussion or how we should
    organize. Or is the consensus to keep it loose and informal?

    I think a chosen moderator (which could change every meeting) could
    chose a topic of interest and act as chairman of the meeting. This
    might add some order, purpose and meaning to the get together and
    still have it be an enjoyable time.

394.20...some structureSALEM::LYLESI have some powdered water...Tue Jan 31 1989 17:2912
    I think a moderator for each meeting is a good idea. An idea for
    the first meeting might be to do a round robin of intros that in-
    clude weight profiles and plans, then developing a hit list of
    topics people would like to discuss. Maybe two or three people
    could take moderator responsibility for each meeting, developing
    material to present or guide discussion on a particular topic.

    Frankly, just time to share ways, means and fears would eat up the
    time!

394.21Minutes of the first meetingGERBIL::JAFFEThe Big Blue Buster from CMGWed Feb 01 1989 16:5920
    We did indeed have the first meeting of the Pound Shedders today.
    Thats the good news. The bad news is that only 3 of us were there.
    What happened to the rest?

    We had our guest speaker - the weightloss notesfile reknown Joe Coyle, give
    us his deep dark secrets on how to lose 200 pounds without really
    trying. Then we had group discussion on individual tricks, trials
    and tribulations.

    All in all, I found it to be a rewarding experience, and one that
    I will attend again if the interest is still out there. Are there
    any suggestions for how we can plan a next time with a higher
    attendance? Perhaps if we hold it in the evening or at someones
    house etc. I pledge to give my support.

    Oh well better luck next time - and to Inez and Joe - Thanks for
    comming. I really had a great time.

    Joel

394.22BOEHM::C_SANDSTROMThu Feb 02 1989 12:1830
	Well I'm glad to see that the Pound Shedders meeting
	worked however low the attendance. I was really planning
	to go, what I wasn't planning on was being out that day!

	How about we try it again in a couple of weeks. I'll schedule
    	a conference room for Wednesday, February 22 (and promise to
    	be there!) and post it as soon as I know.

        Maybe if we planned a little more in advance we could draw
	more people - this one was kind of on the spur of the moment.
	Also a list of topics to discuss might entice a few more to
	join us. I, for one, have been stuck at a 21 pound loss and
	would like to talk about breaking through that plateau. Not
	that I think the group should be very structured, but a focus
	point could be helpful.

	Some ideas: plateaus; how to stay motivated; exercise; do
	your family/friends/co-workers help or hinder; dealing with
	challenges; emotions; magazines/publications; meal planning
	for different needs; etc.

	Hey, maybe at the next meeting we can plan a lo-cal potluck
    	dinner for ourselves and spouses/so's! I'd volunteer my house,
    	it's near LKG. March is a long boring month (no Hallmark days
        to tout) so it would be a perfect time!

	Conni
	(still me, just a different account)

394.23Can we try weekly meetings?SALEM::LYLESI have some powdered water...Thu Feb 02 1989 13:1016
    When Joel and I first conceived the idea of a SNH support group
    we were thinking of a weekly meeting. I would like to see the
    weekly concept worked before abandoning it for the occasional
    get together. If there is interest in a weekly meeting, please
    respond to this note. Also indicate whether LKG is a good location
    or not.

    Conni, I have marked the 22nd on my calendar, but hope that there
    is interest in meeting the next two weeks also.

    I enjoyed our meeting yesterday, but didn't even start to fathom
    even one subject! There is so much to talk about and we're the
    people who have a lot of expertise!

    Inez

394.24GERBIL::JAFFEThe Big Blue Buster from CMGThu Feb 02 1989 13:275
    I'll think of you on the 22nd while sunning myself in sunny Ft.
    Lauderdale. Keep it going, I think it will help me a lot and hopefully
    help others as well. It is also a lot of fun meeting everyone face
    to face.

394.25Too Spread Out? (like my rear..)BAGELS::SKINNERRobin, LKG2-A/AA1, 226-5076Sat Feb 04 1989 06:008
    I haven't been in this file for weeks so I didn't find out about
    the meeting until yesterday, but I'm definitely interested. And
    even though LKG is PERFECT for me, it might be a little far for
    many from NH or Marlboro to attend regularly.

    Would one group in Nashua and another in Marlboro/Maynard be any
    easier for more people?

394.26Maybe, but...SALEM::LYLESI have some powdered water...Sun Feb 05 1989 03:299
    It might be a good idea for some we haven't heard from, Robin, but
    Joel is from Merrimack and I'm from the Salem, NH facility and we
    both think LKG is okay (it takes me the same amount of time to travel
    to MKO as to LKG). Maybe what we really have is a lack of need
    or interest.

    Inez

394.27I doubt I'm alone in thisATSE::KASPERHeisenberg may have been hereMon Feb 06 1989 16:589
    I also work in Merrimack. I can see going to LKG for an occasional
    get-together, but for weekly lunchtime meetings, I can't really see going
    any farther than ZKO. I'd be willing to go a bit farther for evening
    meetings, since I could stay a bit longer.

394.28Lack of TRavel Time, Not InterestSMURF::VERGEMon Feb 06 1989 17:369
    I had planned on going, but a family emergency prevented that. I also
    could not travel to Littleton on a weekly basis for a meeting; it would
    take up too much time. I would try to go to MK, or of course anything
    in ZK, and would attend providing I wasn't on the road to another
    meeting or what have you. I don't believe there is a lack of interest,
    just a lack of available travel time.

394.30BOEHM::C_SANDSTROMWed Feb 08 1989 16:1717
	The conference room is scheduled: Wednesday, February 22,
	11:30-1:00, New Haven conference room, LKG2.

	It looks as though there are different levels of expectations
	here. I don't think the low attendance is lack of interest,
	just lack of time. I'm planning to attend the meeting on the
	22nd, and am willing to schedule/plan others. However, I *know*
	I wouldn't be able to work yet another weekly meeting into my
	schedule, even if it's during lunch. An occasional get together
	during the day (monthly?) and once in a while at night is more
	what I thought this was going to be. I think if we got together
	once a month we could easily vary the location so everybody gets
	a chance to get out - LKG/MRO/ZKO/MKO, but a weekly basis might
	be an overload to schedule (just my opinion).

	Conni

394.31HAMSTR::JAFFEThe Big Blue Buster from CMGThu Feb 09 1989 12:5313
    I agree with Conni's plan in .30. Once a month during lunch on a
    Weds. and rotated between the 4 sites mentioned. I can't make the
    Feb. 22nd meeting due to vacation but I will take the responsibility
    for the March 22nd meeting here in MKO2 at lunch. That will be 2
    days after the beginning of spring yet 2 days before the Good Friday
    spring break.

    I'll post times, meeting room location and directions to MKO in
    the beginning of March.
